PATENT OFFICE.
GARDINER INGLIS, OF AIRDRIE, SCOTLAND.
FIRE-TUBE STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,816, dated August 16, 1904.
Application filed February 17, 1904. Serial No. 193,980. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
No. 5,939, dated the 14th day of March, 1903,
and in Germany, No. I. 7,332, dated the 1st of May, 1903.
This invention has reference to improvements in fire-tube steam-boilers of the marine and like type, and is particularly suitable where forced or induced draft is used, and
has essentially for its objects to give the followingadvantages: first, improved combustion of furnace-gases and fuel; second, delivery of the gases from the furnaces to the firetubes of boiler at a uniform temperature; third, when working with forced or induced draft to prevent the gases when they reach the tubes of being at such a temperature as would injure or'cause damage to the tube ends; fourth, to prevent clinker or other partially-burned fuel from being forced into the tubes and onto the tube-plate in such a manner as would cause serious obstruction; fifth, to prevent cold air from reaching the tubeplate when the furnace-doors are open while charging the furnaces with fuel, and, sixth, to reduce the terminal temperature of the gases as they come to the uptake.
My improvements essentially consist in com-. bining with the ordinaryforward or primary furnace-fines and back combustion-chamber of boiler a return or secondary combustionflue or wide chamber, so that the gaseous products of combustion shall be brought to a further chamber located at the front end of boiler and then pass through the fire-tubes to the uptake, the fire-tubes being secured at their ends to and carried by the front and back end plates of boiler.
In order that my said invention and the manner of carrying same into practice maybe properly understood, I have hereunto appended three sheets of explanatory drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a steam-boiler of the marine type, showing the application of my improvements thereto, while Figs. 2 and 3 are end views corresponding to Fig. 1 and as taken near the front and rear ends, respectively, of boiler.
Referring to the drawings, Within the shel A of the steam-boiler there would be fitted at its lower part any desired number of corrugated or other flues B, carrying the fire-grates G. The usual combustion-chamber D would be fitted at the rear part of boiler.
By my improvements I lead a large flue or wide chamberE from the upper part of the combustion-chamber D to the front end of shell A of boiler and communicating with a chamber or casing F, located at the front of boiler. This casing F would preferably be lined with fire-brick F','but may have instead a water-jacket chamber and be fitted with any ordinary-formed door or doors. The firetubes G would extend from this chamber F to the uptake H and be secured at their ends to the front and back end plates A A respectively, of shell A of boiler.
By this improved construction of steamboiler the gases from the furnaces C would pass through the primary flues B in what may be termed the lower Zone of the boiler into the combustion-chamber D, from whence the combined gases would pass through the secondary combustion flue or chamber E to the front chamber F and from thence through the fire-tubes G to the uptake H in what may be termed the second zone of the furnace, while the upper steam-space of the boiler provided with the stay-rods I maybe termed the upper zone.
I claim as my invention 1. A steam-boiler comprising a shell, end plates therefor, a flue open at one end, a combustion-chamber at right angles thereto, both secured in an end plate, a second single flue of large cross-section substantially parallel with the first flue, a casing at one end of the boiler into which said second flue opens, a number of fire-tubes secured in the end plates and open at one end to said casing.
