TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WOLF, of Young America, in the county of Mercer, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Corn-Ploughs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. I I I In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents the axle of the cultivator, which is made with a bow at its centre, being made similar to a crank-axle with the crank at the centre.
The axle is provided with wheels, B B, at each end. The crank or how of the axle'stands in a vertical position, and the under side of the tongue, F, lies upon its centre, and is secured to it by a suitable metallic loop. G G represent braces, which pass from the axle, near the wheels, up to the tongue. To the rear end of the tongue is secured a hooked bar, J, by means of which the ploughs or cultivators are held above the ground when it'is desired to move the implement from onc'place to another.
0 0 represent the plough-beams, which are twoin number. The forward ends of these beams are secured to the axle by-means of metallic loops, which. embrace the axle,'and then have their ends passed up through the beam. A thread is out upon the loops at their ends, and nuts aa pass over them, for securingthem firmly in place. These loops upon the ends of the beams allow said beams to be moved toward each other, or
separated, atpleasure, for ploughing closer to or further from the corn, or'whatever may he being cultivated. Each plough-beam is provided with two shanks, to the lower ends of which are ploughs or shovels, each being constructed very like the ordinary double-shovel plough.
The handles, E, of the ploughs, lean to one side, so that the operator can'walk in the furrow, to oneside of the row. The rear ends of the beams are not secured together, but are left free, to be operated to or from the corn by the ploughman.
I I represent clips, which are secured upon the axle near the wheels.- Draught-rods, H, are connected to these clips. A single swingle tree is used for each horse, the tongue being used more particularly for guiding the cultivator. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. Connecting the forward ends of the beams 0 C to the axle A, by means of metallic loops, so that said ends can be shifted, while the rear ends can be adjusted, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The arrangement ofthe axle Awith the beams O O, which are loose at their rear ends, and with the tongue F, as and for the purpose set forth.
' 3. The arrangement of the draught-bars H H with the axle A and tongue F, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 5th day of November, 1867.
