Be it known that l, FRANKLIN-J. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing in WVoburn, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fleshing-BIachines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a machine for treating hides, skins, and leather, and is especially adapted for fleshing hides and skins, and more particularly slimy hides and skins.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and etlicient machine for the purpose specified and one in which the desired or required gripping effected upon the hide or skin may be obtained extraneous to the bed-roll, whereby the latter is required to merely support the hide or skin while it is being treated and is relieved from injurious or excessive pressure, thereby prolonging the life of the bed-roll in machines of this class.
The particular features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation with parts broken away of a machine embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section on the line 2 2. Fig. 1, looking toward the right; Figs. 3 and L, details in section and elevation, to be referred to, which enable the operation of the machine to be readily understood.
In the machine herein shown as embodying this invention, 11 represents abed-roll, which may be of any suitable or usual construction or which may be made hollow to receive air or other liuid. In the present instance the bed-roll is composed of an inner cylinder 6 and an outer cylinder 7, forming between them a chamber 8, which in practice may be filled with air under pressure or with water or other fluid, and while I have chosen to illustrate this form of bed-roll I do not wish to be understood as restricting my invention in this respect, as the said bed-roll may be a rubber-covered roll, such as now commonly employed in machines of this class. The bedroll a is mounted in movable supports, shown as levers 7) c, pivotally mounted near their center in the side frames or uprights (Z c, which are connected by suitable tie-bars f and constitute the essential portion of the framework of the machine. The levers 71 c on the side of their pivots opposite to the bedroll (I have mounted in them a hide-engaging device or roll y, which may be made plain or fluted on its periphery and which will be hereinafter referred to as the pinch-roll. The pivots /z for the levers 7) c extend from the outer sides of the same, so as to leave a free and unobstructed space between the bed-roll and the pinch-roll for a purpose as will bedescribed. The levers care designed to occupy a substantially vertical position when the bed-roll and pinch-roll are in their operative positions and are adapted to be rocked or moved on their pivots by mechanism under the control of the operator. In the presentinstance each of the levers 7) c has pivoted to its lower end one link or lever, 1', of a toggle mechanism, the other link or lever, j, of which is pivoted at l to a side frame of the machine, the connecting pivot 1/2 for said toggle-levers being joined by a link or connecting-rod n to a lever 0 having its pivot 11 supported by the side frames of the machine. The levers 0, which are located at opposite sides of the machine, (see Fig. 1,) are connected by a foot piece or board q and form the foot-treadle for the machine, the said levers being shown as provided with the counterweights r.
In the present embodiment of this invention the center pivot m. is above aline through the pivots Z a for the levers or links j 2 so that as the toggle-levers are straightened out or are moved toward a line through their pivots Z s the lower end of the levers 7) c are moved backward and the upper end of said levers are moved forward. The pinch-roll g cooperates in the machine herein shown with two feedrolls 1O 12, which are arranged in a substantially vertical line and are separated from each other a suflicient distance to permit the pinchroll to partially enter between the same when the said pinch-roll is moved into its operative position.
The feed-rolls 1O 12 may be mounted in the short arms of levers 13 14, mounted, as shown, on the same pivot 15, which is supported by the side frames ofthe machine, the long arms of said levers being engaged by springs 16 17 which serve to hold the feed-rolls 12 in engagement with the hide or skin with a yielding pressure. In the present instance the springs 16 17 are interposed between the long arms of the levers 13 14 and a projection or lug 19 on the side frame of the machine, and the movement of the levers by said springs is determined, as shown, by check-nuts 2O 21 on threaded rods or screws 22 23, which extend loosely through the levers 13 14 and engage the lug 19, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The bed-roll a cooperates with an operatingtool which may be a bladed cylinder or roll 25 and which may have a fixed position, as in the present instance, it being mounted in bearings in the side frames of the machine. The bladed cylinder or roll may be covered with the usual bonnet 0r guard 26, which is suitably attached to the framework of the machine. The bladed cylinder 25 may be continuously rotated in any suitable manner, and the bed-roll, pinch-roll, and feed-rolls may be rotated at the will of the operator. For this purpose the pivot h for the lever 0 constitutes a main shaft upon which is loosely mounted a driving-pulley 28, provided with a clutch hub or member 29, with which cooperates a clutch member or sleeve 30, keyed on the shaft It to rotate therewith and to move longitudinally thereon. The shaft or pivot It has fast on it a gear 31, which meshes with a gear 32 on the shaft of the bed-roll a and with a pinion 33 on a stud-shaft 34, carried by the lever c, the pinion 33 meshing with a gear 35 on the shaft of the pinch-roll g at one end thereof. The pinch-roll g is provided at its opposite end with a gear 37, (see Fig. 1,) which meshes with the pinions 38 39 on the shafts of the feed-rolls 10 12.
It will thus be seen that rotation of the shaft h effects rotation of the bed-roll a and of the pinch-roll g, which latter rotates the feed-rolls 1012 when the pinch-roll is in its operative position. (Shown inFigs. 2 and 4.) To simplify the operation of the machine, the clutch member 30 may and preferably will be operatively connected with the foot-treadle, and.
this may be effected as will now be described. The clutch member 30 has cooperating with it a clutch-operating lever 40, pivoted at 41 to a bracket 42, attached to the side frame 6 and having its lower end provided with a stud or projection 43, which enters a cam-groove 44 in the periphery of a segment 45, forming part of a crank or arm 46 on a rock-shaft 47 mounted in suitable bearings in the side frame 0 and provided with asecond crank or arm 48, which is connected by a link 49 to one of the levers 0 of the treadle mechanism. The camgroove 44 is of suitable shape to turn the lever on its pivot, so as to engage the clutch member 30 with the member 29, and thereby render the pulley fast on the shaft h when the treadle is depressed and to unclutch the pulley when the treadle is elevated by the counterweights 1. In the present instance the clutch member 30 is provided with an annular groove in which is fitted to turn a collar 130, having diametrically opposite studs or projections 131, which are engaged by the forked upper end of the lever 40.
The operation of the machine herein shown may be briefly described as follows: When the treadle is elevated, the bed-roll and pinch-roll occupy substantially the position shown in Fig. 3namely, with the pinch-roll out of engagement with the feed-rolls 1O 12 and the bed-roll removed from the knife-cylinder. The supporting-levers b 0 for the bed-roll and pinch-roll are moved into the position shown in Fig. 3 by the upward movement of the treadle through the links a and toggle-levers 2' j, and when said supporting-levers are in the position shown in Fig. 3 it will be noticed that the pinch-roll g andv the bed-roll a are on opposite sides of a substantially vertical line through the pivots h for said levers, thereby leaving an open or free space between the bed-roll and pinch-roll, through which the inner end of a hide or skin 50 thrown over the upper feed-roll 12 may fall or pass beyond the bed-roll. The machine may be pro' vided with a guide to direct the free end of the hide or skin into the space between the rights 52, fastened to the side frames of the machine. When the hide or skin has been positioned as described, the operator depresses the treadle and turns the levers Z) .0 into a substantially vertical position and causes the pinch-roll g to force the hide or skin between and into engagement with the feed-rolls 1O 12 and into substantially the position represented in Figs. 2 and 4. The hide or skin is forced between and into engagement With the feed-rolls by the pinch-roll against the action of the springs 16 17, which are compressed and cause the feed-rolls to bind the hide or skin about the pinch-roll, thereby obtaining a sufiicientlyfirm grip upon the hide or skin to enable the machine to handle slimy hides. At or about the time the pinch-roll engages the hide or skin with the feed-rolls the bedroll presents the lower portion of the hide or skin to the action of the knife-cylinder or bladed roll 25, which treats the portion of the hide or skin within the machine, usually about one-half of the same, as the said hide or skin is fed out of the machine by the feed-rolls and pinch-roll. After the treated portion of the hide or skin has been fed out of the machine, as described, the treadle is released and the pulley 28 is automatically unclutched, as
above described, and the bed-roll and pinchroll may be rendered stationary by a brake mechanism, as will be described. The operator then reverses the hide or skin and again depresses the treadle to again set the machine in operation to effect the treatment of the other part or half of the hide or skin. The brake mechanism referred to may be of any suitable construction and is herein shown as a flange or disk on the clutch member 30, which cooperates with a similar flange or disk 56, fast to the box in which the shaft it revolves. I have herein shown one construction ofmachine embodying this invention; butI do not desire to limit myself to the particular construction shown. In the presentinstance the levers 0 have mounted in them rollers 60, which serve to support the fluid-containing bed roll; but, if desired, the said rollersmay be omitted.
It is to be observed in the machine herein shown that the hide or skin is gripped between the pinch-roll and the feed-rolls, which may be of metal, and that the bed-roll, which is provided with a periphery of rubber or other yielding material, merely acts as a support for the hide or skin while undergoing treatment by the knifecylinder. As a result the rubber or other yielding periphery of the bed-roll is not subjected to severe pressure and usage, and its life is thereby materially lengthened, which is an important item in machines of the class in which an excessive pressure is required to handle slimy hides or skins.
I claim 1. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a bed-roll, a pinch-roll, a rocking support in which said bed-roll and pinch-roll are mounted to leave a space between them, a bladed cylinder or roll, a pair of feed-rolls, levers in which said feed-rolls are mounted in a substantially vertical plane, yielding means engaging said levers to move said feed-rolls toward each other, a treadle mechanism, means connecting said treadle mechanism with said rocking support to move the latter and carry the pinch-roll in one direction toward the said feed-rolls and the bed-roll in an opposite direction toward said bladed cylinder, substantially as described.
2. In a machine of the class described, in combination, abed-roll, a pinch-roll, a rocking support in which said bed-roll and pinch-roll are mounted to leave a space between them, a bladed cylinder or roll cooperating with said bed-roll and located on one side of said rocking support, a feed-roll cooperating with said pinch-roll and located on the opposite side of said support, and means to rock said support and simultaneously move said bed-roll and said pinchroll in opposite directions, substantially as described.
3. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a work-support, a pinch-roll, a rocking support in which said work-support and pinch-roll are mounted on opposite sides of the pivot for said rocking support, an operating-tool cooperating with said work-support and located on one side of said rocking support, and a feed-roll cooperating with said pinch-roll and located on the opposite side of said rocking support, and mechanism to rock said support, substantially as described.
I. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a work-support, a device to engage the hide or skin, a rocking support in which said work-support and said device are mounted on opposite sides of the pivot for said rocking support, an operating-tool cooperating with said work-support, and a hidefeeding device cooperating with the device carried by the rocking support, substantially as described.
5. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a bed-roll, a pinch-roll, levers in which said bed-roll and said pinch-roll are mounted on opposite sides of the pivots for said levers,'a treadle, mechanism connecting said levers with said treadle, mechanism for rotating said bed-roll, a clutch controlling the operation of said mechanism, and a cam operatively connected with said treadle to move therewith and controllingthe operation of said clutch mechanism, substantially as described.

In a machine of the classdescribed, in combination, a rotatable roll to engage the hide or skin, a movable support for said roll, a treadle,a manually-operated mechanism connected with said support and operated directly by said treadle, a driving mechanism for rotating said roll, a clutch controlling the operation of said driving mechanism, a cam connected with said treadle to move therewith, and means operated by said cam for moving said clutch mechanism.
7 In a machine of the class described, in combination, a bed-roll, a pinch-roll, a rocking support in which said bed-roll and pinchroll are mounted on opposite sides of the pivot for said rocking support, a bladed cylinder cooperating with said bed-roll and located on one side of said rocking support, a feed-roll cooperating with said pinch-roll and located on the opposite side of said rocking support, a lever in which said feed-roll is mounted, and means acting on said lever to cause the feed-roll to engage the hide or skin with a yielding pressure, substantially as described.
8. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a feed-roll, a pinch-roll cooperating with the upper part of said feed-roll, a bladed cylinder or roll, and a bed-roll cooperating with said bladed cylinder, said bedroll and said pinch-roll moving in opposite directions when moved into theiroperative positions, and means to effect the movement of said pinch-roll and bed-roll in opposite directions, substantially as described.
9. In a machine of the class described, in
combination, a work-support and a pinch-roll movable in opposite directions into and out of their operative positions, an operating-tool cooperating with said work-support, a feedroll cooperating with said pinch-roll, and interposed between said work-support and said pinch-roll in their operative position, and
means to effect movement of said pinch-roll and said work-support in opposite directions, substantially as described.
