PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD DENEGRE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO MOCORD & COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CAR-AXLE BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,681, dated September 20, 1904.
Application filed July 12, 1902. Serial No. 115,277. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD DENEGRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Car-Axle Boxes, (Case No. 3,) of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had. to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to car-axle boxes, and has for its object the provision of an improved dust-guard therefor and also of improved means for holding the dust-guard in place.
Generally speaking, my invention relates to that form of dust-guards known as outside dust-guards*that is,-such that may be readily applied to axle-boxes, which boxes need not be structurally modified upon their interiors in order to permit of the application of the dust-guards.
Generally speaking, my invention comprises in one of its embodiments a dust-guard of this character formed in separable sections, whereby it may be readily placed about the car-axle and caused to close the opening in the car-axle box into which the car-axle projects. In practicing this feature of my invention I preferably form the dust-guard in two equal sections that meet on a line coincident with a diameter of the axle, so that each half may be readily removed from a space about the axle, and in order to prevent any displacement between the sections when assembled they are provided with interlocking means serving to maintain the same together, which interlocking means are preferably in the form of ears and lugs engaging recessed ears, one lug, with its engaging ear, being preferably diametrically opposite the other lug with its engaging ear, the two ears being desirably provided upon one section of the dustguard, while the two lugs are desirably provided upon a companion section. The interlocking lugs and ears are carried upon extensions of the dust-guard sections, which extensions are held in place by means of stripmetal springs that pass through lugs carried by the car-axle box and secure the said extensions close to the car-axle box to form a close fit therewith. The bore of the composite dust-guard is faced with some suitable material having direct contact with the car-axle, serving to permit the car-axle to rotate within the bore of the dust-guard without material friction, while at the same time preventing the admission of dust through the bore of the dust-guard.
I preferably employ as a packing for the dust-guards annular strips of suitable material affording little friction and constituting a sufficient barrier to dust, which strips are preferably of leather. In order that these strips may be properly centered with respect to the bore of the dust-guard and axle, I provide an annular rim which is concentric with the axle and the hole in the dust-guard, which annular rim surrounds the outer peripheries of the protecting-strips, while at the same time serving to properly center the same. In order to prevent the packing-strips from buckling, rigid keeper-plates are mounted upon the outside thereof, rivets passing through the keeperplates and the strips of packing material into the dust-guard body or plate, these keeperplates being substantially rigid, serving to confine the packing-strips to their normal planes between the rivets.
A dust-guard body or plate is made in sections. A plurality of annular strips of leather is preferably employed, which strips are so laid as to break joints, by which construction not only may the plates of the dust-guard be separated, but the packing-rings as well, the keeper-plate permitting this separation, as in such instance it is also made in sections, permitting separation between the dustguard plate-sections.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car-axle box having associated therewith the device of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view] of a preferred form of dust-guard constructed 3 in accordance with the invention. Fig. 3 is an end view of the construction shown in Fig. 1 looking toward the dust-guard. Fig. 4E isa sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 3; the caraxle being shown in place, while one of the sections of the dust-guard is completely're moved. Fig 5 is a sectional view looking in the direction of the arrows 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6 f Fig. 2. Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The car-axle box to which the device of my invention may be applied may be of any suitable character, that illustrated being a wellknown type. This car-axle box is desirably provided with a marginal lug 60, extending across its top and rear. The rear wall of the car-axle box is provided with a bore through which the car-axle 5 passes, this car-axle having interposed between the same and the top wall of the box a suitable bearing construction 0, as is well understood by those skilled in the art. The dust-guard has two platesections d cl, each provided at its upper end with a book 6, that is engaged with the marginal lug a, as illustrated, the purpose of which lug and hooks will be more fully hereinafter set forth. The rear wall of the caraxle box is provided with lugs f f at its top and bottom portions, through which horizontallydisposed strip-metal springs g g are passed. whereby the sectional dust-guard plate is held against the rear wall of the car-axle box. In order that the dust-guard plate may be formed in separable sections, which at the same time when assembled may be retained in their proper relative positions, these sections are provided with some interlocking agencyas, for example, the lugs lb lb, carried upon one plate, engaging correspondingly-recessed ears 2' 2', mounted upon the other plate. The lugs h h by passing through the recesses in the ears '2; 2' prevent relative vertical displacement between the sections of the dust-guard plate and also relative lateral displacement, the sections of the dust-guard plate forming practically a single dust-guard plate when assembled in the manner set forth. In the event of breakage of the upper spring g or of a buckling tendency between the plate-sections or any cause tending to effect an undue displacement of the dust-guard plate the hooks e a come into service to act as a preventive against these undesirable consequences. The dust-guard plate is provided with a packing 7;, that projects within the aperture or bore through the plate and snugly surrounds the car-axle, and in order that the packing may be readily placed in position and may be always accessible for purposes of repair and re placement I mount the same directly upon the rear face of the dust-guard plate, and in order that the packing may always be centered properly there is employed an annular rim Z, projecting rearwardly from the plate and concentrically disposed with respect to the axle and with respect to the center of the bore through the dust-guard plate.
The packing 7a is preferably made up of an nular strips of leather, which may be formed in sections and which may be riveted to the dust-guard plate at Z Z. In order to prevent the strips from buckling between the rivets, there is preferably employed a keeper-plate m, preferably made sufficiently rigid to properly retain the packing-strips. In the embodiment of the invention shown the dustguard plate being formed in separable sections the packing-strips and the keeper-plates are also preferably formed in separable sections.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A dust-guard for car-axle boxes, coniprising a plurality of separable sections, and interlocking deviceson said sections for temporarily locking the sections together, the different parts of said interlocking devices being fixed to said two separable sections, substantially as described.
2. A dust-guard for car-axle boxes, comprising a plurality of separable sections, and interlocking devices on said sections for temporarily locking the same together, the cooperating parts of said interlocking devices being on the faces of said two separable sections.
3. A dust-guard for car-axle boxes, comprising a plurality of separable sections, and interlocking devices on adjacent edges of said sections for locking the same together, substantially as described.
4. A dust-guard for car-axle boxes, comprising a pair of separable sections separable along a line axial of the axle, and interlocking devices on opposite sides of the axle and on the adjacent edges of the separable sections, said interlocking devices being adapted to engage one another to hold the sections of the guard temporarily against separation, substantially as described.
