To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KASPAR BRUHIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Torches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to torches as an ar-` ticle of manufacture wherein an inclosing container operates in conjunction with absorbent re-proof material wound upon a suitable lire-proof handle; and the objects of my invention are- First, to provide improved means for constructing a cheap, efficient fire-proof torch of simple construction;
Second, to provide a simple, cheap and eEective container to inclose the torch and saturate the absorbent material thereon with liquid fuel; and Y Third, to provide a simple, cheap and fireproof device which may be utilized for lighting fires in stoves, camp fires in a brisk wind, providing light and other similar uses without danger of explosion.
I accomplish these several objects by means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specilication, wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawings, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved torch with the container, shown in section, applied thereto; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line X-X of Fig. 1 in the direction indicated by the arrows.
It is sometimes extremely diiiicult, if not impossible, to light a camp re in a brisk wind as matches are easily and quickly eX- tinguished before a blaze can be produced ysufficient to ignite the fuel for the fire.
I propose to provide a cheap, simple and effective fire-proof means for producing a blaze not easily extinguished, from which fire fuel may be ignited and which may be described as follows:
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l is used to designate a suitable lire-proof handle formed preferably of twisted wire, the open or free end of which, meaning the end of the handle where the ends of the wire terminate, is provided with a pair of inner and outer washers 2 and 3 respectively, spaced apart on the handle l, the inner washer2being of larger diameter than the outer washer '3, the purpose of which will hereinafter be vtween the washers 2 and 3, the end 6 of the said strand 4 being extended through the aperture of the washer 3 and the Yfree end of lthe wire comprising the handle 1 as disclosed in Fig. l of the drawings.
The end of the strand 4 is projected or 4extended through the aperture of the washer `8 and the ends of the wire comprising the handle 1 in order to retain the said strand 4 upon the handle 1 and thereby prevent said strand from becoming inadvertently unwound or detached from the said handle l. A suitable cylindrical liquid fuel container 7 is arranged tocontain any suitable liquid fuel, such as gasolene, kerosene or the like, and to entirely inclose the strand 4 or torch Iportion of the handle l.
The container 7 is provided with a contracted neck 8 having an annular shoulder 'or abutment 9 to engage the innermost `washer 2.
The torch end ofthe handle l is inserted within the container 7 which may contain any suitable liquid fuel, until the shoulder 9 engages and retains the inner washer 2 of larger diameter. A portion of the wound strand 4 engages the contracted neck 8 of the container 7 and thereby tends to serve as a cork or stopper to prevent egress of the liquid fuel from the container 7 when the same is inverted or lying horizontally.
The wound strand 4 of absorbent reproof material will readily absorb and thereby become saturated with the liquid fuel within the container. j
To start a re within a stove without exposing the operator to the danger of eX- plosion, the torch is withdrawn from the container l and lighted by a match or any other suitable method. The torch is then held under the grate until the fuel becomes ignited. The torch is designed to absorb suflicient fuel to ignite any ordinary fire fuel, such as wood or the like.
After the fuel within the stove or camp ire has become ignited, the torch is extinguished by inserting the same into the container 7 which prevents the supply of oxygen necessary to combustion.
The container 7 also serves as a means whereby the torch may be prevented from comino into contact with and soiling adjacent objects.
The entire device provides a cheap, fireproof and non-explosive device for lighting fires and providing light when other lighting mechanisms are temporarily unavailable.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A torch comprising a handle formed of twisted wire; a pair of washers spaced apart on one end of the handle; and a fireproof absorbent material wound upon the handle and between the washers.
A torch comprising a handle formed of twisted wire; a pair of washers spaced apart near one end of the handle; a fire-proof absorbent material wound upon the handle and between the washers; and means for inclosing the washers and absorbent material and adapted to contain a liquid fuel.
3. A torch comprising a handle formed of twisted wire; a pair of inner and outer washers spaced apart on one end of the handle; a lire-proof absorbent material wound upon the handle and between the washers; and a liquid fuel container to engage the inner washer and to inclose the fireproof absorbent material whereby said absorbent material may be saturated with liquid fuel from the container.
et. A torch comprising a handle formed of twisted wire; a pair of washers spaced apart on one end of the handle; and a twisted strand of absorbent asbestos wound upon t-he handle between the washers.
5. A torch comprising a handle formed of twisted wire; a pair of washers spaced apart on one end of the handle; a twisted strand of absorbent asbestos wound upon the handle between the washers and having the end of said strand extended between the ends of the twisted wire and the aperture within the washer whereby said strand may be prevented from leaving the handle; and a liquid fuel container t@ tightly engage the innermost washer and inclose the absorbent asbestos strand whereby said strand may become saturated with liquid fuel within the container.
G. A torch comprising a handle formed of twisted wire; a pair of washers spaced apart near the ope-n end of the handle; the innermost washer being of larger diameter than the outermost washer; a twisted strand of absorbent asbestos wound around the handle between the washers and having the ends thereof extended through the aperture of the outermost washer and between the ends cf the wire of which the handle is formed; and a liquid fuel container to inclose the strand of absorbent asbestos and having an annular shoulder to engage the innermost washer whereby liquid fuel may be retained within the container and absorbed by the strand of absorbent asbestos.
