FRANK HUOT, OF BIGTIMBER, MONTANA.
SAW-SET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,385, dated September 6, 1904.
Application filed February 8, 1904. Serial No. 192,623. (No model.)
To a. wit/mt it 71mg concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK Huor, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bigtimber, in the county of Sweet Grass and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in saw-setting, and comprises various details of construction and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional longitudinal view through the device. Fig. 3 is a detail view in elevation of the clamping mechanism attached to a bench or board. Fig. L is a detail view. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the dieholding block having a hooked extension A, which is designed to engage one of the clamp members B and to be held in adjusted position thereon by means of a saw which frictionally engages the inner edge of a clamp member B, while the outer edge of the clamp member is held frictionally against the bottom of the recess in the projection A. One of said clamp members B has a shank portion B held between the vertical portions of the L-shaped members 0 and carries a thumbscrew B at its lower end, which is designed to engage and hold the clamp-support upon any fixed object. The shank portion B of the second clamp B is fastened between the lower upturned ends of the members C, and as said shank portions of the clamp members are flexible a saw may be frictionally engaged and held between the same. A plate 1) is mounted upon an :uljusting-screw D, passing through said plate and shank portion B, and clamping-jaws E project from the plate D, and one of said jaws carries a tighteningscrew whereby the plate may be clamped to a bench, board, or other fixed object, and by means of the thumb-screw E the clamping members B may be held at any desired angle.
Projecting from the upper end of the block A is a slotted plate F, from which depends a block K, which is slotted at its upper end, as at K, to receive a file I, which is held in said slot and upon a projection a of the block A by means of an adjusting-screw N when the device is to be utilized for jointing a saw. Mounted in one' face of the block A is an anvil M, pivoted at M, and a screw 0 is fastened to the upper swinging portion of said anvil, and a winged head 0 is mounted upon its outer end, whereby the angle of said anvil may be regulated. Mounted opposite the anvil, and in the walls of the block K, is a plunger Q, the end of which is adjacent to the inclined end of the handle R, which projects from said block immediately above the handle R, which is fixed or stationary. A springS is mounted upon said plunger and one end of the spring bears against one wall of the recess or slot in said block, while its other end bears against the end of the handle R, the purpose of the spring being to cause the plunger to retract after it has been pushed forward by pressing down on the lever. A thumb-screw J is mounted on the lower part of the block K and is adapted to clamp and hold a saw in place while being set.
Projecting from the block A are the arms a, the lower edges of which are fiush with the bottom of the block A, the purpose of said arms being to guide the device as it is moved back and forth upon the clamp member and hold the same securely at right angles to said clamp member.
In operation the mechanism for setting the saw is caught over one of the clamping members, and by the operation of the lever the plunger may be operated to cause the teeth to be properly set by their being forced against the adjustable tumbler or anvil. By the peculiar arrangement of the clamp members and means for holding the same the apparatus may be held at any angle and the blocks reversed and held upon the opposite edge of the clamp-block for convenience in setting the teeth. I
While I have shown a particular construction of apparatus embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood that I may make alterations in the detailed construction of the device without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1. A saw-setting apparatus comprising a block A having arms a projecting therefrom in opposite directions, the lower portion of said block having a hook A, a support for said block engaging said arms and hook, and
means for holding a saw against said block,
an adjustable anvil carried by said block, and lever-actuated mechanism for forcing the teeth of a saw against said anvil, as set forth.
2. A saw-setting apparatus comprising a block A and means for holding a saw to be set, against the face thereof, an anvil having its lower end conveXed and seated on the concaved bottom of a recess formed in the face of said block, the upper end of said anvil being contracted, a lug projecting downward from the top of said recess and serving as a stop to limit the outer throw of the anvil, a screw carried by said block and adapted to bear against said anvil, and leveractuated mechanism for forcing the teeth of a saw against said anvil, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK HUOT.
