FIRE-KINDLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,388, dated A gust 23, 1904:.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. Lorsrmn, of
Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Eire-Kindlers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-letters marked thereon.
My invention has for its object to provide a device for kindlingfires adapted to be used in the fire-box of a steam fire-engine or the firepot of a stove or the fire-box of a steam-boiler or similar place and which maybe positioned when the kindling material is laid and adapted to readily ignite the latter at such a time as may be desired by pulling a cord.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements in construction and combination of parts, all as will be more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims.
The principal object of my invention is to produce a' fire-kindler that can be carried and handled with perfect safety, but which when ignited will burn a large and intense flame instantly.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fire-kindler constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view to show the interior arrangement of parts and illustrating the operation of the devlce. v

A fire-kindler constructed in accordance with my invention consists of a suitable receptacle to contain an inflammable material,
kindling material may be thoroughly ignited and burn freely, I provide an-air space or draft-hole A in center of receptacle B, so that when the flame emitted will have a perfect combustion the device being located in the center of the kindling material will cause the latter to be thoroughly ignited.
To adapt the kindling device to be readily operated when desired afterthe kindling material has been laid and to start the fire, I provide a small friction-operated igniting-cap E to ignite material C. To operate or ignite cap E, Ihave provided-a twisted wire E, which is embedded in the material of cap E with a loop at one end for attaching'cord D. Wire F is twisted tight at the loop end and loose at the other to insure friction and ignition when drawn through cap E by cord D. Cap E being embedded in the inflammable material C insures ignition to'material O. I provide'a cord D, connected with loop in wire F and ending'outside of receptacle B, for safety against accidental discharge in handling.
In illustrating the operation of my invention I show a second cord G of suflicient length to extend through the fire-door, where it may be conveniently pulled to operate the ignitingcap E. In laying the kindling material preparatory to produce a quick and intense fire, such as is required in a fire-engine, the kindling device is located at the center of the grate with the cords 'D and G connected, the shavings, eXcelsior, and other light kindling material are placed around it,- and the cord G drawn through the door and tied to a convenient place in which it will be readily accessible.
The inflammable material C which I employ in the receptacle B may be of any suitable substance which is readily ignited;- butI preferably employ, a firework composition con,- sisting of a plastic form of meal powder, sulfur, and other agents mixed with gum-arabic' and alcohol, which will cause it to burn less slowly and prevent its explosion. The inflammable material C hardens when. dry and will not break or crumble in handling, being protected in receptacle B.
A fire-kindler constructed in accordance with my invention is simple and is easily constructed, and by making the receptacle of light wood or paper or other combustible substance I and coated with rosin it is consumed quickly by the fire. By making the receptacle in this form a draft-flue is formed in the tire-box, and the air being allowed a comparatively free passage upwardly increases the draft, which assists in the combustion of the material therein when the lire is first started, all substantially as set forth.
1 claim as my invention- 1. A fire-kindler having a circular-formed receptacle of combustible material with space for holding a solid inflammable material and a friction igniting-cap, the cap embedded in the inflammable material.
2. A fire-kindler having a circular-formed receptacle of combustible material with space for holding a solid inflammable material and friction igniting-cap with safety-cord extending through and outside of receptacle.
3. In a fire-kindler to be embedded in the kindling material, the combination with a circular-formed receptacle of combustible material with space for holding a solid inflammable material and friction igniting-cap with safety-cord extending through and outside of receptacle and connected with a cord of sullicient length to pass to the exterior of the liredoor for operating.
4:. in a lire-kindler, the combination with a receptacle of combustible material with space for holding an inflammable material and a friction ignitingcap operated by a twisted wire and cord from exterior of lire-box.
