Be it known that I, J ULIUs H. SCHLAELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oanton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tube-Forming Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being' had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in whicl Figure l is an end View showing' a transverse section of the mandrel and the track or way, except the housing for the skelp-removing mechanism, which device is not illustrated. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section showing the machine broken' in cross-section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the mandrel, the folding-heads, and one of the lower fldinghead-operating cams. Fig. 4 is a perspective View showing a transverse section of the mandrel, illustrating' the pipe or skelp located thereon and the device for locking the hooked edges of the skelp together. Fig. 5 is a view showing a portion of the main power-shaft, its clutch powerwheel, and the various sprocket driving-wheels, also showing' a portion of the track or way and one of' the end sprocket-wheels anda portion of the skelpremoving driving-chain. The present invention has relation to tubeforming machines designed and calculated to provide for connecting' the previously folded or hooked edges together into a cylindrical tube, the present invention having special reference only to the folding or forming the hooked edged strip of metal into a cylinder and locking the hooked edges together; and it consists in the different parts, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanyingdrawings, l represents the mandrel-supports, which are held in fixed positions and also provide proper supports for the skelp-removing mechanism and the track or way, which parts will hereinafter be more particularly described.
The mandrel 2 is located between the supports l and is supported at either end and is formed of a length to correspond substantially with the extreme length of any desired pipe designed to be formed, reference being had to the proper operation of the various devices for forming the skelp or tube and removing the same from the mandrel after it has been brought into a cylindrical form and the hooked edges locked together.
Directly below the mandrel 2 is located the lower folding-head 3, which lower foldinghead is arranged to slide up and down in the guideways 4, said guideways being formed` in the upper ends of the standards 5,which standards are spaced a distance apart equal to the width of the lower folding-head 3, or substantially so.
The top or upper edge of the lower folding'- head 3 is provided with the concave groove 6, which concave groove is covered with a metal plate 7, which metal plate is formed to fit the concave groove 6, as illustrated in Figs. L and 5. rlhe curvature of that portion of the metal plate 7 located in the groove 6 is of course to correspond substantially with the curvature of the outer periphery of the mandrel 2.
Below the lower folding-head 3 is located the shaft 8, which shaft is journaled in proper supports 9 and upon which shaft are securely fixed any desired number of cams l0, which cams are for the purpose of imparting an upward movement to the lower folding-head 3, and thereby bring the upper concave surface of the plate 7 against the metal designed to be operated upon, which metal is located between the top of the folding-head 3 and the bottom of the mandrel 2, as best illustrated in Fig. 1.
For the purpose of reducingthe friction of the cams 10 antifriction-rollers 11 are provided, which antifriction-rollers are journaled upon shafts 12, which shafts are held in proper position by the fiange-plates 13, said Hangeplates being securely attached to the bottom or under side of the folding-head 3.
For the purpose of imparting rotary motion to the shaft 8 and the cams 10 connected thereto the sprocket-wheel 14 is provided, which sprocket-wheel is securely fixed to the shaft 8 lin any convenient and well-known manner and is driven by the drive-chain 15, said drivechain leading to and around the sprocketwheel 16, which sprocket-wheel is mounted upon the shaft 17 and upon which shaft is mounted the sprocket wheel 18, which is driven by the drive-chain 19, said drive-chain leading to the sprocket-wheel 22, upon the shaft of which is mounted the sprocket-wheel 22, and from thence leads the drive-chain 22b to the sprocket-wheel 20, located upon the main power-shaft 21, and for the purpose of bringing the drive-chains 19 and 22b out of the way the wheels 22 and 22EL are located and arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 1 and are both mounted upon the shaft 21", said shaft being journaled in suitable bearings connected to any xed object.
It will be understood that when the power-v shaft 21 is rotated the folding-head 3 will be elevated by means of the cams 10, which rotation takes place after the sheet from which the pipe is to be made is brought or placed on the top of the folding-head 3 and bridges the groove 6, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and when A the folding-head 3 is brought up it will bend the strip of metal around the bottom or under side of the mandrel and press the same between the metal plate 7 and said mandrel, this being the first operation of the folding or bending the material to produce a cylindrical pipe.
'Upon either side of thev mandrel 2 are located the shafts 23 and 24, which shafts are each provided with the sprocket-wheels 25 and 26. The shafts 23 and 24 are each journaled in proper supports 27 and 28, which supports are held in proper position by the standards 5 or their equivalents.
The shafts 23 and 24 are provided, respectively, with the slotted cranks 29 and 30, to'
which slotted cranks are adjustably connected the wrist- pins 31 and 32, to which wrist-pins are journaled the pitmans 33 and 34, which pitmans are formed in sections and the sections connected together by screw-threaded coupling-heads 35, by which arrangement the pitmans can be adjusted as to length, this being necessary for the purpose hereinafter described.
Upon the tops or upper ends of the standards 5 are located the sliding heads 36 and 37, said sliding heads being located in ways 38.
To the sliding heads are securely connected the side-folding heads 39 and 40, which sidefolding' heads are connected in any convenient and well-known manner to the pitmans 33 and 34, and of course a backward and forward movement is imparted to the folding- heads 39 and 40 by means of the pitmans 33 and 34 and their connections. y
To the folding-head 39 is connected the folding-plate 41, which folding-plate is so located that as it is moved toward the mandrel 2 after the lower folding-head has given the sheet from which the pipe is to be made the first bend it will give that side of the sheeta bend around and over the top of the mandrel.
.The folding-head 40 is brought toward the mandrel, together with its folding-,plate 42, and the folding-plate 42 comes in contact with the opposite side of the sheet from that engaged by the folding-plate 41 and bends the sheet over the top of the hooked edge and brings the hooked edges in such a position that they can be locked together, and in order that the edges of the pipe may be properly hooked together the folding-heads are so timed that the folding-plate 41, together with its folding-head, will recede in time to allow the folding-plate 42 to come over and carry with it the'upper hooked edge of the sheet past the lower hooked edge thereof, the latter being still held to the mandrel, as the receding plate 41 will not up to this time have released said lower hooked edge, and in order to properly hook the edges together the head 39 is provided with any desired number of arms or bars 43, to which arms are journaled rollers 44, which rollers are so located that they will come over the top of the hinged portion of the folding-plate 42, by which arrangement the folding-plate 42 is pressed downward by reason of the inclined edge 45 of the folding-plate 42 coming under the rollers 44, said rollers being held in a rigid position.
It will be understood that after the hooked edges of the sheet from which the pipe is to be made are locked together and the folding heads and plates withdrawn the pipe will re- IOO IOS

main upon the mandrel until removed therefrom, as hereinafter described.
For the purpose of normally holdingl the folding-plate 42 in an elevated position it is hinged to the angle-bar 46 or its equivalent and the springs 47 provided, which springs are fixed to the angle-bar 46 and are extended under the hinged folding-plate 42, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
It will be understood that the cams 10 and the cranks 29 and 30 should be so adjusted that when a uniform rotary movement is given to the shafts upon which these parts are mounted the lower folding-head 3 will be brought into action first, the folding-plate 41 second, and the folding-plate 42 last, this being done by the proper adjustment of the different parts above referred to.
1t will be understood that when the sheet from which the pipe is to be made is fed onto the lower foli'ling-head 3 the mechanism for folding' the pipe is at rest, but when the sheet has been brought into its proper position to be acted upon the clutch 8 is thrown into engagement, so as to impart rotary n10- tion to the power-shaft 21 by means of the opm'ating-lever 49, and after the various parts have performed their function to produce a cylindrical pipe the clutch is drawn out of engagement and the power-shaft 2l broug'ht to a stop, this being brought about by means of the power-wheel 50, running idle upon the shaft Q1 when the clutch is disengaged.
The clutch S may be of any ordinary construction and may consist of a friction or an interlocking' clutch, as desired.
Directly above the mandrel 2 is located the track or way 51, which track or way is supported at its ends by suitable uprights 52 or their equivalents. Upon the track or way is located a traveling carriage or head 53,which traveling carriage or head is connected to the lower member of the drive-chain 54 by means of the bar 55 or its equivalent. To the bottom or under side of the head 53 is connected the hinged push-head 56, to which push-head is vadjustably attached the push-plate or stripper 5T, which stripper is for the purpose of removing the skelp from the mandrel 2 as the carriage or head is moved along the track or way 5l. At the ends of the track or way are located the housings 58 and 59, and to the housing 58 is properly journaled and supported the shaft 59, and upon this shaft is mounted the sprocket-wheel 60, said shaft also being' provided with the pulley 61, from which pulley leads the belt 62 to the pulley 63,which pulley is fixed to the shaft 64E and upon which shaft are located the two d riving-pulleys 65 and 66, said driving-pulleys being' driven in opposite directions, preferably by open and crossed belts, and between the pulleys 65 and 66 is located the clutch 6T,whieh clutch is drawn out of engagement or into engagement with the desired pulley 65 or 66 by means of the operating-lever 68. The operation of this part of the mach-ine is as follows: Then it is desired to remove a skelp from the mandrel Q, the shaft 64: is rotated in the direction that will move the head or carriage 53, together with its parts, including the stripper 57, toward the rear end of the machine, or, in other words, to the rig'ht in Fig. Q, the skelp moving off the mandrel 2 between the rollers 69 and Tl). ll'hen the carriage is moved the desired length or distance, it is brought back to its normal position by the shifting of the clutch 6T, when it is in proper position to remove from the mandrel another pipe. "It will be understood that the pipe justin the rear of the last one made will be pushed entirely off the mandrel at the time the one last made is being removed. The drive-chain 5e extends around the sprocket-wheels 60 and 71, and for the purpose of holding' the chain 54in proper condition as to tension the shaft T2 of the sprocket-wheel T1 is journaled in the hinged bar '73,which hinged bar is adjusted by means of the screw-threaded bolt 74, which screwthreaded bolt abuts against the housing 59, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 2.
For the purpose of imparting rotary motion to the shafts Q3 and Q4 the drive-chains 25 and Q6 are provided, which drive-chains lead to the sprocket- wheels 20 and 20", the sprocket-wheels 20 and Q0" being mounted upon the power-shaft Q1.
In order that the strip from which the pipe is to be made or formed may be properly guided soas to bring it into proper position with reference to the lower folding-head 3, the guide flanges T are provided, which guide-fianges are connected to the standards 5 or their equivalents.
It will be understood that in order to properly adjust the pitmans 33 and BAL, so as to give to the folding- heads 39 and 40, together with their folding-plates, the exact movement to properly act upon the sheet from which the pipe is to be made it is very important that said pitmans should be properly adjusted not only as to the throw of the wrist- pins 31 and 32 to impart a longer or shorter stroke to thepitmans, but also to the distance between the extreme inner throw of the wrist-pins and the final stopping-point of the folding-plates, this being' necessary that the proper locking of the hooked edges may be brought about, and in order to do this the coupling-links 35 are provided, by which arrangement a fine and accurate adjustment can be made and at the same time the folding-plates 4l and 42 brought into true parallel positions with reference to the mandrel.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*-w 1. 1n a tube-forming machine, a mandrel held in fixed position, a central, reciprocating, folding-head provided with a concaved face, means for imparting a reciprocating movement to said folding-head, lateral foldingheads provided with folding-plates, one of the folding-plates being' capable of yielding' Inovement, and means for imparting a reciprocating' movement to the lateral folding-heads and their plates, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a tube-forming machine, the combination of a mandrel, lateral folding-heads adapted to move to and from the mandrel, one of the folding-heads carrying a fixed folding'- plate and another carrying a yielding' folding'- plate, and means for deflecting the yielding folding-plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a tube-forming machine, a mandrel, a reciprocating folding-head provided with a hinged folding-plate, said hinged folding-plate IOO ITO
p rovided with an inclined upper surface, a reciprocatinghead provided with a fixed folding-plate, arms carrying rollers and the rollers located in a plane above the lowest point of the inclined portion of the hinged foldingplate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a tube-forming machine, the combination of a frame, amandrel carried by the frame, folding-heads located adjacent to the mandrel, the central one of said folding-heads provided with a concave face and the two lateral folding-heads provided with folding-plates, one of which is yielding, a track or Way having mounted thereon a traveling head or carriage, and the traveling head or carriage provided with a stripper, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a tube-forming machine, the combination of a frame, a track or way, and a carriage mounted thereon, said carriage provided with a stripper, sprocket wheels mounted upon shafts locatedat the opposite ends of the track or way, and the shaft of one of the sprocket'- wheels journaled in an adjustable hinged: bar or frame, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. In a tube-forming machine, the combination of a frame and a mandrel in fixed position, lateral folding-heads slidably mounted upon a frame and provided with foldingplates1 parallel shafts provided with cranks and the cranks provided with adjustable wristpins, pitmans connected to the folding-heads and to the Wrist-pins and the pitmans provided with coupling-heads adapted to adjust the length of the pitmans, and means for imparting rotary motion to the parallel shafts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
