Be it known that 1, JOHN R. DEISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Penn sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in gravity -lock car-couplings of the J anney type.
The object of my invention is to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character, and thereby render them more eflicient and durable-in use and less expensive to manufacture.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a car-coupling construction in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig; 2, showing the knuckle in its closed and opened positions in full and dotted lines. Fig. 4c is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line L L of Fig. 2, showing the gravity latch or pin in its lowered and raised positions in full and dotted lines. 1
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a draw-head formed with a cavity or recess 2, in which a knuckle 3 is adapted to swing horizontally in a manner common to this type of car-couplings. The said knuckle 3, which is pivoted to one side of the open front end of the draw-head on the usual knuckle-pin 4, has its inner end 5' formed with a right-angularly-shaped hook 6, which comprises a longitudinally-extending portionand a transversely-extending portion 8, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The said cavity 2 of the draw-head has one of its side walls formed with a horizontally-projecting stop 9, which is so disposed that it lies directly opposite the portion 7 of the hook f the knuckle when the latter is in its closed position, and coacting with said stop-shoulder and the hook 6 of the knuckle is a gravity latch or pin 10, which moves vertically in a transverselydisposed slot 11 formed in the top or upper side of the draw-head. The said latch or pin 10 consists of a flat plate of metal having its broad lower end 12 formed with a lock portion 13, a recessed or cut-away portion 14:, and a depending arm 15 and its upper reduced end 16, which slides in the said slot 11, formed with a vertically and angularly disposed slot 17. A horizontally-disposed key or pin 18 in the top of the draw-head projects transversely through said slots 11 and 17 and serves as both 'a stop to limit the vertical sliding movement of the latch or pin and a fulcrum or pivot to permit the same to have a transverse swinging movement.
The said recess 14: is slightly greater in width than the width of the portion 7 of the knuckle-hook 6 with which it is adapted to engage, and when so engaged. the said lock portion 13 enters the space between the stopshoulder 9 and the said portion 7 of the knuckle and serves as a lock to hold the latter in its closed position, as clearly shown by the full lines in Figs. 3 and 4. 'VVhen said knuckle is in its opened position, the latch or pin is supported in an elevated position upon the stop-shoulder 9, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig.4. The said depending arm 15 projects down into the hook 6 of the knuckle and coacts with its portion 8 to unseat the latch or pin from the stop-shoulder 9 when the knuckle is swung inwardly to its closed position and also to swing the knuckle outwardly to its opened position when the pin is elevated to its raised position. The latter ef fect is produced by the angular disposition of the slot 17 in'thelatch or pin and its coaction with the pin 18, which permits the latch or pin to have a swinging movement.
The operation and advantages of my improved coupling will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It
will be seen that when the latch or pin, which may beactuated by hand or by any suitable IOO mechanism, is raised or elevated the knuckle will be swung to its opened position and the latch or pin will seat itself upon the stopshoulder 9, as previously stated. \Vhen two couplings upon the adjacent ends of two cars are brought together, the knuckles will engage each other in the usual manner, and as soon as they have been swung inwardly to their closed positions the latches or pins will drop by gravity to lock them closed, the lock portions 13 of the latches entering the spaces between said stop-shoulders 9 and the-hooks 6 of the knuckles, as shown.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein set forth, since various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a coupling of the class described, the combination of a draw-head having a recess and a stop-shoulder on one side of the recess, said draw-head being further provided with a vertical opening in its upper side, a knuckle pivotally mounted in said recess for transverse angular movement and having at its inner end a hook which comprises a longitudinally-extending portion and a transverse]y-extending portion, a vertically-1novable latch-pin bearing against the stop-shoulder oi the drawhead, having a notch to engage the upper side of the longitudinal portion of the knucklehook, and a depending arm to one side of the longitudinal'hook portion, for the purpose set forth, said latch-pin being further provided with an upwardly-extending portion projecting through and movable vertically and also laterally in the opening in the upper side of the draw-head and having a laterallyinclined slot, and a pin connecting the latchpin to the draw-head and engaging said slot and serving as a guide, a limiting-stop and a pivot for said latch-pin, substantially as described.
