B is a stand or support, through which the shafts passes, and which also-secures the intermediate wheel 6; From the description-given, it must be evident that, if the shaft carrying. the reversing-wheel R and the lever L be-revolved in either direction, the hollow cylinder 0 C will be made to revolve in the opposite direc= tion with a velocity'whieh will bear the ratio tothe velocity of the shaft of the coggeddiameter of the reversing wheel It to the interior diameter of O, and that the wheel D will revolve with avelocity due to the direct velocity of L, the reverse velocity of C, and'the ratio of the diameter ,of' the wheel D to the interior diameter of the cylinder 0. 1 I In the drawings herewith submitted, t he diameter of the wheel Bis onehalf of that of the cylinder G, and
therefore, for each direct revolution of the shaft, the cylinder will make one-half of arevolution in the opposite direction. The diameters of the multiplying-wheels D, E, and F are one-half of the diameter of the-cylinder. The wheel D revolves four times, the wheel E thirteen times, and the wheel]? forty times, for each revolution of the shaft. By comparinggthese numbers, the law of increase of velocity of rotation will. be evident, vii,
the velocityof any wheel is equal to unity increased by three times the velocity of the multiplying-wheel next preceding. I 1 I 'By' increasing the ratio of the interior diameter of the cylinder to the diameter of the reversing-wheel'lt,
the reverse motion ofB will be correspondingly increased; as also the direct motion of D, E, and F. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, asfollows, viz-z I 1. 2. I claim the straps g, g, g, and g, and their equivalents, when employed to sustain and strengthen ,the ends of the axes on whiehthe intenn'edinte wheels P, P, and P revolve.
3. I Claim the reversible hollow' cylinder 0, by moons of one or more wheels, R and b, one having an axis coincident with the axis of the shaft, and the other or others parallel therewith.
