PATENT i JOSEPH Gr. LAMOTTE AND JOHN B. LAMOTTE, OF WORCESTER MASSACHUSETTS.
SIFTING ATTACHMENT FOR eRATEs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 769,950, dated September 13, 1904.
Application filed February 27, 190%. Serial No. 195,512. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OSEPH G. LAMOTTE and J OHN B. LAMOTTE, citizens of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Sifting Attachment for Grates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for use in connection with the grates of stoves or other fire-pots.
The especial object of this invention is to combine a rotary shaking or dumping mechanism of a grate with a reciprocating screen for sifting the ashes.
To these ends this invention consists of the sifting attachment forgrates and of the combinations of parts therewith, as hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of sufficient parts of a stove to illustrate the application of our invention thereto, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view showing the operative connections between the rotary shaking or dumping mechanism of a grate and a vibrating screen.
In connection with the grate of a stoveor other fire-pot of that type employing a rotary handle for shaking or dumping we have provided an inclined sifting-screen which will be vibrated back and forth to shift the ashes when ever the grate is operated.
Referring to the accompanying drawingsand in detail, the body portion of the stove, as herein illustrated, incloses an oven A and a fire-pot P, which may be lined with fire-brick in the ordinary way.
.- bearings to permit the screen to be vibrated or moved back and forth.
Fastened upon the operative shaft 11 of the grate-bars is a beveled gear 17, which meshes with a beveled pinion 18 on the upper end of a vertical shaft 19. The vertical shaft 19 is provided with a bent or cranked section confor its grate as thus constructed the ashes or other material which passes through the grate when the fire is shaken or dumped will fall upon the inclined screen 15, and the ashes which pass through the screen will fall into the ash tray or box 21, while the coal and coarser materials will be directed down the inclined surface of the screen and will fall into the coal tray or box 22. By means of this construction the ashes will be efficiently sifted and separated from the coal or other coarser materials.
We are aware that numerous changes may be made in applying our invention to different types of stoves by those who are skilled in the art and that different forms of grate-bars may be used in connection with our sifting attachment. We do not wish, therefore, to be lim-v ited to the special constructionv we have herein shown and described; but
What we do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination of a fire-grate comprising a plurality of grate-bars, each consisting of a pivoted shaft having extending arms, and a sifting-screen having a rectilinearly-recipro cating motion imparted thereto from the turning of the grate-bar shafts.
2. The combination of a fire-grate consisting of a plurality of pivoted shafts geared to turn together, each of said shafts having extending arms, means for turning the shafts,
an ash-receptacle below the sifting-screen, a receptacle for receiving the coal deflected by the inclined screen, a crank-shaft connected to move the screen and beveled gears connecting thecrank-shaft and grate-operating shaft.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
