ppileatiea led October 3,1903. No. 175,630. 13e nudeln To Iall urtont it may concern.:
Be. it known that. l, Gannon E."Nnn'nsarn ark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and l original Improvement in Electrical Switch Boxes or Cases; and l do hereby declare the 'following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art-to which it appcrtains tomake and use the same, reference being had to. the accompanying drawings, and to figures f reference marked' thereon, .which 'forma part of this specification.
The'objects of lthis invention are to reduce the cost of the switch-box, te reduce the labor involvedin fastening the. flexible conduit to the said switch-box, to dispense with certainI nipples and other parts heretofore necessary in making connections, to-facilitate the assemblage of'purts, and to secure other advan- .l tages and results. some of which will be herenfinafter referred to m connection with the de- .scription of the working parts.
The invention consists in the improved eleclFigure 1 is a front elevation of my improve device. Fig. 2 is a section of the same, taken at line a', Fig. 1. of the device, and Fi 4 is a det-uil end view taken at the rear of t 1e box.
In said drawings, 10 indicates the body of the box or case, which is provided at its forward side and at its opposite ends with lateral Zianges 11, by means of which the box may he screwed or otherwise fastened to the iron girdcrs, joists, beams.' or other parts of-the structure bein'g supplied with electric wires.
-The forward side of said box is open, as shown nt 12`in Figs. 1.and2, to permit the insertion of the operators hands or the tools employed inmaking connections, said open end being ordinarily closed by the switch plate or cover operation, as hereinafter described.
Fig. 8 is a rear elevation` (not shown) in any-ordinary manner. The rear of said body 10 is also open, and in the openingr thereof is inserted a movable Arear p ate 14, which fits said opening neatly, so as to prevent any .material lateral play whAen in t or near the rear or back part of the body 10. at' opposite ends thereof, are also formed conduit-openings 15, (shown more clearly in Figs.
2 and 4,) through which the conduits 16 are 6e inserted at their extremities. Said conduits 16 are firmly held to 4said box-bodylO by screwing forward the movable rear plate 14, which serves as a clamp.
The clamping operation is effected by means #35 f clamping-screws 17 which have their bearings in fianges 18, cast integral with the end walls of said box-body. .The slotted ends of said clamping-screws face toward the open forward end 12 of the box-body, so that they 7 may be readily turned, by means of a screwdriver or otherwise, from the open front of the box. The said screws extend rearward andenter threaded bearings within the rear plate 14, so that when said screws are turned 'the said rear plate 14 is moved either forwardly 'or rearwardly to clamp or release the conduit. llwgrefer to have one end of the said boxy provided with a single conduit opening and the opposite end rovided with a plural- 8 ity of openings, as in icated more clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. When the plurality of openings are employed at one end of the box, I prefer to arrange at that end a single screw. arranged between said openings, as indicated 35 in Figs. 1`and '8, whereby by turuingthc said single `screw the two conduits are clamped simultaneously. By the construction thus described I am enabled, when it is found deairuble'to dose( to clump or release the con- 9 l duits at one en of the box without clamping the conduits at the op )osito end, the latter beingfree to be manipu ated after lthe opposite conduits have been tinally stationed in position. j
'The rear plate 14 'is provided at its opposite ends with coneavo-eonvex formations 19, the eoncavitiesj of whieh'plid op the inner or fon ward side of the rear {bte-'and cor J f with the sad openingot' slion'ninFigA. i l`lxe'soczkfe-ta formed byisaid more-iirxiilyandpfithout damaging the flexi' concavities thus serve to hold the conduits hie walls of the conduit`.'""""l`he-inner walls of the said sockets are also curved toward.' the front'at 20, and thus tend to give a.
