Be it known that l, GEORGE AGOBIAN, a subject of the Sultan of Turkey, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers, of
which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved can-opener which is simple in construction, strong, durable, and can be adjusted to open cans of various diameters and heights. Y
In the accompanying drawings, in whichlike letters of reference indicate like parts in all the iigures, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my improved can-opener. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, parts being' broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale.
The base A is preferably made circular and is provided with a central hub B, through which a spindle O projects from a disk-shaped chuck-plate D, in which three jaws E are mounted to slide in radial slots F of said plate. The jaws E are stepped, as shown, so as to adapt them to hold cans H of various diameters, and each jaw is provided on its under side with a series of teeth J, which can engage a series of spiral teeth K in a disk-shaped plate L, directly below the chuck-plate and having' a central hub L', which rests on the hub B, so that this plate L is adapted to turn around the spindle C below the chuck-plate D. On the under side of the plate L an annular rack M is formed, which is engaged by a pinion N on one end of a shaft N, mounted to turn on a bracket N2 of the base-plate, which shaft is provided at its outer end with a crankhandle N3. The chuck-plate is provided with a iiange a, in which teeth a are formed. A latch O is pivotally mounted on a bracket O of the base-plate, one end O2 of said latch being adapted to engage the teeth a of the circular rack formed on the rim of the chuck-plate. A spring O;g normally holds this latch out of engagement with the teeth a. At the rear slide Q is mounted on said standard to move upl and down and also in the direction from front to rear, the opening in the slide being ofsuiliicient size to permit of said movement from front to rear. On the inner surface of the front transverse piece of the slide a tooth Q is formed, which can engage with the teeth P on the standard, and a spring Q2, attached to the slide and resting against the rear edge of the standard, normally keeps this tooth Q in engagement with the teeth P' of the standard. Two bars R are mounted to slide in horizontal grooves in the outer surfaces of the slide Q, in the direction from front to rear, and to the front ends of the same a segmental guide R/ is attached. A blade S is mounted to move up and down directly in front of this guide and is pressed upward by a spring S. A handle-lever T, resting on the upper end of the blade-plunger, is pivoted to an upwardlyextending bracket T of the bars R and serves for forcing down the blade. Two curved bracerods YV are attached to the upper end of the standard P, and their lower curved ends are bolted or riveted to the sides of the base-frame.
The operation is as follows: The can H is placed upon the chuck-plate and the latch O engaged with one of the teeth a of the chuckplate, so as to lock the same, and then the handle N3 is turned, whereby the jaws E are moved radially toward the center until they clamp and hold the bottom of the can. Then the latch O is released. The sliding bars l, with the slide Q, are moved to the top of the can, and, then the bars R are pulled to the front until the guide R rests against the side of the can, and by means of the lever T the blade S is forced down into the top of the can. The crank-handle N3 is then turned, whereby the plate L andwith it the chuck-plate J are rotated, as is also the can held on the chuckplate, and thus the blade S makes a circular cut on the top of the can. The lever T is then released and the bars R pushed back and away from the can, and then the chuck-plate is locked in place by engaging the latch O with .one of the teeth of the chuck-plate, and the crank-handle R is turned in reverse order, so as to move the jaws E away from the can. According to the diameter of the can,

it is placed upon the chuck-plate or upon the lowest or second offset of the jaws E, and, likewise according to the height of the can, the slide Q, is raised or lowered after pulling it toward the front, so as to disengagev its tooth Q from a tooth P' of the standard P, and then the bars R are pulled forward until the guide R rests against the can.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj l. In a can-opener, the combination with a base, of a disk-shaped plate mounted to turn on said base, a crank-shaft, means for engaging said crank shaft with the disk-shaped plate, a chuck-plate above the disk-shaped plate, means for locking the chuck-plate in place, radially-movable jaws in thechuckplate, means for 'operating the jaws in the chuck-plate from said disk-shaped plate, a standard, a vertically-movable slide on said standard, transversely-sliding bars on said slide, a blade mounted on said bars and means y .for depressing the blade, substantially as set forth.
2. In a can-opener, the combination with a base-plate having a hub, of a disk-shaped plate provided with a hub resting on the hub of the base-plate, a rack on the under side of said disk-shaped plate, a pinion engaging said rack, a shaft on which said pinion is mounted, a handle on said shaft, a chuck-plate having a spindle passing through the hub of the disk-shaped plate and the hub on the base-plate, teeth on the rim of said chuck-plate, a latch for engaging said teeth, radially-sliding jaws in the chuck-plate, means for moving said jaws radially from the disk-shaped plate, a standard on the base-plate, a vertically and laterally adjustable knife, supported on said standards, and means for forcing down the knife, substantially as set forth.
3. In a can-opener, the combination with a rotative chuck-plate, and means for rotating said plate, of radially-movable jaws on said plate and means for operating said jaws, a toothed standard, a slide mounted to move vertically on said standard, and having a tooth for engaging the teeth on the standard, and which slide can also be moved transversely on the standard, a spring secured to said slide and resting against the standard, bars guided to slide in said slide, a guide on the one end of said bars, a vertically-movable blade adjacent to said guide and means for forcing down the blade, substantially as set forth.
