Bc it known that I, HOWARD T. HALLOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hallowell, Montgomery county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Shaft-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a novel construction of shaft-hanger; and it consists in improvements on prior patents granted to me and prior patents with which I am familiar in that I employ a construction of hanger-legs intermediate brace and yoke, which are assembled in such a manner that the whole forms a strong and durable structure, forming a stiffening 0r strengthening means, said legs being' in the form of a channel-beam.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a hanger embodying' my invention. Fig. 2 represents an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view on line fr a", Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view with a modified form of the channel-beam construction.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding' parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a a hanger, the same comprising the legs 2, each leg being constructed substantially the same and consisting of a channel-shaped member, the edges of which extend at an angle which serves to stiifen and strengthen the legs, as will be evident, said legs forming the ianges 3, which extend substantially throughout the entire length of the leg.
It will be understood that I preferably form the legs 2 of rectilinear form, with the flanges extending outwardly therefrom, as best understood from Fig. 3, although I may, if desired, have the flanges extending inwardly, as under'- stood from Fig. 4.
The lower portions of the hanger-legs are adapted to be embraced by a yoke 4, which is held in place by the bolts or other fastening devices 5, whereby it will be seen that by the removal of one of these bolts the yoke can be swung downwardly into the position seen in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thereby acting as a hinge. The upper portion of the legs iiare outwardly, while the upper extremity of each leg is provided with the feet 6, which are secured in position in any suitable manner.
The intermediate brace 7 consists of the plates 8 and 9, the edges of which have the iianges 10 and are secured to the legs by the rivets or other fastening' devices 11. Passing through the brace and supported thereby is the adjusting' device for the upper part 12 of the journal-box, said adjusting device consisting of a screw or threaded pin 13, having the head 14 on the upper end thereof for engagement with suitable operating means, while a suitable nut 15 rests on the brace 7, and an additional nut 16 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1) is situated between the plates 8 and 9. Passing through the yoke 4 is a threaded pin or screw 17, which serves as the adjusting device for the lower part 18 of the journal-box.
In Fig. 4 the flanges are shown extending inwardly, which while not a preferred form is within my invention.
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which may come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited to the exact construction herein shown and described.
While I have shown a plate 23 connecting the upper portions of the legs 2 and while I consider it necessary in most instances to employ this plate, it may be that in some cases I may omit the same., and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited to this plate. While I have shown the two vertical adjusting devices located between the plates of the brace and both adapted to be adjusted laterally, I-may in many cases connect the adjustingldevices to iit in the brace and yoke, so that no lateral movement may be had. While I have shown the small horizontal adjusting devices secured in the legs, I do not wish to employ these adjusting means in every instance.
yHaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A Hanged and channeled shcetmetal hanger-leg narrowed in its substantially Hat channel portion substantially throughout its length.
2. A sheet-metal shaft-hanger leg comprising a longitudinally-narrowed body portion and side flanges extending' at a substantially uniform angle to the body throughout substantially the length of the leg.
3. A shaft-hanger comprising channeled sheet-metal legs having each a substantially lat body portion narrowed longitudinally and side flanges extending therefrom throughout substantially the length of the leg, a brace between the legs intermediate their ends and a yoke uniting the ends of the legs.
4. A shaft -hanger comprising channeled sheet-metal legs having substantially Hat body portions narrowed longitudinally, and side anges extending substantially the length of the leg, there being a foot upon one end ot' each of said legs, a yoke uniting the other ends of said. legs, and a brace intermediate the ends of the legs and secured to them.
