Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
JOHN OONE, OFu MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO PETER FREI AND NICHOLAS BARTH, OF SAME PLACE.
OSCILLATING sTEAMfENGlNE.
e SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,964, dated J une 9, 1891.
Application filed December 22, 1890. Serial No. `375,494. (No model.)
by which the end of piston-rod M is connected by any suitable form of connection.
Assuming P to be the steam-inlet port, wlien the engine is on the center, as shown in Fig. l, abutment A closes the inlet-port P. When the engine is thrown off the center, one of the inlet-ports A connects with the port P, and steam passes to the end of the cylinder with which the port connects. At the same time the opposite exhaust-port B is brought in connection with the exhaust-port Q, and steam is exhausted from that end of the cylinder. As the piston C moves, the cylinder L, with its wings O, is oscillated in one direcyss each provided with a IlangeR for connection tion for the rst half of the stroke and then with the bed-plate, and each provided with a in the other direction for the second half of threaded opening and a port for steam or eX- the stroke, until finally at the end of the haust pipe, (marked P and Q.) stroke the ports again assume the position L represents an engine-cylinder containing shown in Fig. l, except that the piston C is 7o zo a piston C and piston-rod M, connected thereat the other end of the cylinder. A continued with by a nut c. On two opposite sides of motion of the crank Gcarries thel engine over the cylinder L'are formed wings O, (shown in the center, when steam is admitted to the section in Fig. l and in dotted lines in Fig. other inlet-port A and exhausted through the 2,) which are turned semicircular to iit into other exhaust-port B and a reverse stroke 75 2 5 the inner surface of casings K K and are takes place, thus completing a revolution. preferably coun-tersunk into said casings, as The wings O may be turned to accurately fit shown in dotted lines at E E, Fig. 2. In the interior of the casing K at all points of these wings O are formed two steam-ports A contact, or for the purpose of diminishing A, which lead from the two ends of cylinder friction may be made to lit closely only near 8o 3o L and are separated by the abutment A', the openings of the inlet and exhaust ports and two exhaust-passages B B, which lead from the ends of cylinder L and are separated by the abutment B', the abutment A being substantially the same width as the port P through one casing K and the abutment B being substantially the same width as the port Q through the other casing K, so that said abutment-s open and close said openings.
I-I represents a stufing-box on the end of cylinder L.
T T represent lugs cast on casings K opposite the openings P and Q, and D represents tension-springs, by which said lugs T T are connected, thus holding said casings against the wings O with an adjustable and elastic pressure.
U U represent lugs on the upper side of casings K K, by which said casings are bolted together.
Gr represents a crank, and E a wrist-pin,
A and B.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` 1. An oscillating engine having a cylinder with semicircular wings on opposite sides thereof, each wing having ports leading from a point near its center to the ends of the cylinder and separated at their outer ends by an abut-ment, and two semicircular casings adapted to fit said Wings closely and each having therein a port adapted to register with the abutment in one of the wings when the engine is on the center, and a spring connection between said casings, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an oscillating engine, the combination of a cylinder having semicircular wings formed Aon the opposite sides thereof chamfered at their periphery and having steam and exhaust passages formed therein, and two seniicircular casings countersunk to receive 'IOS semicircular casings countersunk to receive the chamfered periphery of said Wings and 1o connected by un adjustable elastic connection, substantially as shown and described.
