PATENT OEE-ICE.
MULTIPLE-CYLINDER ENGINE.
i SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 768,460, dated August 23, 1904.
l Application filed January l2, 1904. Serial No. 188,710.V (No model.)
T LZ/ whom, it nul/y con/cern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD ALRERCI.` JONES, a citizen of England, residing at Fiume, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiple-Cylinder Engines, of which the following is a specifica-` lating more particularly to the connection or' the oscillating piston-rods with the piston and the common crank-pin.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- F igurel shows a piston-rod .adapted to oscillate and constructed in accordance with this invention, together with crank-pin andpis'-V ton, in partial vertical section. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line A B of Fig l, in which the positions of the (four, for example) oscillating piston-rods acting upon the crank-pin are shown. Fig. Bis a partial horizontal section on the line@ D of Fig. l. Fig. I is a side elevation of the crank-disk as viewed from the left-hand side of Figs. l and 3. Fig.A 5 represents the piston separately by means of a section on the lineEF of Fig. 1. Figs. 6, 7 and 8, 9 illustrate two details, respectively.
The piston-rods a are connected with the piston by means of a cylinder-joint, which is constituted on the one hand by the cylindrical boss c on the upper face of thepiston and on the other hand by a narrow plate d,
, curved in accordance with the surface of the d, with which it forms one piece.
boss c 'and forming the toot of the piston-rod This footplate d is seized on its two narrow lateral edges, curved in accordance with the cylinderface, by two pins ff, which are h'alfcutaway The connection of the oscillating pistonrods t with the crank-pin 7c is effected by the provision on both sides of this pin upon each ot' the two crank-disks e' of an annular protuberance m, concentric with the crank-pin k. These two annular protuberances m constitute a slideway into which the lateral edges of plates n, curved in accordance with the ra- `dius of the crank-pin lo and forming the heads of the piston-rods a, extend, the width of these plates being calculated in such a manner that the head-plates ai, Fig. 2, corresponding to the various piston-rods a, aa a, do not impede each other on the rotation of the crank.
In order to permit of the introduction of the head-plates n of the separate piston-rods a into Ythe slideway running'on both sides of the pin,
the protuberances m, constituting this slideway, are each recessed at q 1n such a manner that the start and finish of the recesses in the two annular protuberances m each fall in the same generatrix. When the head-plates n of all the piston-rods a have been introduced into the slideway, the two recesses Q are closed by means of pins p, one of which is let into each of l[he crank-disks, which pins (see Figs. 2 and 3 and 6 to 9) are partially cut away, so as to correspond With the annular groove, and are held in position owing to the fact that their head r, bent at right angles,is let into a corresponding recess formed on the outer side of the crankdisks c', Fig'S, by means oil a screw-bolt t, passing through the crank-pin 7c and the disks 7l, and of which the head s islet into the head fr of the left -hand pin ,19, While its end is screwed into the head 7" of the right-hand pin The two pinsppare connected one with the vother and With the crank, `sothat it is impos- Lft crank-pin f is rigidly connected on both sides with the crank-disks t' this sleeve is made in two parts.
.l clainr number of connectingrods act on a single cran k-pin the connection of the connecting-rod heads with the crank-pin, consisting of an annular slideway running on both sides of the pin and eoncentrically therewith and recessed for the admission of the rod-heads, and' in which the connecting-rod heads are guided and means for closing the slideway, substantially as described.
2. In multiple-cylinder engines, in which a number of connectingrods act on a single crank-pin the connection of the oscillating pistonrods with the piston, consisting of the provision of a cylinder-joint, consisting of a cylindrical boss upon the outer side of the piston and a plate forming the foot of the connectingrods or piston-rods and concentric with the surface of the boss, which plate is seized by pins let into the cylinder-wall and suitably cut away substantially as described.
3. In multiple-cylinder engines, a plurality of 'connecting -rods having heads, a single crank-pin therefor, a connection for thc rodheads and crank-pin consisting' of an annular shdeway running on both sides of the pln and concentric therewith and recessed 'lor the adl. In multiple-cylinder engines, 1n which a mission ofthe rod-heads, and in which the rodheads are guided, and detachable pins {ixcd in the crank-disks and having heads for closing the recesses formed in the slideway.
4f. In multiple-cylinder engines, a plurality of connecting -rods having heads, a single crank-pin therefor, a connection between the said heads and crank-pin comprising an annular slideway running on both sides of the said pin and concentric therewith and recessed for the admission of the rod-heads and in which thc said heads are guided, detachable pins carried by the crank-disks having heads for closing the recesses in said slideway, said heads of the pins being rectangularly bent, and a screwholt common to said heads and passed through the crank-pin and the crank-disks.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
