REEL-CARRYING APPARATUS FOR WEB-PRINTING PRESSES OR OTHER MACHINES.

Be it known that I, Guoneu WILLIAM Mas- CORD, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at London, S. 1, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Reel-Carrying Apparatus for \Veb- Printing Presses or other Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reel-carrying apparatus for use in web-printing presses and other machines, and has for its object to provide an apparatus in which a new reel may be instantly placed in position after one is exhausted, so as to minimize to the utmost the time necessary for the stoppage of the machine on the introduction of a new reel.
The invention is of particularadvantage in rotary and other welrprinting presses where a number of printing-couples are employed and where a number of reels of web are used simultaneously. The invention, however, is also of advantage where only one couple or only one reel is used.
The invention consists in the provision of a rotatable carrier upon which two or more reels of web may be mounted, for example, in the same plane, so that when one reel is exhausted the rotatable carrier is rotated to bring the next reel in position to be connected to the end of the web in the machine, thereby avoiding the waste of time in lifting the exhausted reel and its spindle out of position and lifting a new one into its place while the press is standing. A number of sets or pairs of reels are mounted in position upon the rotatable carrier, as required, according to the number of webs passing through the press or the number of printing couples therein. Each set or pair of reels may be so mounted as to be capable of rotation or movement independent of the other pairs or sets comprised in the same apparatus or they may be carried by an integral carrier or support and may be capable of rotation or movement simultaneously.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a supporting-carrier for three sets of reels, the
supporting-carrier being shown in connection with a rotary web-press in which there are three printing-couples. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan taken on line :11 1c of Fig. 1.
In carrying the invention into effect in its application to a rotary web-printing press, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2,1 mount upon the floor in a position immediately in the rear of the press a rotatable base-plate a, which is conveniently provided on its under face with rollers 7), running upon a fixed rail-plate a, suitably fitted and secured in position. This rotatable base-plate a is centrally provided with a bevel pinion u in gear with a second bevel-pinion arranged upon a longitudinal shaft of, which derives motion through a worm and worm-wheel or other gear from any source of motive power, conveniently the same source as that by which the press is driven, the rotation of the shaft of being capable of being effected and regulated by any convenient and well-known means as may be required.
Upon the base-plate (a the lateral supports or carriers (Z (Z are bolted in a central position and at a distance apart corresponding to the width of the webs or reels, while the upper extremities of the lateral supports or carriers (Z are connected by means of a bridgepiece 7, which may be centrally provided with a pivot d, which lits within a ball-bearing provided upon a bracket or upon a girder, ceiling, or other support. The lateral supports or carriers (1 may be connected together at intervals by means of the brace-rods 1?. Each of the lateral supports or carriers (7 is provided with oppositely-projecting arms 0 for carrying the reel-spindles f, the respective spindles of each pair being on opposite sides provided with a brake device which, as illustrated, may consist of two arms g r each pivoted to a bracket or support carried by the arm (a and being furnished with brake-shoes and with a spindle having right and left hand threads at its respective extremities, by means of which on rotation the brake-levers /may be drawn together to apply pressure upon the brake wheel /1., fixedly screwed upon the reel-spindle. it will be understood that on the rotation of the spindle g by means of the hand-wheel provided'for the purpose the brake-shoes g are caused to apply pressure upon the brake-wheel it, so that any particular tension may be put upon the web as maybe necessary.
It will be understood that in operation the reels are mounted on the arms e upon one side of the supporting-carrier, and the webs are led over the respective tension-rollers 7c, thence passing through the machine, where they are printed, associated, and folded as may be required. Before the reels are exhausted a second set of reels (indicated in clotted lines in the figures) is arranged upon the other side of the supporting-carrier, so that when the first set is exhausted the press is stopped and the supporting-carrier may be rotated into a diametrically opposite position, and the respective webs from the new reels may thus be at once connected to the end of the web in the machine, and thereupon the press may be restarted.
Obviously, if found necessary, the lateral carriers cZ may be mounted, so as to be movable toward and away from the machine, so as to allow said carriers to be revolved.
It is obvious that the supportingcarrier or frame may be provided to carry sets of two, three, four, or any other number of reels, as may be required. It is, however, in general preferred to arrange the reels in pairs, as illustrated in the figures. Such an arrangement could be utilized for carrying, for example, two relatively narrow reels, one of which could be mounted in front and out of line with the other, the two passing into the machine as one web.
I claim v 1. A reel carrier comprising a rotatable base plate, supporting uprights mounted thereon and means on said uprights to support a pair or reels in the same horizontal plane, whereby by rotating the base-plate, one reel may replace another.
2. reel carrier comprising a rotatable baseplate, a pair of supportinguprights mounted thereon, a plurality of arms projecting from the opposite sides of each upright constructed and adapted to support the reels, whereby by rotating the base-plate full reels may be replaced by empty ones. 7
3. A reel-carrier comprising two uprights, arms on said uprights to support a pair of reels in the same horizontal plane, and means to revolve said uprights about an intermediate axis whereby one reel may be substituted for another.
L. A reel-carrier comprising a base-plate, a pair of uprights mounted thereon, a plurality of reel-supporting arms projecting from said uprights to support a plurality of pairs of reels in different horizontal planes, and means to rotate said base-plate.
