PATENT BENJAMIN H. SNAVELY, OF BRUNNERVILLE, AND THOMAS H. KELLER,
OF LITITZ, PENNSYLVANIA.
CIGAR-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,777, dated August 30, 1904.
Application filed January 9, 1899. Serial No. 701,601. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be itknown that we, BENJAMIN H. SNAVELY,
residing at Brunnerville, and THOMAS H. Ken-- LER, residing at Lititz, in the county of Lancaster, State of Pennsylvania, citizens of the United States, have invented certain Improvements in Cigar-BIaohines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of devices designed for spreading the wrappers of cigars as said wrappers are drawn into a pocket to be rolled around the fillers; and the object of this invention is to employ brushes for so spreading the wrappers.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
This invention is shown and described, but not claimed, in Letters Patent of the United States No. 617 ,366 for an improvement in cigar-machines, issued to us on the 10th day of January, 1899.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which* Figure l is an elevation of the front of a portion of a cigar-machine embodying our improvements, wherein the frame carrying the spreading-brushes is elevated to show the various parts in the positions occupied thereby, when a wrapper is to be put in place to be rolled around the'filler of a cigar; and Fig. 2, a top plan view showing the parts of the machine in the same position. Fig. 3 is a front perspective view wherein the frame carrying the spreading-brushes is lowered to show the various parts in the positions occupied thereby after a wrapper is secured in place to be rolled around the filler of a cigar; Fig. 4, a rear elevation of the parts occupying the same positions as shown in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 a vertical section on broken line 5 5 of Fig. 4:.
Similar letters and numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the details of the drawings, A indicates the stationary platform of a cigarmachine in which are two longitudinal slots (1/ and a.
In front of platform A are arranged a series of five rollers b, 6, 6 t and 6*, whereby is formed a longitudinal pocket in which the bunches. or fillers are placed to have the wrappers applied thereto, as is usual.
For the purposes of this specification the end of the machine toward which the tuck end of the cigar is formed will be termed the tuck end and that at which the head of the cigar is formed the head end.
On platform A is a reciprocating table D, that moves thereon longitudinally of the rollers. This reciprocating table is actuated through a vertically-d isposed shaft D, extending upv through slot (0 of platform A and through an opening in a horizontally-disposed lug 2 on the tuck end of the reciprocating table, through which connection-shaft D imparts motion to said table.
On the upper end of shaft D is a bevelgear (1, located somewhat above reciprocating table D.
On the end of reciprocating table D toward the tuck end of platformA are arms cZ, Figs.
3, 4:, and 5, whereinis journaled the hinge-' rod F of a frame carrying a fiat brush for pressing a cigar-wrapper to table D as said wrapper is drawn between the rollers and beneath circular brushes for spreading the same, which circular brushes are also carried by said frame. This frame has a horizontal bar F, disposed parallel with hinge-rod F,- and on said horizontal bar are lugs f, wherein hinge-rod F is secured.
On the side of horizontal bar F opposite lugs f are formed arms F F, Fig. 2. In bearings f on the free ends of arms F F is journaled an approximately horizontal shaft F*, having on its front end outside of the adjacent arm F a circular brush F and on the opposite end outside of arm F a gear-wheel f and at one side of and below shaft F is a shaft F, having on the end journaled in arm F a gear-wheel f that meshes with gearwheel From arm F shaft F is inclined toward the tuck end of the machine and carries on the extremity of the end journaledin arm F and outside of and lapping brush F a circular brush F Where brushes F and F f of a depending rod F to a tongue on the lower end whereof is secured a horizontally-disposed brush F which when the parts are in an operative position. presses the wrapper upon reciprocating table D and maintains the same as it is drawn from said table in proper relation to the pocket formed by rollers b 7).
Rigidly secured on hinge-rod F is a lever, (see Figs. 1, 3, and L) one arm, F, whereof extends upward and toward shafts F and F and which has on its free end a weight F The other arm, F, of said lever extends downward through slot a of platform A and through it the brush-carrying frame is automatically thrown up by a mechanism not herein shown or described to permit a wrapper to be placed on the reciprocating table D in position to be drawn between the rollers before described.
In operating, the ln'ush-carrying frame being raised so as to uncover the reciprocating table D and the whole length of the entrance to the pocket formed by saidrollers b b, as seen in F 1 and 2, the wrapper is put in place on said table, as shown by broken lines W, with the tuck end of the same covering the tuck end of the bunch or of the fillers in said pocket and then said wrapper is secured in position by lowering the brush-carrying frame, so that the brushes secure the wrapper in place. As the wrapper is drawn into said pocket brush F presses the same down on reciprocating table D and guides it in the proper direction as it passes from said table, while brushes F" and F spread said wrapper. The brush-carrying frame is raised from or lowered into an operative position by hand by grasping weight F, or it may be raised or lowered in any other convenient way, automatically or otherwise. Reciprocating table D is actuated to move over stationary platform A and lengthwise of the roller-pocket through vertical shaft D, which travels back and forth through slot a, revolving at the same time in such manner as to impart rotary motion to shafts F and I when the ln'ush-carrying frame is in operative position, the lever F F at the same time traveling back and forth through slot (4. At the head end thereof slot a curves somewhat from slot a and toward the roller-pocket. This tends to draw lever F F slightly behind shaft 1) and to turn table D and draw the front thereof somewhat toward said pocket, changing the direction of the feed of the wrapper to the bunch or filler beingrolled therein in said pock t, thus aiding in giving thedesired taper to the head of the cigar. To permit this slight change in the relative positions of shaft D and the lever F F, said shaft I) has sufiicient play in slot a to allow it to tilt slightly.
\Ve do not confine ourselves to the particular construction of the actuating mechanism, nor to that of the stationary platform and reciprocating table herein shown and described, as they do not form any part of this invention, and it is obvious that many changes may be made therein without departing from the principle and scope of our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination, a table, mechanism for rolling a wrapper about a filler, reversely-revoluble disk-like brushes disposed in different planes approximately parallel with said rolling mechanism, and means for revolving said brushes, for the purpose specified.
2. In combination, a table, mechanism for rolling a wrapper about a filler, reversely-revoluble dish-like brushes having their axes approximately in the same. horizontal plane, the disk-like brushes being approximately parallel with said. rolling mechanism, and means for revolving said brushes, for the purpose specified.
3. In combination, reversely-revoluble circular brushes having their peripheries lapping the one over the other, a table, and means for revolving said brushes, for the purpose specified.
4. In combination, reversely-revoluble circular brushes disposed in different planes and having their peripheries lapping the one over the other, a table, and means for revolving said brushes, for the purpose specified.
5. In combination, reversely-revoluble circular brushes having their peripheries lapping the one over the other, a plate interposed between the lapping portions of the brushes, a table, and means for revolving said brushes, for the purpose specified.
6. In combination, reversely revoluble brushes disposed in different planes and having their peripheries lapping the one over the other, a plate interposed between the lapping portions of the brushes, a table, and means for revolving said brushes, for the purpose specified.
7. The combination, in a cigar-machine, of a table, mechanism for rolling a wrapper about a filler, means for pressing a wrapper to the table as the same is drawn therefrom to be rolled around the filler, reversely-revoluble circular brushes disposed in different planes between the table and the rollingmechanism and longitudinally of said. mechanism other, and means for revolving said brushes,
for the purpose specified.
9. The comblnation, 1n a cigar-machine, of
a table, mechanism for rolling a Wrapper I5 about a filler, reversely revoluble circular brushes disposed in different planes between the table and the rolling mechanism and having their peripheries lapping the one over the other, a plate interposed between the lapping 2 portions of the brushes, and means for revolving said brushes, for the purpose specified.
