UNIT STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STERLING H. BUNNELL, OF LORAI N, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE BROWVN- COOHRAN COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF DELAWVARE.
DUPLEX-PUMPlNG-ENGINE FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,458, dated October 4, 1904.
Application filed October 29, 1903.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, STERLING H. BUNNELL, of Lorain, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplex-Pumping-Engine Frames, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention is particularly applicable to large engines of the horizontal type comprising duplicate sets of cylinders, pistons, connecting-rods, &c., operatively connected with a common crank-shaft. It is the usual practice to provide such engines with separate bedplates respectively local to each of said sets of mechanisms and to rely upon their inclependent connection with a common foundation to maintain them in alinement. It is not only difficult and expensive to assemble such engines with their bed-plates in proper relation to each other, so as not to bind the crankshaft, 'but massive, and consequently costly, foundations are required to maintain them in such relation.
It is the object of my present invention to dispense with the aforesaid expensive foundations and minimize the cost of setting engines of the class contemplated by providing bedframcs which may be machined and transported with the same facility as the ordinary frames aforesaid, but whose parts may be readily assembled in proper relative position without regard to the foundation upon which they are to be located and be permanently maintained in such relation independently of said foundation.
To this end my invention comprises primarily separate bed-plates for the respective duplicate sets of mechanisms and a frameplate extending beneath cylinders of the respective duplicate sets transversely across adjoining ends of said bed-plates and rigidly connected therewith.
My invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement herein set forth.
Figure I is a plan view of a bed-frame for a duplex direct-connected compressor conven- Fig. II is an elevation of the right-hand end of the frame as shown in Fig. I. Fig. III is a side Serial No. 178,960. (No model.)
elevation of said frame. Fig. IV is a plan View showing a modified form of my improve ments, wherein the cross-frame is in integral relation with the compression-cylinders.
In said figures, 1 and 2 are oppositely-counterpart bed-plates, whose edges 3 4 are machined and bolted together, as best shown in Fig. I. The cross frame -plate 5 is fitted against the rear surfaces of said bed-plates 1 and 2 and is rigidly secured thereto conveniently by the bolts 6 and 7 The steam motor cylinders 8 and 9 are mounted upon respective seats 10 and 11 on said cross-frame 5 in registry with the re-,
spective cross-head guides 13 and 14, which are conveniently formed in integral relation with the respective bed-plates 1 and 2. Said guides 13 14 extend to respective bearings 17 18 for the crank-shaft 19, which is common to both of the duplicate sets of mechanisms aforesaid. Said shaft is provided with the fiy-wheel 20, which rotates in the recesses 21 22 of said bed-plates.
The compression-pump cylinders 23 24 are arranged in alinement with the motor-cylinders 8 and 9, so as to be directly connected therewith by suitable piston rods, and although I have indicated the cylinders 23 24 as bolted to the vertical end of said crossframe 5 in Figs. I and III it is obvious that they may be mounted upon horizontal extensions thereof or may be formed integrally with the cross-frame 5, as indicated in Fig. IV.
Although the crossframe 5 is shown in the several figures as located wholly at the end of the bed-plates 1 and 2, it is to be understood that it may be provided with an extension between said bed-plates serving to separate them a definite predetermined distance, in which case the edges 3 and 4 would not be in contact, as indicated in Figs. I and II.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth,
as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention.
I claim- 1. In a bed-frame for a duplex engine, the combination with two bed-plates arranged side by side; of a frame-plate lying transversely I00 across adjoining ends of said bed-plates; and, means connecting said bed-plates in rigid relation with said frame-plate, substantially as set forth.
2. In a bed-frame for a duplex engine, the combination with a bed-plate for each duplicate set of mechanisms, arranged longitudinally side by side; a transverse frame-plate attached to said bed-plates across adjoining ends thereof, constructed and arranged to bind said bed-plates together; and, cylinders attached to said frame-plate, substantially as set forth.
3. In a duplex compressor, the combination with duplicate motor-cylinders, compressioncylinders, cross-head guides, and crank-shaft bearings; of a bed-casting for each duplicate set of mechanisms, arranged longitudinally side by side, the adjacent sides of said castings being recessed near one end thereof, and forming a space for a fly-Wheel; a frame-plate lying transversely across adjoining ends of said bed-plates, arranged to support said motor-cylinders; and, means connecting said bedplates and frame-plate in rigid relation, substantially as set forth.
4. In a duplex compressor, the combination with duplicate motor-cylinders, compressioncylinders, cross-head guides and crank-shaft bearings; of a bed-casting for each duplicate set of mechanisms arranged longitudinally side by side with their adjacent sides in contact; a frame-plate lying transversely across adjoining ends of said bed-plates in integral relation with said compression-cylinders, and provided with seats for the motor-cylinders; and, means connecting said bed-plates and frame-plate in rigid relation, substantially as set forth.
5. In a duplex horizontal compressor, the combination with two bed-plates arranged with their adjacent sides in contact; of a frameplate casting comprising two compressioncylinders and seats for the motor-cylinders, lying transversely across the adjoining ends of said plates and bolted thereto, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofl have hereunto signed my name, at Lorain, in the State of Ohio, this 26th day of October, 1903.
