SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,425, dated September 20, 1904.

Be it known that I, SIDNEY U. FERGUSON, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Perry, in the county of N oble. Oklahoma Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Lamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hydrocarbon-lamps.
The object of the invention is to improve the construction and arrangement of lamps of this character by providing' a double generator, thus increasing the generating capacity of the lamp.
A further object is to provide means for forcing the hydrocarbon to the generators and also to provide means for automatically cutting otf the supply of hydrocarbon oil in case of an accident to the lamp, thereby preventing the escape of said oil.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of the oil-supply and compressed-air tanks and a lamp connected thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal sectional view of the double generator and a portion of the oil-supply pipe, showing the automatic valve. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional view of the same.
Referring' more particularly to the drawing's, 1 denotes a hydrocarbon-oil-supply tank.
2 denotes a compressed-air tank, which may be supplied with air in any suitable manner and is connected with the upper end of the oil-tank by a pipe 3, in which is arranged a valve 4. The air-tank Q is provided with an air-gage 5 to indicate the pressure ofthe air contained in said tank.
An oil-feed pipe 6 is connected to the lower end of the oil-tank and at its opposite end is connected to the upper generator 7 of the lamp 8 by a three-way coupling 9, in the lower` branch ofV which is screwed a plug 10. On said plug is formed an eye or hook 12, by which said lamp is supported.
The generator 7 consists of a horizontallydisposed section of pipe 13, which is preferably formed of brass, and in said pipe is arranged lengths of copper wire 14, forming retarding elements between which the oil is forced. The outer end of the pipe 13 is bent downwardly and screwed into one branch of a three-way coupling 14, said coupling also Jforming a valve-seat, being interiorly threaded to receive a plug valve 15, the stem of which works through a stuffing-box 16, screwed on the outer end ot' the coupling. On the outer end of ythe stem is secured an operating wheel or handle 17.
Into the inner end of the coupling 14 is screwed the end of a tube 18, forming the second or lower generator, in the free end of which is formed a contracted discharge-opening 19, in which is adapted to work a needlevalve 20, formed on the end of a stem 21, which is secured to the inner end of the plugvalve 15. The stem 21 is preferably octagonal in shape and is disposed within the generator-tube 18.
When the valve 15 is screwed into the coupling 14 past the inlet-opening which adords communication between the upper and lower generator, said opening will be closed, thereby cutting off the supply of gas. The closing of the valve 15 also forces the needle-valve Q0 into .its seat, formed by the contracted discharge-opening' 19, which will form a closure for the lower generator. The insertion of the needle-valve into this opening also cleans the same each time the valve is closed and opened, thereby keeping the outlet open and clean for the free discharge of the gas formed in the generators.
On the discharge end of the lower generator is secured ashield 22 in the form of a bell or cup, which projects over the open end of a short section of enlarged pipe 23, which forms the commingling chamber or tube, in which the combustible gas is commingled or mixed with air and from which the same is conducted to the lamp by a conductor tube or pipe 24,
which may be arranged in any suitable shape to support the lamp beneath the generatortubes. Said tube is shown in the drawings as consisting of a vertically-disposed section, to the lower end of which is connected a rightangularly-disposed section having on its outer end an 'upwardly-projecting nipple 25, on the threaded end of which is screwed the burner of a lamp 26. The lamp 26 may be of any desirable construction, but is preferably of the incandescent variety, as shown.
At a suitable point in the oil-feed pipe 6, preferably just above the upper generator, is arranged an automatically-operating valve 27, whereby should the lamp become broken or a leak occur below said valve the supply of oil will be immediately cut olf. The valve 27 comprises an enlarged tube 28, arranged in the oil-feed pipe, as hereinbefore described.
The upper end of the lower section of feedpipe, onto which the tube 28 is screwed, projects into the tube 28 and forms a seat 29 for a ball-valve 30, which is normally held above said seat by a light coil-spring 31, and the back pressure of the oil or gas caused by the retarding elements in the generator and also the contracted discharge-opening 19 of the lower generator. Should a leak occur anywhere below the valve from any cause, which would release this back pressure, the pressure of the oil above the valve 30 would immediately force the ball down onto its seat against the tension of the spring 3l, thereby closing the valve and stopping the flow of oil.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a hydrocarbon-lamp, the combination with an oil-supply tank, of a feed-pipe connected thereto, means for forcing the oil from said tank and through said pipe,` an-upper generator-tube, connected to said supply-pipe, a lower generator-tube connected to said upper generator, a valve adapted to regulate the size of the opening between said generators, a contracted discharge-opening arranged in the opposite end of said lower generator-tube, a needle-valve actuated by said regulatingvalve, to cause the former to enter said contracted passage to clean the same, a commingling-chamber arranged to receive the gas discharged through said contracted opening, a conductor-pipe connected with said chamber, a lamp connected by said conductor-pipe and an automatically-operating safety-valve arranged in said oil-feed pipe, substantially as and for the purpose described.
