Description

L. B. FOX. METHOD OF FINISHING LEATHER.
Patented Apr. 21, 1868;

LAWRENCE B. FOX, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 77,025, dated April 21, 1868; antedated April 7, 1868.
IMPROVED METHOD OI FINISHING LEATHER.
fitte 5:11am: name in in thkjzttm haunt ant muting mm at the sums- TO ALL WHOM 11. MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE 13. Box, of the'city of Williamsport, county of Lycoming, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Method of Finishing Leather; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
\ The nature of my invention consists in providing a movable table upon which the hidccan be placed and managed by the operator during the finishing-process, and also the peculiar construction and combination of a proper plape-stoek, all used by theaid of steam or other power, saving much manual labo'r,'and making a better article at a reduced price, as will be readily seen by definite descriptionof my machine.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construe.
tion and operation.
I Upon a proper frame, as shown in Figure 1, I put a convenient track, H, on which the table-legs provided with slots to fit said track can move laterally, which legs are designated by A. Tire top of the tableB is round,
and provided with arms 6 b, which'arms or braces are fastened to a sleeve or thimble, c, by means of which thimbles c c", the table can be easily rotated on the shaft 0. I Beneath t. e thimble c' I attach two rings, dd, to which.
I fasten the cord 0, and pass the same over the pulleys ff, Figure 2, te which pulleys is fixed a crank, g, which is operated by hand, but which can as well be operated by the steam orother power by means of a loose pulley.
iz'is an ordinary framework to support the necessary machinery use, and to which,.at its upper part/is fixed the band-wheel J, from which I take the driving-power; To this wheel I fasten the wrist K and shaft L, which shaft, by means of another wrist M, is attached to the plane-stock N, which stock is provided with a groove, R, which runs in the frame 1:. In the plane-stock N are put two sleeks O O, as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3,
and 4, and held by means of set-screws pp. To one end of the plane-stock I fasten suitable ears, 1, 2, 3, 4, shown'in fig. 4, by which means the standard ,5 and the band and bevel-gear wheel 6 are secured. The Levelgear is the same as that in ordinary use for similar purposes, and therefore does not need further description.
On the lower part of the standard 5, I-place a circular knife, 7, and on the bevel-wheel 6, I have'an indentation, shown at 8, in which a cord is retained, and the cord 9. An endless belt passeh over a similar drum attached to the wrist K, and marked K. To the frame n is fastened the standard 1 which runs in the slides a, and adjusted by the set-scrcihT, by means of which the plane-stock can be at once raised or lowered, as demanded, while the machine is in mot-ion."
It will be seen that the plane-stock canbe removed with ease, and a rubber of stone, wood, or iron, usedin its place for the purpose of polishing the surface, if required. It will be also seen that the leather placed upon the table B, can, by means of the rotary-and lateral metion ibc brought at all points in contact with the cuttingsurfaces of the slceks O O, and the circular knife 7, saving a large amount of manual labor, andht the same time making a perfect because uniform finish, from the fact that the said cutting-surfaces maintain an unchanged position, the pressure being constantly the same. v
Having thus described my invention, what I .claim, and desire to procure by Letters Patent, is- 1. Theplane-stock for finishing leather, with its two sleeks and circular knife, as described and shown. 2. In combination with the plane-stock, as described, I claim the adjustable table, constructcdand operated as shown, and for the purposes set forth. I
- 3. I claim the combination and arrangement of the several parts composing my finisher when nsed for the purposes already stated L. B. FOX. Witnesses:
Jomv Buns, WM. 0. Donna.
