ELMER J. BLISS, OF EDGARTOVVN, MASSACHUSETTS.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,892, dated August 30, 1904.
Application filed November 3, 1903. Serial No. 179,695. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER J. BLIss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Edgartown, Massachusetts, county of Dukes, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to advertising devices, and more particularly to a device that is intended to advertise cigars, cigarettes, and the like by the use of a human model constructed and arranged to smoke the cigars automatically.
In its general features the invention comprises a model provided with a chamber in the mouth portion of the head, which has communication with a tubular cigar or cigarette holder through which air is drawn, the in drawn air containing the smoke to be expelled through the mouth-orifice. -The model may also be provided with flexible diaphragms forming cheeks, which may be alternately distended-and drawn in to correspond to the movement of the human cheeks in smoking.
These and other features constituting this invent-ion will be more fully set forth in the following specification and will be clearly defined in the claims forming part thereof.
\Vhile it will be understood that the invention is capable of considerable modification in its details of construction and arrangement, I have shown in the drawings a preferred mode of embodying my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of a model of the human figure equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal section on the plane indicated by line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing the construction of the apparatus in the mouth portion of the device. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a slightlymodified form of the invention.
In the form of my invention illustrated in the drawings I construct a model of the human form, including the body portion a and the head portion Z). The body or trunk 64 is made hollow, provided with a suitable door a to close the interior, which contains any suitable operating mechanism. In this case the operating mechanism comprises a small electric motor 0, operated from an electric battery 0',
which may be placed inside the trunk and provided with a circuit-closer d, preferably placed at some easily-accessible point. The motor 0 is mechanically connected with a reciprocating piston-rod c of the air-pump e. The pumpchamber is provided with a connecting-tube 0 whose upper end is in communication with a tube or chamber f, arranged in the mouth portion of the model. In this case the chamber f has apertures at either side adjacent to flexible diaphragms or cheek-pieces g, which are arranged in the face of the model to simulate cheeks. The chamber f is also in communication with a tubular holder it, adapted to hold a cigar, cigarette, pipe, or like article to be smoked. The rear end of the tubular holder It may be provided with a check-valve it, which allows air to pass through the tube into the chamber f, but prevents its return in the opposite direction. Alongside of the cigarholder is the mouth-orifice i, which is provided with a check-valve 2 which prevents air from passing inward through the mouth-orifice to the chamber f, while allowing the expulsion of air from the chamber f out through the mouth-orifice.
In the operation of my device the circuit is closed at (Z, thus causing the pump to be actuated, the descent of the piston drawing air in through the holder it, while the ascending movement of the piston eXpels the indrawn air, which has become laden with smoke from the ignited cigar, out through the mouth-orifice t'. At the same time that the air is drawn in to cause the burning of the cigar the cheeks g are also drawn in in order to simulate the checks of one smoking. Upon the expulsion of the air the checks are distended.
In order to obtain a normal distension or plumpness of the cheek-pieces g, I may provide, as shown in Fig. 3, a somewhat larger cheek-cavity. which may be filled with cotton-batting, wool, or other easily-compressed substance which will not interfere with the passage of air to contract or draw in the cheeks.
Without attempting to set forth all the changes in form, construction, and arrangement that may be made in embodying the principles of my invention or all the uses to which said invention may be applied, What I claim is- 1. A model provided with a chamber in the mouth portion of the head, a cigar-holder arranged to communicate with said chamber, flexible cheek pieces arranged adjacent to openings in said chamber, and an air-pump having communication with said chamber to draw air into said chamber and to expel it therefrom, substantially as described.
2. The advertising device comprising a model, the flexible cheek-pieces connected thereto, an interior chamber having the apertures adjacent to said cheek-pieces, an airinlet and an air-outlet passage, and a device for drawing in air and expelling it to simulate the action of smoking, substantially as described.
3. The advertising device embracing in its construction the model, the transverse chamber located in the mouth portion of the model, a pump communicating therewith, a tubular inlet-passage, and an outlet-passage, both communicating with said transverse chamber, and flexible cheek-pieces adjacent to the ends of said transverse passage, substantially as described.
4. The advertising device embracing a model provided with cheek-pieces, means for normally distending the cheek-pieces, means for drawing air into the interior of the model and expelling it therefrom alternately to operate said cheek-pieces, substantially as described.
5. A device of the class described embracing in its construction the hollow model provided with an air passage or chamber whose ends are covered with flexible diaphragins, valved-controlled inlet and outlet passages, the inlet-passage being formed as a holder for a cigar, and means for alternately drawing in and expelling the air, substantially as described.
6. A device of the class described embracing in its construction the model provided with an air passage or chamber, whose ends are covered with flexible diaphragms, the end portions of said passage being provided with a porous compressible mass of fiber, a pump for indrawing and expelling air, said pump having communication with the aforesaid passage in order to increase or diminish the internal air-pressure adjacent to the diaphragms to simulate the action of the checks in smoking, substantially as described.
7 A device for simulating the action of smoking, embracing a model whose cheek portions are provided with openings covered with flexible diaphragms, said model having also an inlet-tube adapted to hold a cigar, and an outlet-tube, combined with means for simultaneously drawing in air through the inlet-tube and drawing in the flexible diaphragms, said means acting also to simultaneously expel air and puff out said diaphragms, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of October, 1903.
