FEED THOUGH.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 20, 1904.
[NVENTOR Patented August 16, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HODGENS, OF SAVANNAH, MISSOURI.
FEED-THOUGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,643, dated August 16, 1904.
Application filed April 20, 1904.
T0 (til whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES HODGENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Andrew and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Troughs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in feeding-troughs for animals; and the object of the invention is to produce a device of this character which is so constructed as to form reversible troughs, adapting the same as a double trough for hogs or a single trough for cattle.-
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved trough. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view showing the trough reversed.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a suitable framework, which may be of any desired construction, and B is a shaft which is journaled in the cross-pieces A of the frame and has a crank D secured to the end thereof.
E E designate two troughs which are formed side by side and divided each into two compartments by means of the central partitions F. lntermediate said two troughs upon opposite sides is a single trough K, the side walls of which comprise the inner walls of said troughs E and form a single trough. The ends of the trough are secured to and rotate with said shaft, and M designates a tapering strip which is fastened along the ridge dividing the two series of troughs E, and eyes Serial No. 204,070. (No model.)
Q are provided upon said strip, which are adapted to be engaged by the hooked ends of the wire R,which is bent at one end into an eye and held over a pin R, mounted upon a cross-piece co of said frame. By the provision of said wire having a hooked end it will be seen that the double troughs side by side may be held in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and prevented from being reversed. When it is desired to reverse the trough, the hooks are detached from said eyes and the trough thrown in the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings and may be held in such position by means of the hooks T, carried by the cross-pieces of the frame engaging eyes N on the end pieces of the trough.
Upon reference to the drawings it will be seen that the longitudinal strips A of the frame are positioned so that they will come opposite the upper outer edges of the double troughs when the latter are adjusted for use and being low down afford means for hogs to have ready access to the trough; but when the trough is reversed, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, access may be had to the same over the top longitudinal strips J of the frame, thus adapting the trough for convenient use of larger animals than hogs.
By the provision of an apparatus as illustrated and described it will be observed that a convenient apparatus is provided whereby double troughs may be utilized for feeding hogs or a single trough upon the opposite side for the feeding of horses or other live stock and a self-cleaning trough is provided, the contents being allowed to fall by gravity as the trough is reversed.
- Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a frame, a shaft journaled therein, a trough mounted upon said shaft provided with two compartments, side by side, and a third compartment on the reverse side of the trough, as set forth.
2. In combination with aframe, ashaftjour naled therein, a reversible trough having two compartments, side by side, and a third compartment on the reverse side thereof inter mediate said compartments which are positioned side by side, and means for holding the trough in position, as set forth.
3. In combination with a frame,a shaft journaled in the end pieces thereof, a trough having two compartments, side by side, and a third compartmenton the reverse side, hooks carried by the frame and eyes mounted upon the trough and adapted to be engaged by said hooks to hold the same in an adjusted position, as set forth.
4. In combination with a frame, a shaft journaled in the end pieces thereof, a crank secured to said shaft, a trough having two compartments, side by side, and a third compartment on the reverse side intermediate said two compartments, a strip intermediate said compartments, side by side, an eye carried by said strip, a Wire having a hooked end carried by the frame and engaging said eye, and longitudinal strips of the frame positioned adjacent to the outer marginal edges of said compartments which are positioned side by side, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES HODGENS. Witnesses:
