FASTENING FOR KNIFE-HANDLES.

vBe it known that we, GEORGE W. Honoris, residing at Morgan Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and GLovER S. HAsTINGs, residing at Plainville, in the county of Hartford and StateV of Connecticut, citizens of theUnited States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasten- Aings forKnife-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to knife-handles, and has for its object to produce a handle for knives, forks, spoons, or other tools of sanitary construction at a low cost and having strength, durability, and beauty.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure l illus? trates a side view, partly in section, of a knife embodying our improvements. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the rearward portion of a handle adapted to receive our improved heel-cap, as hereinafter set forth. Fig. 4 is a detail side view of a knife-blade having its-rearward or handle end of a suitable of the blade and handle, showing the method of fastening one to the other.
In the several figures similar parts are designated by similar characters of reference.
For the main part of the handle 1 we preferably employ glass or some other vitreous composition; but other molded materials can be used with equal efficiency in some forms of knives or tools, as can also wood, metal, ivory, or other substances suitably carved or pressed into the requisite shape. object of these protuberances and depressions is primarily to anchor the thimble 3 securely to the knife-handle by means hereinafter set forth and also to locate the inner surface of the sleeve portion of said thimble 3 at a uniformdistance from the surface of the end 2 of the knife-handle when in place on said It is also obvious that depressions or grooves in the end 2 of the knife-handle and inwardly-extending protuberanoes inside the thimble 3 would in some forms of knives answer the requirements equally well.
In Fig. 3 at the rearward end of the handle is shown a reduced portionli, which portion is provided with nicks or undercut depressions 5, whose function is that of retaining-points for a cap 7, of metal or of some plastic material, which construction is one of the features of our improvement.
At 6 is shown a sprue-or portion of a casting-gate, whose juncture with the end 4 of the handle l will form other retaining means for said cap 7. After the blade l0, thimble 3, and handle 1 have been assembled they are put into a suitable mold and a-rnetal or alloyof requisite hardness and fusible at a comparatively low temperature is poured into the mold and flows or is forced around both the inside and outside of the thimble 3, thereby locking the handle, sleeve, and blade securely to one another and forming a finishing-cover and reinforcing-envelop 13, 13, and 13h about the blade, shank, thimble, and handle end.
This improved construction leaves no opening between the blade and handle to catch dirt of any kind, and thereby provides a cleanly and sanitary article or pleasing appearance and durability.
The cap 7 for the rearward end of the handle may be cast on in a manner similar to that employed for the forward end. It is also obvious that materials other than metal may be used for the caps '7 and 13 and for locking the blade, thimble, and handle together. Various kinds of cement or other plastic material that would be of requisite hardness after setting may be employed. Neither do we limit our invention to the specific construction shown and described herein, but reserve to ourselves the right to vary said construction Within the spirit of our invention.
Having thus described our invention, we claim-- l. A handle, a thimble, a blade, said handle having at its blade end a reduced portion, said reduced portion provided with laterally-projecting protuberances adapted to contact with the inner Wall of the thimble and means interlocking said handle, thimble and blade.
2. A handle, a blade having horns at the handle end thereof, an integral thimble of metal having blade-supporting ears at one end thereof, and between said ears a blade-slot said handle and blade and interlocking means between said thimble and handle interlocking said handle blade and thimble, and means eX- terior of said thimble interlocking said blade, thimble, and rst interlocking means.
4. A device of the class specified comprising a blade of metal, a thimble of metal, a handle of glass, and metallic means completely filling the space between the thimble and handle, and interlocking said blade, thimble and handle, and metallic means exterior of said thimble interlocking said blade, thimble and iirst interlocking means and sealing all junctures of blade thimble, handle and first interlocking means.
