PATENT OF ICE.
CHARLES F. HUNTOON,
PORATION OF ILLINOIS.
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO CHICAGO RAILWAY EQUIPMENT COMPANY,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A COR- BRAKE-BEAM- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters LPatent N 0. 769,384, dated September 6, 1904. Application filed February 27, 1904. Serial No. 195.602. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. HUNTooN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Brake- Beams, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved brake-beam. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4: of Fig. 1.
This invention relates to a new and useful lmprovement 1n brake-beams, and is designed more particularly as an improvement in that type of brake-beams wherein the compression member is made up of a commercially-rolled U-shaped form whose legs are substantially straight and slightly flaring, such as described with particularity in a companion application filed by me of even date herewith and serially numbered 195,601. In this present application I do not claim the construction of this compression member except as the same cooperates with the other features of the invention hereinafter described.
My present invention consists in the cpnstruction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, all as willbe hereinafter described, and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the compression member, which, as before stated, is substantially U-shaped in cross-section, the legs thereof being practically straight and slightly diverging. The ends of this compression member are seated in a, thrust-block 2, which thrust-block is provided with a corrugated periphery to receive an adjustable brake-head 3. I do'not claim in this application the construction of this thrust-block and its adjustable brake-head, as thesame is shown and de scribed in the Huntoon and Robischung Patent, No. 721,564, dated February'24, 1903.
4 indicates the tension member, in the form L of a rod, which passes between the flanges or legs of the compression member and thence through the thrust-blocks, serving to clamp said thrust-blocks in position on the ends of the compression member, nuts being employed in position and also holds the filler-block in place.
8 indicates the clip for the finger-guard,
which clip is provided with a spacing-lug 9,
fitting between and holding the legs of the compression member apart. The socket 10 of this clip is located on the under side of said clip and disposed at an angle so as to throw the finger-guard 11 upwardly to engage the flanges of the wheels for well-understood reasons.
Lugs 12 and 13 extend from the open side of the clip, the latter being provided with an inturned lip to engage the lug 12, and between this lip and the compression member is introduced a clamping-bolt 14, said bolt also serving as means of attachment for the brake hanger. This clamping bolt is the power which binds the clip on the compression member, and the lip on flange 13 acts as the fulcrum'whereby the clip is secured firmly in its position on said compression member.
I am aware that'minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a brake-beam, the combination with a T U-shaped compression member having legs which are substantially straight and slightly flaring, a thrust-block provided with 'a seat and lugs for spacing said legs apart, a tension member passing through the flanges of the compression member and through said thrustblock, and a brake-head adjustably mounted on said thrust-block; substantially as-described.
- '3. In a-brake-beam, the combination with a- U-shaped compression member, of a strut'or lever-post provided with an eye embracing said member", a filler-block having a seat, and. a wedge or key passing through thebase of said strut and engaging the seat of the filler block; substantially as described; r
4:. In a brake-beam, the combination of a U shapedcompression memb'er whose legs {are substantially straight and slightly flaring, a strut or lever-post having an eye embracing. said compression member, afiller-block arranged in the channel of said compression 3 member and having a seat facing thebase of the strut, and a Wedge or key inter-posed be? tween said seat and the base of said strut; substantially as described.
5; In a brake-beam, thecombination with a U-shaped compression member, of a clip having shoulders for spacing thelegs of saidspacing member, said clip having securing-flanges,
one of which is-provided with a lip engaging,
its companion, and a clamping-bolt passing. through said flanges between the lip and the compression member; said clampingbolt forming an attaching member for the brakehanger; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 23d day of February, 1904. I
CHARLES F. HUNTOON.
