SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,187, dated September 6, 1904. Application filed February 9, 1903. Serial No. M2594. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AOOB SCHINNELLER, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvementin Registering Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to registering mechanism; and its object is to provide means for insuring the registration of all payments made to the person having the register in charge.
In apatent granted to me October 9, 1900, No. 659,421, I have described and claimed registering mechanism provided with a special indicator connected to the operative parts of the register and arranged to be operated at irregular intervals, said indicator being in the form of a plate having thereon the word Free or other suitable designation and which when displayed indicates that the person whose payment is being registered is entitled to a rebate, redeemable check, or other advantage, thus making the person who pays the money an interested party in seeing that the register is properly operated.
The present invention relates to the same subject-matter as my patent above referred to, and has for its purpose the same general object; but has for its special object several improvements over the invention described and claimed in said patent.
One of the special objects of the present invention is to provide a special register for counting the number of times that the special indicator is displayed, so that by sub.
tracting the number displayed by the special register from that displayed by the main register the actual number of payments on which no rebate or other advantage is granted can be determined.
Another object of the present invention is to make the special indicator, special register, and their controlling mechanism as an attachment separate from the main register, but adapted to be connected thereto or to its operating means, so that it may be attached to and used with existing registering mechanism of all kinds.

Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4, showing the position of the parts after the operating pawl has been retracted. In the drawings I have illustrated my invention in connection with a fare register adapted for use in public conveyances. I desire it to be understood, however, that it is not limited thereto, but may be used in connection with registers of all kinds and used for other purposes than that shown and that no limitations or specific structure or use are to be imposed upon the claims by either the drawings or description, the particular register shown having been selected for purpose of illustration merely.
In the drawings the main register is shown at 1, and this may be of any well-known form of registering mechanism having means for counting the number of actuations and also means for indicating the same, that shown being a diagrammatic illustration of one wellknown form of fare-register. The operating means for this register is shown at 2, comprising a vertically-sliding plate, to which is attached a cord or rope 3, passing over pulleys 4:, as the common practice in public conveyances. Any other operating means, however, might be employed.
The special register and special indicator are made as an attachment adapted to be operated in connection with the main register. They are shown as inclosed' in a casing 5, having secured thereto a bracket 6 or other means for attachment to the base-board of the main register or any other convenient point. The operating means for this attachment may be of any suitable kind, that shown comprising a link7, connected to the operating means 2 of the main register; but obviously this could be changed as necessary or desired. WVhile it is preferred to secure the attachment 5 directly to the main register or in close proximity thereto, this is not necessary, as it may besecured at some distance therefrom and suitably connected to the operating means of the main register as, for instance, in a public conveyance it might be placed in the end of the car opposite that in which the main register is placed, in which case its operating means would be connected or in such relation to the cord 3 or other operating means for the main register, so that the operating means of the attachment would be actuated whenever the main register is operated.
The special indicator of the present invention is arranged to be actuated electrically and may be of various forms-such, for instance, as a suitably-inscribed shutter operated by electric means, or check printing and delivery mechanism similarly operated, or, in fact, any display mechanism which can be operated or actuated electrically. As indicating such electrically-actuated means, 1 have shown diagrammatically an electric lamp 10, which will be flashed at the proper time and may be located behind a suitably-inscribed screen or the like. This lamp, however, has been shown for purposes of illustration merely. It is connected, by means of suitable circuit-wires 11, to terminals 12 in the casing 5, and the circuit through the electrically-operated indicator is closed at intervals by the mechanism now to be described.
Arranged centrally of the casing 5 is a shaft 14, upon which is pivoted one end of a lever 15, the outer end of which is connected to the link 7 or other operating device for the special indicator. The link 7 is shown as having a slot in its end which engages a stud 16 on the outer end of the lever 15, so that said link may have some lost motion with reference to the lever; but this is not necessary if the lever 15 is given a throw equal to the movement of the actuating-plate 2 of the main register. Connected to the lever 15 is a pawl 17, which rides over the peripheries of a plurality of toothed disks 19, mounted on the shaft 1a. Any number of these toothed disks may be employed, three being shown in the drawings, and they are provided on their peripheries with teeth which are engaged by the pawl, so that at each operation of the main register these toothed disks will be given a stepwise forward rotation. As the special indicator will preferably be operated at irregular intervals, as described in my patent aforesaid, the teeth on these disks will be spaced apart at different intervals, so that said disks will be moved by the pawl 17 through different distances. Each disk is provided with one or more deep notches 20, and when such notches in all of the disks come into alinement the pawl 17 will drop down into the same, and thus be in position to actuate the special indicator and special register. To prevent the backward rotation of the disks 19, a spring-pressed pawl 21 engages the teeth thereof. The severaldisks are spaced apart by stationary plates 22 and are held in close contact by the spring friction-plate 23, the same as described in my former patent. Also mounted on the shaft 14 is a rocking frame 25, comprising end pieces 26 and suitable connecting-bars 27. This rocking frame at its upper portion is provided with a shoulder 28 in such position that when the pawl 17 is held up by the toothed disks 19 it will not engage said shoulder, but when said pawl drops into the deep notches 20 it will engage the shoulder 28 and in its forward movement rock the frame 25 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 4:. Figs. 2 and 3 show the position of the parts when the pawl is held up by the disks 19, while Figs. 4 and 5 show the same in the position they assume when the pawl drops into the deep notches 20 of the disks. Connected to the frame 25 is a metallic circuitclosing strip 30, which when the frame is rocked to the position shown in Fig. 4 connects the two terminals 12 of the electric circuit, thus sending a current through the lamp 10 or other electrically-controlled indicating device. It will thus be seen that this special indicating device is operated at irregular intervals with reference to the operation of the register 1. I
It is evident that instead of having a circuitcloser actuated by the rocking frame 25 a display-shutter or the like can be carried directly by said frame. It is also evident that instead of having the circuit-closer on an attachment to the register it can be applied directly on the register by attaching it to the rocking frame of my prior patent.
In order that no confusion may arise as to whose payment is being registered when the special indicator is displayed, 1 provide means for preventing a further operation of the register whenever the special indicator is displayed. This means will assume the form of a lock to prevent the operation of the register and may be of various forms and applied in Various places. A convenient arrangement is shown in the drawings, wherein the link 7 is provided with a notch 31 and the lower end of the frame 25 has mounted thereon a spring-pressed pawl 33 in such position that when the rocking frame has been moved to display the special indicator and the operating-link 7 has been retracted, as shown in Fig. 6, the pawl 33 will engage the notch in the link, and thus prevent the same from being elevated. Inasmuch as this link is connected to the operating means for the register, it follows that the latter cannot be again operated until the link has been disengaged. This will insure the attention of the person having the register in charge and prevent any dispute that might arise as to whose payment was registered at the time the special indicator was displayed. Suitable means will be provided for disengaging the pawl 33 from the link 7. I have shown for this purpose a cord 34c, connected to a lug 35 on the rocking frame 26, so that by merely pulling on said cord the rocking frame 25 can be pulled back to its normal position, thus disengaging the pawl from the link and permitting the further 1 operation of the register. I also provide a special register for registering the number of times that the special indicator is displayed. This special register will preferably be actuated from the same means which actuate the special indicator, and I have therefore shown it inclosed in the casing 5 and operated from the rocking frame 25. As shown in the drawings, this special register comprises a plurality of registering-disks 36, mounted on a shaft 37 and the units-disk being provided with a toothed wheel 38, which is adapted to be engaged by a pawl 39 on a rocking arm 6L0, mounted on the shaft 37 and having its outer end connected, by means of a link 41, to the rocking frame 25. By this arrangement every time the frame 25 is rocked to display the special indicator the arm 40 will also be rocked thus moving the units-disk of the special register one step forward. spring-pressed pawl 42 is provided for preventing backward rotation of the units-disk of the special register. The movement of the units-disk will be transferred to the other disks of the special register by any suitable mechanismsuch, for instance, asthe gears 13 and 14 showalthough my invention is not as obviously any limited in this particular, form of well-known register might be used for this purpose.
The operation of my special indicator and special register is as follows: Each time the main register is operated the link 7 will be pushed upward. This causes the arm 15 and pawl 17 to be moved from-the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 3, and the pawl rotates the toothed disks 19 through a distance A suitable equal vto the distance between the respective teeth of said disk. Unless the deep notches 20 of all of said disks are in alinement the pawl is held elevatedthat is, in the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3'and thus does not engage the shoulder 28 on the rocking frame 25. moved and the rocking frame remains stationary. hen, however, the deep notches 20 in all of the disks come into alinement, which occurs at irregularintervals, the pawl 20 drops down into the same in position to engage the shoulder 28 on the rocking frame 25, and on the next forward movement of the link 7 said pawl will rock the frame from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 4c, thus through the link 41 operating the special register to register this movement and also carrying the circuit-closing strip 30 into position to bridge the terminals 12, thus providing a current through the special indicator and cansing the same to be displayed or operated. The link 7, arm 15, and pawl 17 will then be. retracted by the operating means 2 of the main register and will fall down into the position shown in Fig. 6. This brings the shoulder 31 on the link-underneath the end of the pawl 33 on the frame 25, and thus locks the link so that it cannot be again elevated, and preventing a further operation of the main register until the person having the same in charge has given proper attention and withdrawn the pawl from the notch in the link.
It will thus be seen that by my improvements the special indicator is operated at intervals, and the register is locked whenever the special indicator has been displayed, so that it cannot be again operated until the person having the same in charge has given attention thereto, thus preventing any dispute as to the proper person to receive the rebate or other advantage. Each display of the special indicator is registered on the special register, so that the subtraction of the numbers on this special register from those on the main register will determine the number of payments registered upon which no rebate or other advantage was allowed. The special register and' indicator operating device are so constructed that they are entirely separate from the main register, but so that they can be attached thereto or secured in any other convenient place, thus making it possible to apply the invention to any existing register without altering the construction of the latter.
TVhile I have shown my improvements applied to a fare-register, it is to be understood that they are not limited thereto, but can be applied to any type of register. It will be further understood that certain features of the invention, such as the means for preventing the operation of the register whenever the special indicator has been displayed and also the electrically-operated special indicator, can be applied by incorporatingthe same directly As a consequence, the disks 19 alone are in the register instead of having them formed as an attachment to be secured thereto. The special register for registering the number of times the special indicator is displayed also need not necessarily be formed as an attachment to the main register, but may be incorporated in the latter. Furthermore, when the invention is applied as an attachment tothe register the special indicator is not to belimited to an electrically-controlled one, but may be of any other kind. Furthermore,the special indicator and register may have a separate operating-cord running parallel and close to the operating-cord, so that both could be grasped by the person having the register in charge, it being merely necessary that the special indicator and register be operated Whenever the main register is operated. All such modifications I intend to cover by the claims as worded.
What I claim is 1. In registering mechanism, the combination with a main register, of an attachment therefor comprising a special register, and operating means arranged to operate the special register at irregular intervals with reference to the operation of the main register.
2. In registering mechanism, the combination with a main register, of a special register independent of said main register, and operating means arranged to operate the special register at irregular intervals with reference to the operation of the main register.
3. In registering mechanism, the combination with a main register and operating means therefor, of a special register independent of said main register, said special register comprising rotary registering-disks, controlling means arranged to actuate the same at irregular intervals with reference to the operation of the main register, a rocking frame for operating the controlling means, and connections between the main register operating means and said rocking frame for actuating the latter.
4. In registering mechanism, the combination with a main register and its operating means, of a special register independent of said main register, controlling means arranged to actuate the same at irregular intervals with reference to the operation of the main register, a rocking frame for operating said controlling means, and connections between said rocking frame and the main-register-operating means.
5. In registering mechanism, the combination with a main register, of an attachment for said main register comprising a special register, and connections between said special register and the main-register-operating means arranged to operate the special register at irregular intervals with reference to the operation of the main register.
6. In registering mechanism, the combination with the main register, of an attachment therefor comprising a special register, controlling means arranged to operate the same at irregular intervals,means for operating said controlling means, and a link connecting said means with the main register operating means.
7 In registering mechanism, the combination with a register, of a frame or casing independent of said register and including a special attention-attracting device, and operating means arranged to operate the special attention-attracting device at irregular intervals with reference to the operation of the register.
8. In registering mechanism, the combination with the main register, of a special indicator, connections between the same and the main register or its operating means for displaying the special indicator at intervals, and a special register arranged to be operate whenever the special indicator is displayed.
9. In registering mechanism, the combination with the main register, of a special indicator, connections between the same and the main register or its operating means, arranged to display the special indicator at irregular intervals, 2. special register, and means for operating the same whenever the special inclicator is displayed.
10. In registering mechanism, the combination with a main register, of a special indicator, controlling means for the special indicator comprising a plurality of disks having differently-spaced teeth and each having one or more deep notches, a pawl for actuating said disks, connections between the main-registeroperating means and said pawl, and a special register operated by said pawl When it falls into the deep notches of the disks.
11. In registering mechanism, the combination with the main register, of a special indicator, controlling means for said special indicator comprising a plurality of irregularlytoothed disks each having one or more deep notches, a pawl for actuating said disks, a rocking frame to which said pawl is connected, connections between the rocking frame and the main-register-operating means, a special register, and connections between the rocking frame and said special register for operating the latter.
12. In registering mechanism, the combination with the main register, of a special indicator, connections between the same and the main register or its operatingmeans for displaying the special indicator at intervals, a special register, and connections between the means for actuating the special indicator and said special register for operating the latter.
13. In registering mechanism, the combination with the register, of a special indicator,
operating means arranged to display the spe- I cial indicator at intervals only with reference to the operation of the register, and means for preventing the further actuation of the register when the special indicator is displayed.
14:. In a register, the combination with actuating means, of mechanism for indicating and registering the movements thereof, a special indicator, means intermediate the same and the actuating means for displaying the special indicator at intervals and means for preventing the further actuation of the actuating means when the special indicator is displayed.
15. Ina register, the combination with actuating means, of mechanism for indicating and registering the movements thereof, a special indicator, controlling means operated from said actuating means and arranged to display the special indicator at intervals, and a lock arranged to be brought into action when the special indicator is operated for preventing a further actuation of the actuating means.
16. In a register, the combination with actuating means, of mechanism for indicating and registering the movements thereof, a special indicator, a link intermediate the same and the actuating means for operating said special indicator at intervals, and a lock arranged to be brought into action when the special inclicator is operated and arranged to engage said link and prevent further operation of the actuating means.
17. In a register, the combination with actuating means, of mechanism for indicating and registering the movements thereof, a special indicator, a rocking frame for operating said special indicator, a link having a notch and connecting said rocking frame to the actuat ing means, and a pawl carried by said rocking frame and arranged to engage the notch in the link when the special indicator is displayed.
18. In registering mechanism, the combination with a main register, of a special register, connections between the same and the mainregister-operating means arranged to operate the special register at intervals, and means for preventing further operation of the main register when the special register is operated.
19. In registering mechanism, the com bination with a main register, of a special indicator, connections between the same and the main register or its operatingmoans for displaying the special indicatorat intervals, a special register arranged to be operated whenever the special indicator is displayed, and means for preventing further operation of the main register when the special indicator is operated.
20. In registering mechanism, the combination with a main register, of a special indicator, connections between the same and the main register or its operating means for displaying the special indicator at irregular intervals, a special register arranged to be operated whenever the special indicator is operated, and a lock brought into action when the special indicator is operated and arranged to prevent further operation of the main register.
21. In registeringmechanism, the combination with the main register, of a special indicator, controlling means for said special in dicator comprising a plurality of disks having difl erently-spaced teeth and each havi ng one or more deep notches, a pawl for actuating said disks, connections between the main-registeroperating means and said pawl, a special register operated by said pawl, and a lock arranged to be brought into action when the special indicator is operated and preventing the further operation of the main register.
22. In a register, the combination with actuating means, of mechanism for indicating and registering the movements of said actuating means, an electrically-operated attention-attracting device, and means including a circuitcloser operated by the actuating means for displaying the attention-attracting device at irregular intervals with reference to the operation of the actuating means.
23. In a register, the combination with actuating means, of mechanism for indicating and registering the movements of said actuating means, an electrically-operated attention-attracting device, and means operated by the actuating means for closing the circuit to said attention-attracting device at irregular intervals with reference to the operation of the actuating means.
24. In aregister, the combination with actuating means, of mechanism for indicating and registering the movements of said actuating means, an electrically-operated attention-attracting device, controlling means operated from the actuating means and arranged to be actuated at irregular intervals, and a circuitcloser for the attention-attracting device operated by said controlling means.
25. In a register, the combination with actuating means, of mechanism for indicating and registering the movements of said actuating means, an electrical]y-operated attention-attracting device, a circuit-closer therefor, a plurality of movable bodies each provided with one or more notches or openings, means operated from the actuating means and adapted to move said bodies through different distances, and a circuit-closer for the attention-attracting device arranged to be actuated when the notches or openings of the movable bodies are in a certain relation to one another.
26. In registering mechanism, the combination with a main register, of an electrically-operated indicator, means operated from the main register or its operating means for closing the circuit through said indicator at intervals, and a special register arranged to be operated whenever the indicator is operated.
27. In registering mechanism, the combination with a main register, of an electricallycontrolled indicator, a plurality of disks having differently-spaced teeth and each having one or more deep notches, a pawl actuated from the main-registor-operating means and arranged to actuate sa1d disks, a c1rcu1t-closer for the indicator, and a special register, both arranged to be actuated by said pawl when it drops into the deep notches of the disks.
28. In registering mechanism,the combination with a main register, of a special register, operating means arranged to actuate the special register at irregular intervals only with reference to the operation of the main register, and means for preventing the further actuation of the main register when the special register has been actuated.
29. In registering mechanism,the combination with a main register, of a special register, controlling means therefor operated from the main-register-aetuating means and constructed to operate the special register at irregular intervals with reference to the operation of the main register, and a lock arranged to be brought into action when the special register is operated and acting to prevent further operation of the main register.
30. In registering mechanism,the combination with a main register, a special register, controlling means therefor comprising a plurality of movable bodies provided with one or more notches or openings, means controlled from said notches or openings when they are in a certain relation to one another for operating said special register,and means operated whenever the mainregister is operated for moving said bodies different distances.
31. In registering mechanism, the combination with a main register and its operating means, of a special register, controlling means therefor comprising a plurality of disks having differently-spaced teeth and each having one or more deep notches, a pawl for actuating said disks, connections between the main: register-operating means and said pawl, and means operated by said pawl when it falls into the deep notches of the disks for actuating said special register.
32. In registering mechanism, a main register, a special indicator, an actuator for said register adapted to display said indicator at intervals other than the intervals of operation of said main register, and means for counting the number of times the indicator has been displayed.

In registering mechanism, a main register, actuating means for said register, a special indicator, means controlling the same to cause the same to be displayed at intervals other than the intervals of operation of the main register. said means being operated by the register-actuating means, and a register to count the number of times the indicator is displayed.

In registering mechanism, a main register, actuating means for said register, a special indicator, means controlling the same to cause the same to be displayed at intervals other than the intervals of operation of said main register, said means being operated by the register-actuating means, and a register actuated by the indicator-controlling means to count the number of times the indicator has been displayed.

In registering mechanism, a main register, controlling means therefor, an electric signal, means controlled by said register-controlling means for operating said signal at intervals other than the intervals of operation of said main register, and a register to count the number of operations of said signal.

In registering mechanism, a main register, actuating means therefor, an electric signal, means controlled by said actuating means for operating said signal at intervals other than the intervals of operation of said main register, and a register controlled by said signal-controlling means to count the number of operations of said signal.
37. In registering mechanism, a main register, actuating means therefor, an electriclight signal, means controlled by said actuating means for making visible said signal at intervals other than the intervals of operation of the main register, and a register associated with said controlled means for counting the number of times the light has been made visible.
