Be it known that I, IVAN IVIDE, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Chicag'o, in the county of Cool( and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.
lhe object of this invention is the production of a loose-leaf binder embodying' the various improvements hereinafter pointed out.
ln the accompanying' drawings, Figure I is a top plan view, partly in section, of a binder embodying' the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on dotted line .2 2 of `Fig. l. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal vertical section throug'h the binder, taken on dotted line 3 3 of Fig'. l.
In the embodiment herein shown a curved back portion A extends throughout the length of the binder and is provided at its ends with integral end pieces A' and A2 for closing the ends of the binder, said end pieces extending' at substantially a right angle with the back portion A. At each end of each of the end pieces A A2 is formed a stop-flange A, and the end piece A has an opening A" therethrough for receiving' an operating-key to be hereinafter more fully described.
Two side members B and C, adapted to be moved toward and from each other, lie between the end piecesl A and Agand are provided with side flanges B and C and with rigid end pieces Bf3 and C2, respectively. Near their opposite ends the side members are also provided with transverse integral sleeves B3 and l", internally screw-threaded, the sleeves B"i having' right-hand threads and the sleeves C lefthand threads. Upon the inner faces of the flanges B and C are rigidly mounted four pairs of holding-pins, one pin of each pair being tubular to telescope with the coinciding' pin upon the opposite flange. Each flange carries two solid pins B4 C* and two tubular pins B5 C, the length of the pins being' such that the pins of the pairs are not separated in the operation of the binder. Upon the outer side of each of the side flanges B C, near the upper edge thereof` is a series of integral cover-attaching' lugs or ears B'j C, the lugs upon each side being provided with alined A housing' D is secured to the inner side of the back portion A, near cach end thereof,
cacli of said housings comprising two secv tions D, formed, preferably, of sheet metal and secured to the back portion A by means of angle-pieces D2, riveted to said sections D and the back portion. The sides of the housings l) are provided with openings D, alined with the screw-threzuled sleeves B C"i of the side members ,B and C, and in their opposite ends said housings have alined openings D".
A shaft E, provided at its opposite ends with right and left hand screw-threads, respectively, lies within the openings D3 of the housings D, with its ends extending' into the correspondingly screw-threaded sleeves 133CJ of the members B and C. IVithin the housings D each of the shafts E carries a wormwheel I, fixed on its said shaft.
F refers to an operating-shaft extending' throughout substantially the entire length of the binder and rotatably supported within the openings D4 of the housings D. This shaft within each of the housings D is provided with a worm F, adapted to mesh with the worm-wheel E in said housing.
The end of the shaft F adjacent to the opening' A" in the end piece A is squared to receive a socket-key G for rotating said shaft, said key being' adapted to be inserted into said opening' A4.
Covers H of the ordinary description are hinged to the side members B and C in any suitable manner. In this instance I have pivotally mounted them upon the lugs B CG of said side members, each of said covers being' provided with notches H to receive said lugs and with a pintle H2, extending through the lugs and the cover.
A rotation of the worm-shaft F communicates rotatory motion to the shafts E for moving the side members B and C toward or from each other, according to the direction of rotation of said shaft F.

In constructing this binder the embodiment herein shown may be changed in various details without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, wherefore I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the particular form herein illustrated and described.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a loose-leaf binder, in combination, a back portion curved in transverse section; two side members adapted to have a transverse sliding movement with relation to said back; a transverse shaft oppositely screw-threaded at its opposite ends to have a screw-thread engagement with said side members; a wormwheel fixed onv said transverse shaft; an operating-shaft extending along' the longitudinal center line of said back portion within the curve thereof; and a worm fixed on said operating-shaft and adapted to engage the wormwheel on said screw-threaded shaft.

In a loose-leaf binder, in combination, a back portion curved in transverse section; two side members adapted to have a transverse sliding movement with relation to said back; a housing secured to said back portion upon the inner concave side thereof and near the longitudinal center line thereof; a shaft rotatably mounted within said housing, having' a worm-wheel fixed thereon within the housing and being oppositely screw-threaded at its opposite ends to have a screw-thread engagement with said side members; an operatingshaft extending longitudinally of said back portion and adapted to lie within the curve of said back portion and being' rotatively mounted in said housing; and a worm fixed on said operating shaft within said housing and adapted to engage the worm-wheel on said screw-threaded shaft.

Ina loose-leaf binder, in combination, a back portion curved in transverse section and having' end pieces; two side members adapted to lie between the end pieces of said back portion and to have a transverse sliding movement with relation to said back, each side member also having an integral internallyscrew-threaded sleeve, a side fiange, and inwardly extending' telescoping holdingpins; a shaft extending transversely of and rotatably mounted on said back portion, said shaft being oppositely screw-threaded on its opposite ends to engage the screw-threads in said sleeves; aworm-wheel fixed to said shaft; and an operating-shaft extending longitudinally of said back portion and lying' within the concave side of said back portion beneath said screw-threaded transverse shaft and having fixed thereon a worm for engaging the worm-wheel on said screw-threaded shaft.

In a loose-leaf binder, in combination, a back portion curved in transverse section and having end pieces; two side members adapted to liebetween the end pieces of the back and have a transverse sliding movement with relation to said back, each side member also having an integral internally screw threaded sleeve, a side fiange, inwardly-extending telescoping holding-pins upon the inner sidel of said fiange, and perforated lugs upon its outer side adapted to receive ahinged cover; a housing secured to said back portion upon the inner concave side thereof and near the longitudinal center line thereof; a shaft rotatably mounted within said housing, having' a wormwheel fixed thereon within the housing' and being' oppositely screw-threaded at its opposite ends to eng'age the screw-threads in said sleeves; an operating-shaft extending longitudinally of said back portion and adapted to lie within the curve of said back portion and being rotatably mounted in said housing; and a worm fixed on said operating-shaft within said housing and adapted to engage the wormwheel on said screw-threaded shaft.
5. In a loose-leaf binder, in combination, a back portion provided with integral end pieces, said end pieces having stop-flanges at their ends; and two side members slidably supported with relation to said back portion, said side members having integral end pieces provided with stop-fianges adapted to engagethe stop-fianges upon the end pieces of the back portion, for limiting the outward movement of said side members.
