Be it known that I, CHARLES GABRIEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,
in the county of Cook-and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Flue-Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a device for cutting flues out of boilers, the object being to provide a simple device of this character which is easily and quickly operated and will cut the fines smoothly without leaving a ragged edge thereon; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed. p
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is acentral longitudinal section of'a power-operated flue-cutter constructed in accordance with my invention.

Referring now "to said drawings, A indicates the cutter-head of a flue-cutter construct ed in accordance with my invention, which consists of a hollow cylinder provided at one end With an annular flange B and stem 0, while at its forward end it is annularly cut away to provide a seat for a removable collar D, said reduced forward end of said cylinder being internally threaded to receive the threaded end of a nut E. Said nut E is provided with an annular flange F, which is adapted to' the periphery: and in which blocks I are movably mounted, said blocks I being provided with recesses J in their ends, in which cutterwheels K are revolubly mounted, the said cut- Serial No. 176,207. At their ends said blocks I are provided with inclined T-shaped recesses L, which are adapted to receive similarly-shaped ribs M on a shaft N, passing longitudinally through said cylinder A and through the hollow stem C thereof, its forward end passing through a central openingin said nut E. The said ribsM are likewise inclined or tapered, so that as said shaft N is moved longitudinally relatively-to said cylinder A said blocks I will be moved radially to bring said cutter-wheels K into and out of operative position. said hollow stem (1- is provided with a longitudinal slot 0, which receives a cross-head P, mounted in the rear end of said shaft N and connected at its ends with the piston Q of a cylinder R, mounted upon the rear end portion ofsaidstem C. Said cylinder R isopen at its forward end and at its rear end terminates in what may be termed a hollow trunnion-S, which receives said stem C, and is held in position on said stem by means of a set-screw U. At its rear end said trunnion is threaded to receive a'fianged nut V, which is adapted to compress packing against the end of said trunnion and around said stem C toform a stufling-box. At its rear end said stem 0 is externally threaded to be thus mounted uponfthe rotating member of a compressed-air motor generally used in boiler- 'shops. The said cylinder R is connected with a source of supply of compressed air through the duct W and transverse opening X in said stem C, said compressed air serving to force said piston Q outwardly, thereby moving said shaft N forward and said blocks I outwardly.
The operation of my device is as follows: The collar D is interchangeable and coincides in diameter with the flues to becut. After placing the proper collar in position and coninder A is inserted in the flue so that the flange B bears against the end thereof. The motor is then brought into operation and simultaneously compressed air is admitted to the cylinder R, thereby causing said cutter- The .necting the stem G with the motor said cyl- .IOO
wheels K to bear upon the inner wall of the flue. The motor rapidly rotates my device, thus causing said wheels K to out said flue. As soon as the latter has been cut the compressed air is shut ofi? from the motor and exhausted from said cylinder R, and by means of the cross-head P the shaft N is drawn back to draw said cutter-wheels K inwardly and permit withdrawal of said cylinder A from the flue.
My device may be modified to enable it to be operated by hand, as shown in Fig. 5. When thus modified, the cylinder R is omitted, the stem C is cut off a short distance back of the cylinder A, and in its rear end a radial recess Y is provided, in the walls of which I provide grooves Z. In said recess Y a nut Yis inserted, which is provided with a circular flange Y adapted to enter said groove Z, said nut being thus held against longitudinal movement relatively to said stem C. The rear end of said shaft N is threaded to receive said nut Y, so that by turning said nut relatively to said stem 0 said shaft N will be moved longitudinally to actuate the block I and cutter-wheels K. Said stem C is provided with a polygonal collar Z, adapted to receive a wrench Z by means of which the device is rotated.
My said device is very simple and efficient and cuts the flues smoothly and rapidly, leaving no ragged edges.
To vary the distance of the cut from the end of the flue,washers may be inserted over said cylinder A, thus holding said flange B at a given distance from the end of the flue and cutting the latter nearer the end thereof.
I claim as my invention A flue-cutter comprisinga cylindrical head, a hollow shank at one end of same, an annular flange on said end of said head, an annular shoulder of less diameter than said head at its forward end, a removable collar of greater diameter than said head, mounted on said shoulder, a nut adapted to enter said head at its forward end and having an annular flange engaging said collar to hold same in place, a central opening in said nut, a hollow shank atthe rear end of said cutter-head, having longitudinal slots, a plurality of radial guides in said head, cutter-heads mounted in said radial guides, said cutter-heads being provided with inclined T-shaped guide-slots in their inner ends, a shaft movable longitudinally in said head and said shank and having a tapered enlargement between its ends, T- shaped longitudinal guides on said tapered enlargement adapted to enter said guide-slots in said cutter-heads, a cross-head on said shaft projecting through said slots in said shank and devices on said shank engaging said crosshead for moving same longitudinally relatively to said cylindrical head and cutters, for imparting radial movement to the latter, comprising a cylinder, closed at one end, rigidly mounted concentrically on said shank, a piston longitudinally movably mounted on said shank within said cylinder, rigid connection between said piston and said crosshead and means for supplying fluid, under pressure, to said cylinder to impart relative motion to said piston substantially as and for the purpose described.
