To (Y/N1 whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW NEILsON, a citizen of theUnited States of America, residing at Wilson, in the county-of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements in SWaging- Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to swaging-tools, and more particularly to that class known as punches and cutters; and my invention consists in combining a punch and a cutter in such a manner that the construction of the same will be new and novel. A further object of my invention is to construct a combined cutter and punch which can be readily attached to an anvil, whereby the size, detachable dies being employed in connection with thepunch whereby any suitable die may be attached thereto.
With the above, and other objects in view reference will be 'had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application,
wherein like numerals of reference indicate and its appurtenant parts removed. Fig. 4: is a side elevation of a portion of my improved cutter and punch, showing the same having a die thereon when the same is to be used as a punch. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 6 is an edge view of my improved cutter and punch,showing a die in position thereon. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the dies, and Fig. 8 is a detail perto placing the rod therein.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown frame upon which the cutter and the punch mechanism is mounted. Upon the upper hori zontal arm 5 of the S-shaped frame I form a boss6, and centrally of said boss I form a square aperture 7, through which passes the cutter-rod 8, this rod being screw-threaded upon its ends, as indicated at 9 and 10, the lower end of said rod passing through an annula'r aperture 11, formed in. the central horizontal arm 12 of the S-shaped frame, and prior to placing this rod between these horizontal arms a nut 14 is interposed between these arms, and the rod 8 is screwed in said nut until the same assumes the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A spiral spring 15 is also placed upon the rod prior to placing it in position, this spiral spring being interposed between the horizontal arm and a spanner 16, this spanner also having been interposed between the horizontal arms prior This spanner 16 carries an upwardly-extending lug 17, which is swiveled by a pin 18 in the bifurcated end 19 of. the horizontal arm5, the outer end 20 of the spanner extending beyond the bifurcated end 19 of the arm 5, and the object of this construction will be more fully described in the general operation of my improved cutter and punch. Upon the screw-threaded end 9 of the rod 8 I provide a cap 21, and upon the lower screw-threaded end-1O of this red I provide a suitable cutter pointor blade 22.
The lower horizontal arm 23, which rests upon the upper face of the anvil 1, is provided with an aperture 24, which is in vertical alinement with the cutter-rod, and communicating with this vertical aperture 24: is a transverse aperture 25, in part of which is V placed a screw-bolt 26, this bolt being em ployed to secure the shank 27 of a suitable cutter-blade 28,this construction being clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
"he above description applies to my invention when the same is used as a cutter which is particularly adapted to be used for severing blunt edges from mining-bits and the like, and when it is desired to use the same as such the blunt edges of the bits are placed upon the cutter-blade 28, and the cap 21, carried by the rod 8, is struck with a suitable hammer, thus forcing the rod 8, downwardly until the cutter point or blade 22 severs the blunt edge from the bit, the return movement of the rod 8 being facilitated by means of the spiral spring but in case the cutter point or blade should become fastened or impinged in a bit or piece of material which is being cut I have provided the spanner 16, which, as before stated, is pivoted in the upper arm of the frame, and upon the point or blade becoming engaged in a piece of material the outer end of the spanner is adapted to be struck with a hammer, whereby the spanner 16 will be forced upwardly, raising the rod 8 to its normal position, the spanner having a suitable hole or slot formed in its end to allow for the movement of said rod 8.
p In Figs. 4 to 8, inclusive, 1 have illustrated my invention when the same is to be used as a punch, and when so used attachments are secured to the lower arm 23 of the frame this arm having been provided with an upwardly -extending lug 29, having a screwthreaded aperture formed therein, said aperture being drilled parallel to the horizontal arm 23, and in alinement with' said aperture I drill a similar aperture 31 in the vertical portion 32 of the S-shaped frame. \Vhen it is desired to use the device as a punch, the cutter-blade 28,shank 27, and screw-bolt 26 are removed from the horizontal arm 23, and a U-shaped die 33 is placed upon the horizontal arm 23, this die having its downwardlyextending portions 34 35 provided with screwthreaded apertures 36 37. The material nearer the screw-threaded apertures 36 and upon the outer side of the downwardly-eXtending portion 34 is cut away, forming a recess 38, and in the screw-threaded apertures 36 and 37 is secured the screw-bolt 39, said bolt carrying a head which is pocketed by the recess 38. This screw-bolt 39 passes through the screw-threaded aperture 25 of thehorizontal arm 23, and by this means the U-shaped die can be laterally adjusted upon the arm 23. This die is provided upon its upper face with suitable-shaped recesses 40, and the upper face of the die is graduated, as indicated by the reference-numeral 41. In order to secure a piece of material in position upon the die to be punched, I employ the grippingjaws 42 42, which are clearly illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawings. These gripping-jaws carry outwardlyextending flanges 43 43 upon their upper inner edges,
and the outer ends of said jaws are provided with T-shaped slots 44 44, and in said slots are adapted to be placed the heads 45 45 of the screw-threaded bolts 46 47, the end of the bolt 46 being secured in the screw-tlu'eaded aperture 2300f the lug 29, carried by the hori- Zontal arm 23, and the end of the screw-threaded bolt 47 is adapted to be engaged in the screw-threaded aperture 31 of the vertical portion 32 of the S-shapcd frame. Upon the outwardly-extending flanges 43 of the grip1')ing jaws I provide the indication-marks 48 48, whereby either one of the recesses 40 of the die 33 may be alined with these marks to locate said recess in vertical alinemcnt with the punch. The die having been placed in position upon the horizontal arm 23 and it is desired to use the same as a punch, the cutter point or blade 22 is removed from the rod 8, and a suitable punch corresponding to the recesses of the die is placed upon the screwthreaded end 10 of the rod 8, when the tool is ready for use as a punch, the parts of the tool between the upper arm 5 and the arm 12 remaining the same and being manipulated similar to the operation in which they were used as a cutter.
While I have herein shown only one die having suitable-shaped recesses formed therein, it will be observed that I may use dies having other recesses in than those shown and that other changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
hat I claim is 1. In a swaging-tool, the combination of a substantially S-shaped frame, a vertical reciprocatory rod mounted in said frame, a tool detachably secured on said rod, a coacting tool detachably secured on the frame, means for adjusting said tool to aline the same with a tool carried by the rod, means for normally holding said rod in an elevated position, and a spanner pivotally hung in one arm of the S-shaped frame and engaging the said rod, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a swaging-tool, the combination with a substantially S-shaped frame, having a depending end for engagement in the support, avertically-reciprocatoryrod mounted in said frame, a tooldetachably secured to said rod, means normally serving to hold the rod in the elevated position and acting to return the rod to its elevated position after each depression thereof, supplemental means carried by the frame and engaging the rod for returning the same to its elevated position, and a coacti n g tool detachably mounted in the lower leg of the S-shaped frame, substantially as described.
