CHARLES W. SARGENT, OF MURRAY, IDAHO.
DRILL-CHUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,733, dated August 2, 1904.
Application filed June 8, 1903- To (all 1117mm it may concern/.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES IV. SARGENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Murray, in the county of Shoshone and State of Idaho, have invented a new and Improved Drill-Chuck, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention relates, more definitely stated, to chucks for rock-drills; and it consists in a chuck of the character stated having new and improved means for securing the bit in the chuck-socket, which means will hereinafter be fully described, and the novel features pointed out in the subjoined claim.
\Yhile my invention is specially designed and intended for securing in the chuck-socket drills of any type, it is equally adapted to toolhandles in general, having a socket for receiving the shank end of any tool adapted thereto.
In order to enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe it in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line m :1: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3/ I of Fig. 1.
In the preferred form of my invention I employ a chuck-head or body portion A,which may be understood to be an enlargement at the lower end of the exteriorly-projecting portion of the piston-rod of a steam or compressed-air rock-d rill of the usual or any preferred type. The head portion A is formed with a socket B, adapted to receive a special bushing C. The head and bushing are provided with lateral slots D, adapted to receive an elongated key D. It will be noticed that the key I) is formed with a projection I) with extended side edges 1'), which overlap the lateral slot-openingl) in thehead A. The under side of the extended edges D is curved, as shown, adapting the key for rocking movement in adjusting itself to a tapering bitshank. The outer side of the projection D on the key I) is made concave, as at I), conforming to the curved edges D and with the Serial No. 160,544. (No model.)
l rounding under side E of the lateral head extension E to the securing-bolt E.
In further carrying out my invention I form on the lower end of the chuck-head A a half round strengthening-rib A. Suitably above the lower end of the head an enlargement A is provided and through which an opening A is made adapted to receive the securing-bolt E The upper side of the enlargement A is made projecting, as at A, (see Fig. 2,) and recessed at A, (see Fig. 1,) adapted to receive and support the upper squared end portion of the securing-bolt E". It will be noticed thatthe upper enlargement on the chuckhead is made sufliciently projecting to protect the securingbolt head from engagement whereby it may be knocked off or injured during operation of the drill. In connection with the bolt E I employ a nut E, having increased thread-bearing which is provided by the tapered and projecting under side E, adapted for seating in an enlarged recess or opening at this end of the bolt-opening through the enlargement A According to my invention the bushing C is recessed, as at C, adapted for engagement with the securing-bolt E and whereby the bushing is locked in place. A similar recess U is formed on the opposite side of the bushing G, adapting it to be reversed when in use one end becomes worn or unduly enlarged.
The above description, in connection with the several views shown in the drawings, will render my invention fully understood. I would, however, call particular attention to the form of my special key, the reversible bushing, and the peculiar clamping-bolt, as also the means employed whereby the bolthead is afforded protection and bracing support.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination in a chuck having an axial socket and a lateral slot extending into the said socket, and also a transverse opening adapted to receive a clamping-bolt, of an enlargement on the chuck-head having a lateral projection, the said enlargement and projec- IO edges with curved under sides and a top concaved surface, a laterally-projecting head onthe clamping-bolt, having an under curved surface adapted to seat in the upper curved surface on the key, and a securing-nut on the said bolt, substantially as described.
CHARLES W. SARGENT.
