TO ALL .WHOM IT MAYCONOERN Be itlznoivn that I, ALEXANDER Josnrn DEnU, of Hesy, in the Kingdom of Belgium, have .invented cer-V .tain nevv and useful Improvements -in Machinery for Preparing WooLCotton, and other material, for the process of cardingf; and Ido hereby declare 'that the following is a full and correct description thereof, reference being hadutouthe 'accompanying drawings, forming part 'of-this specification, andptothe letters of reference -marked thereon, the same letters referring to the same parts'in all the figures.l
lFigure 1 is 'aside' elevation of the machine, with some parts of the casing removed to showV the cylinders.
Figure 2 is a View ofthe other side ofthe machine. A
Figure 3 is a top-view, with the oiling-apparatus left oi?, and part of the top casing removed topshow the cylinder. i v
The main .objects of my improvements are to produce a more regular mode of feeding, machinery for working textile 'and fibrous material, and. also to accomplish a more 'thorough and' uniform oiling of the material, when required, than is attained in the usual way, substituting mechanism in the place of hand-workfor that purpose.
l The construction and operation are" as follows: A is a box or chamber to hold the Wool or other material to be worked, having at its lower end the cylinder B, and also, on one side, an`endless lapron, C, passing down nearly to the bottom of the box, the object o f which is to insurethe passage downward of the material in the box tothe cylinder B.A A movable partition, x, is placed across the-box'to increase o r diminish the capacity of the space occupied by the inateriz'tl. This partition may be kept in plate by pins iu-the holes in the sides of the box, or by set-screws, or other convenient device, and regulates thequantity of the material taken by the cylinderB to feedy theV beater-cylinder, D,"which is placed-near enough to B to take the material 'from itas it revolves, and throw it upon the rolls a-,a a, (or endless .apron,) forming a sheet, which passes through the feed rolls, E,.to the second cylinder, Fpvrhich again opens it and throws it upon the endless' apron, Holes are made in the sides Yand top of the cases G and G', over the receiving-rolls or endless aprons, to facilitate the regular deposition of the material upon the aprons, by allowing the air to escape that is drawn in at the sides ofthe cases in which the cylinders revolve, by the centrifugal force exerted on the air in the cases by the arms of thelbeater.. This air, rushiuginto the cases over thelaprons,' passes out of the holes, lleaving the material brought in with it, deposited upon' the apronsingreat uniformity. The endless apron, H, delivers the sheet of material to the rollers L, S, R, that compressitv to a certain extent, and pass it along to be rolled up on the movable roller K, Awhich rests upon the two rollers M and N. A sheet of cloth, 1a.', or other suitable substance, is fedv in'over the roller Mto be wound up in the lap on K, to keep thedi'erent layers separate, and to prevent tbe drying up of the oil or 'moisture before the lap iscarded. Y I e The oiling-apparatus consistsofth'e case 0, in which are two cylinders, 1 and 2, having brushes on their arms. The larger cylinder, 1, is used to mix the oil"andrwater, and deliver over thefedge of the `pan, c,`nnder the smaller cylinder, 2, which takes itfup, and delivers over the eqdge of'4 the plate, Q,hfrom which it runs down and falls upon the Ivoolat t, through an opening in the case made for that purpose, just as it is passing to the beater-cylinder, D, whereby it gets thoroughly mixed by theA different cylinders by tbe time the lap is linished.
In working cotton, theoiling-apparatus may be dispensed.'with,.and the cylinders used with a blunt tooth, on account of injuring the staple if sharp ones are used. But for'wool, a sharper .tooth is necessary.
In working Wool, this system of preparation has n'ot only the advantage of saving hands and labor, but gives also a great regularity of feeding, which cannot be obtained by spreading out the wool in the usual way byhand upon an endless apron, vvhich leaves the uniformity to'depend upon theattention and skill of the person who tends the machine, and. is yalso affected by the variable Weight ofthe Wool when it has been oiled in the usual way of ive or six hundred poundsat a time, some days before Working. The oiling-arrarigement enables me to use oil and Water as one1 liquid, thus ditlusing or increasing thebulk of the ailing-mixture, and insuring a more thorough' oiling of thc'whole material. l u
lhatpart of the mscbine between the feed-rolls E and endless ynpru', inclusive, n'iey.r be attached .directly to a. cardng-mschine,.or te a. cotton-picker, or lapper, vor to a. Wool-burring machine, 'in which 4letter case the cylinder B would berldrivenl in'en opposite direction, and an opening made lin the case at t to allow the hard substances in the wool to be thrown out by the cylinder D) 4 l Thelgeeri'ng, ormode ofdrivng,l the'dierent pcrts of the machine, may bevnried nccording to convenience,
`but {vill briefly describe thc one used by me.
The mein driving-belt drives the cylinder F, and belt from n. pulley cn that shaft drives the cylinder D. Bothofthese rcvolvcfrvith greet rapidity. A belt, on n pulley on cylinder B, drives thnt'cylinde'r'by means of a. pulley en the feed-rolls E, which receive motion tiuough'cygearwheel on the other side from a. pulley, A:md n bolt from a. pulley l'on cylinder F. Tl1e` parts of the mzchine that wind up the lap', also the endless apron H, are driven by n. belt fromnpulleyonsthe end offced-roll E,y cnil 'the oilingmppamtus is driven by ubelt'on' n pulley, o1' acone-pulleyfmcy'rbe used, 'on one endof feed-roll'E.
To `regulate the thicknessof the laps for dicrent qualities of vWool, cotton, 82o., cchnnge of wheels of dii'- ferent sizes is runde 'tobe put on ,the end-of the feed-roll, E, that drives thevpartof 4the machine that winds up the laps, so thatpnrt of theymechine, together with the endless apron H, may be driven faster or slower. with regni-dto the feed-rolls E, thclnps drawnl lighter or heavier, es may be required. 'And a. regulatingmechanism is also necessary to lgeep `the materiel ou the endless apron H the sumel thickness, as some qualities 0f W0l,j&c, will collect faster than others, `und would llthe -case G, so es to prevent the escape ofthe'air, in which cese the speed of the e'pron Hond rolls should be increased. .A
Having thus described my improvements,`whnt I claim es my invention, and. desire to' secure by Letters- Patent, is-l l l.V I claim the combination of the cese or hopper A with endless apron C sindv adjustnble partition :c3-us and -for the purposel set forth. i
2. 4I claim the' combination of the two cylinders D endB, with the cnsennd endless apr-on- C, arranged substnntinllyas herein described, end for the purpose set forth.
3. VI claim the combination of the two brush-cylinders, 1 and 2, tho two reservoirs O und c, :ind plate Q, substantially es described, :ind for the 'purpose set forth.
.4. I claim thc combination of the @lling-apparatus, constructed las described, with the cylinders D and B,
substantially as speciedi. l v
f5". l claim, in combination, thewool-delyering or feeding-mechanism, the 'ailing-mechanism, the pressing und the but or lop-forming mechanism, substantially as described, und `for the-purpose set forth.
