Description

Patented September 13, 1904.
TINTTED STATES PATENT @FFIQE.
CLAUS WM. GLANDT, OF BENNINGTON, NEBRASKA.
HENS NEST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,797, dated p ember 13, 1904.
Application fi ed'July 18, 1903- Serial No. 166,164. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLAUs WILLIAM GLANDT, residing at Bennington, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Hens Nests; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and novel improvement in hens nests.
The object of my invention is to provide a hens nest so arranged that the same may be readily taken apart and cleaned, and, further, embodies an interchangeable feature, so that a fowl may be retained in the nest while setting, being so constructed that upon one side the fowls that are laying enter the nests, while as soon as a fowl desires to set the nest may be closed upon that side and opened upon the opposite,,so that fowls that are laying n'ever enter their nests upon the same side as the setting hens, and my invention embodies certain other combinations pointed out more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figure 1 a front view of a four-section nest embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a sectional view on line 02 w, while Fig. 3 shows a sectional view on line 2 .2 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the aim of my invention I use two similar end sections, (marked 1 1,) which are along one edge, provided with the vertical groove a and upon the opposite edge with a grooved strip 6, provided with the groove 0, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. These grooves a, by means of the stub-grooves 6, are continued outward, as disclosed in Fig. 2. These two end members 1 1 are secured by a top member 2 and a bottom member 3 to form a rectangular structure. Positioned between the side members 1, is a vertical member 4, which is also secured by means of the top member 2 and the bottom member 3. This vertical intermediate member 4 is provided with the vertical grooves 60' upon opposite sides in front and upon the rear with the grooved strip 0, provided with the grooves c. It should be understood that a plurality of these intermediate vertical members may be used, and so, also, may the sides 1 and the members 4 be provided with grooves, as shown at a, or have secured to them grooved strips, as shown at b and a. Each side member 1 and each intermediate vertical member t is in addition provided with a plurality of transverse grooves f, as shown in Fig. 1, these horizontal grooves being adapted to receive the nest-bottoms A, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, which readily slide into the grooves f. These bottoms are further provided with handholds 5, as shown in Fig. 8, so that they may be readily drawn out.
The slotted or grooved strips Zfdo not extend upward as far as the position of the bottom of the nest above, so that there is provided the space 7, as shown in Fig. 2, at the top, which enables the operator to remove the doors B, which are provided with the projecting ears 8, as shown in Fig. 1, which ears may be carried out of the grooves 0 and e and a a in that the strips 6, as well as the strips 0, end a suitable distance below the bottom above, while the grooves a and a are provided w ith the intake and exit grooves 6. The structure is further strengthened by means of the transverse rear members G, which also form a stop for the nest-bottoms A, as shown in Fig. 2.
The doors B are interchangeable, and may be carried from the rear to the front, and in Fig. 3 one of the doors B is shown in position upon one of the front lower door members D, two of these door members being shown in Fig. 1, they being provided with the handholds 10, as shown in Fig. 1. These front doors D are cut out above, as shown at 2, to providea ventilating-opening, as shown.
In order that the hens may readily get into the nests, I provide a jumping rack or stand, comprising the standards 13 13, secured by means of the transverse members 1 1 14, pivotally secured by means of the pins 0 and the bars 15 to the end members 1.
In Fig. 1 one of the upper nests is disclosed as being closed in front by means of the door D and the upper door B, While the adjacent nest is entirely open in front, disclosing the strengthening member C upon the rear and the rear door B in position. Below the nest is shown provided With the front door member D in position and the rear member B in position, While the adjacent nest has been deprived of the bottom and the front and rear doors.
As has been set forth, these nests are intended to be opened, so that the hens enter from one side, as the one closed by means of the removable door D. As soon, however, as a hen desires to set, the back door B is removed and placed in front Within the grooves a and a, so that the setting hens enter and leave the nest from the side opposite, preventing the setting hens being annoyed by the laying hens entering the nests. The doors D being loosely held Within the grooves maybe readily removed.
When this nest is to be cleaned, it is simply necessary to remove the front door D and remove the bottoms AWith the nest, so that the remaining structure may be scalded With hot Water, as are the bottoms and the doors,\vhen the nest Will be found freed of vermin.
These nests are made in suitable lengths and made, further,to contain any suitable number of superposed nests.
Having thus described my said invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
1. A rectangular frame comprising two end members in combination with a top and bottom member, of a plurality of transverse members forming the loWer portion of a number of nests, said end members being provided with vertical grooves upon the front and rear, doors slidably held upon the front and rear Within said grooves, said end members further being provided With horizontal grooves adapted to slidably hold a bottom, said bottom forming a support for the doors upon one side all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a nest, the combination of two end members, With a top andbottom member, said end members being provided With vertical grooves near opposite edges, of a plurality of horizontal grooves, a set of transverse rear members, securing said end members, a plurality of bottom members adapted to slide into said horizontal grooves, a set of doors adapted to slide into said vertical grooves, and a jumping-rack secured to said end members, all arranged substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
