Description

No. 767,230. PATENTED AUG. 9, 1904.
A. W. EORNBERGER.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAB.. 29, 1904. HO MODEL.
UNITED STATES l Patented August 9, 1904.
PATENT @EEicE WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,230, dated August 9, 1904.
Application filed March 29, 1904. Serial No. 200,545. (No model-1 To all 1071/0771/ it 77u07/ concern:
Be it lgnown that I, ABNER VILsoN HORN- BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milton,-in the county or' Northumberland and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in lNrenches, or' which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and which, although applicable as in the ordinary use of wrenches for`turning a nut, is also equally effective-as, for instance, where this would not otherwise be possible because oi' the lack of space or presence of obstructions to the required manipulation or actuation of the wrench.
It is the object of the invention to provide such improvements as will enable the jaw to be moved irrespective of the handle, so that the nut may be securely engaged and the jaw then held in its engaged position while the handle is moved to turn up and tighten the nut or loosen the same.
To these ends the invention consists in the various constructions and combination of parts, the peculiarities and distinguishing characters of which when applied to a wrench will be hereinafter more specifically described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specification, Figure l is a side elevation showing how the wrench is held and operated by the hand ot" the user. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing how the parts cooperate with eachother in use. Figs. 3 to 6, inclusive, show the parts in diiferent positions.
In the drawings, l designates the handle, which may be ot' any suitable form and size and which is slotted at its upper end, so that the lthumb-piece 2 may be pivoted therein at' its lower end and so, also, that jaw 3 may be pivoted in the upper end, with thecentral part of the ratchet slide-piece or dog 4 operating in the slot between the ratchet-teeth 6 on the lower side of the jaw 3 and the upper end of the thumb-actuated piece or detent 2, said dog having lateral guide-flanges 4u at its ends contacting or engaging with opposite surfaces or edges of the handle l to hold said dog as against endwise displacement.
The lower side or edge of the nut-engaging jaw 3 is constructed on the are of a circle, and
the lower edge or side thereof has ratchetteeth 6 formed' thereon, and the adjacent upper edge oi' the slide has corresponding teeth 7 made on said part, while a tooth or teeth 3 are formed on the inner upper corner of the pivoted thumb-piece 2 and adapted to engage a notch 9, formed in the projecting end of the ratchet slide-piece 4.
The pin l0, pivoting the nut-engaging jaw 3 in the slot in the upper end of the handle, may be a screw, with its head countersunl in one side and screwed into the other, as shown, and the pivot-hole maybe somewhat larger than the pin to allow the jaw 3 to move freely about on its pin.
Then it is desired to use the device as a straight wrench, the parts will be adjusted as shown in Figs. l and 2, when the 3teeth of the sliding piece will engage the ratchet-teeth on the lower edge of the jaw and the thumb-piece below will hold the parts in position.
Then it is wished to turn the jaw to one side at a slight angle to the handle after the jaw is engaged with the nut, the teeth of the slide-piece will be engaged with those of the jaw, and the tooth 3 of the thumb-piece may be engaged with the notch 9, formed on the projecting end of the'slide-piece,and the latter held in place by slight pressure on the thumbpiece, as shown in Fig. 3, or the thumb-piece may be drawn down out of the way altogether, so that the jaw may extend at a right angle to the handle, as seen at Fig. 4. Vhen it is desired to turn the jaw in the opposite direction at a partial angle to the handle, the jawholding slide-piece may hold the jaw locked in place by the thumb-piece, as shown in Fig. 5, or the thumb-piece may be drawn down, with its tooth 3 out of engagement with the notch in the ratchet-slide, and the jaw 3 will then extend at a right angle and the Wrench so operated, as shown in Fig'. 6.
A larger or smaller jaw may be pivoted on the handle, as will be readily understood.
It will also be understood that other changes and arrangements may be made with my invention without departing from the nature or spirit thereof.
That l claim as my invention is- 1. A wrench having an axially-movable jaw, a slide or dog adapted to engage said jaw, and
IOO
all
an axially-movable detent'adapted to engage l teeth or notch es, and a detent also pivoted in said slide either endwise or laterally.
2. A wrench having an axially-movable Jaw,
a slide or dog adapted to eng'age said jaw, and
an axially-movable detent adapted to engag'e said slide diagonally, endwise or laterally.
3. A wrench having' an axiallyanovable jaw, a slide or dog', said jaw and dog having intermeshing' ratchet-surfaces.and a detent adapted to engage said slide or dog' diagonally, end- Wise or laterally.
4. A Wrench having' a pivoted nut or object engaging' jaw, a sliding dog', said jaw and dog having' intergeared ratchet teeth or notches, and a detent having a tooth at a corner edge engaging and holding said dog n position.
A Wrench having a pivoted nut or object engaging jaw, having' a notched or ratchet surface, a sliding dog' having a corresponding surface engaging' the ratchet-surface of said jaw, and a notch at its rear corner edge, and a detent having a tooth at a corresponding edge engaging said notch.
6. A Wrench having a single handle, a nut or object engaging jaw pivoted in one end of said handle, a sliding' dog also arranged in the latter and having a notch in its corner edge, said jaw and dog having intergeared ratchet said handle and having at a corner edg'c a tooth engaging said notch.
7. A Wrench having' a handle. a nut or ohject engaging' jaw centrally pivoted in one end of said handle, a dog arranged to slide in said handle and having' lateral guide-fianges eng'aging the opposite edg'es of said handle, said jaw and dog having intergeared ratchet-surfaces, and a detent also pivoted in said handle and having' a tooth engaging' a notch in a corner edge of said dog'.
8. A Wrench having a handle provided With a centrallypivoted nut or object engaging jaw, a sliding dog having lateral guide-flanges, engaging the opposite edges of said handle, and a notch in a corner edge thereof, said jaw and dog having intergeared ratchet-surfaces, and a detent pivoted in said handle and having at a corner edge a tooth engaging said notch, also a thumb or finger piece.
In testimony whereof I have signed rny name to this specification in the presence of two suhscribing, Witnesses.
