Description

No. 766,536. PATENTED AUG. 2, 1904. G. SHUMAN.
BED POST.
APPLIUATION FILED MAB. 9, 1903.
no MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented August 2, 1904.
GEORGE SHUMAN, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
BEDPOST- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,536, dated August 2, 1904.
Ap lication filer'. March 9, 1903. Serial No. 146,988. (No model-l To (LU 'IUIMHIZ/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SHUMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedposts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved bedpost for bed-springs adapted to be detaehably secured to the corners of the frame of a bed-spring to convert the latter into a bedstead which is exceedingly light, cheap, portable, and which may be readily knocked down or disassembled to facilitate packing and transportation; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a bedpost embodying my improvements, showing the same attached to one corner of the frame of a bed-spring. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same.
The bedpost 1 may be either of the form here shown or of any other suitable form and is preferably made of iron or other metal, but may be made of any suitable material. At a suitable distance from its upper end the bedpost is provided with a pair of laterally-extending brackets 2 3, one below the other and the former adapted to bear under one corner of the frame of a bed-spring and the latter to bear on the upper side thereof. The lower bracket 2 is provided on its upper side with a flange or lug I, adapted to engage one end of the bed-spring frame to prevent the post from turning. The upper bracket 3 is provided with a set-screw 5, adapted to clamp the post to the corner of the bed-frame. The brackets also serve as braces for the bedpost,
as will be understood. The post is provided on each side at a suitable distance from its upper end with a groove 6 to form a socket for one end of a head or foot board.
In the drawings the bed-spring frame is designated by the letter a.
It will be understood that four of my improved posts will be employed in connection with the bed-spring frame, one at each corner thereof, and that by their use an exceedingly light, cheap, simple, and portable bedstead may be improvised for use for camping, conventions, and other occasions.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I elairn'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bedpost having a lower and an upper bracket on one side thereof to receive one side of a mattress-frame between them, one of the brackets having a transverse flange t to bear against one side of the mattress-frame and prevent the post from turning, and a set-screw 5 in one of the brackets and coacting with the said flange to detachably secure the post to the mattress-frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
