MACHINE FOR MAKING CEMENT OR CEMENTITIOUS PRODUCTS- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,260, dated August 2, 1904.

Be it known that I, \YILLIAM E. JA UEs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of h lichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making lenient or (Iementitious Products; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for making products of cement or cemcntitious material, and pertains more especially to a machine which comprises a case having an interior chamber which communicates at one end with the larger end of the flaring or inwardly-tapering mouth of a forming-die through which the cement or cementitious material introduced in a plastic or moist and unset state into the said case is forced by a screw, which said screw is contained within and extends longitudinally of the chamber of the said case and through the said flaring mouth of the die into the die a suitable distance beyond the smaller end of the said mouth.
The primary object of this invention is to provide the aforesaid screw not only with threads of varying pitch, but with the thread or threads of the screw within the mouth of the die greater in pitch than the pitch of the threads of the screw between the said mouth and the material-receiving end or chargingaperture of the case and with the thread or threads arranged within or extending into the aforesaid die beyond the smaller end of the said mouth greater in pitch than the pitch of the thread or threads within the said mouth, so that the plastic cement or cementitious material is fed more rapidly into the die beyond and outside of the mouth of the die than it is fed through the said mouth and the material is fed more rapidly through the said mouth than within the chamber of the screwcontaining case outside of the said mouth,
if not kept stirred, agitated, or set in motion, is prevented from clogging and setting within the mouth of the die and obstruction to the operation of or injury to the machine is avoided.
\Vith this object in view and to the end of realizing other advantages hereinafter appearing my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a side elevation, largely in section, of a cement-productmaking machine embodying my invention, and portions are broken away in the drawing to reduce the size of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, a designates a horizontally-arranged case having an interior chamber 7) and provided at one end and at the top with a charging-aperture 0, through which the plastic cement or cementitious material is fed into the chamber 7). The said chamber 5, a suitable distance from the aperture 0, communicates with the larger end of the flaring or inwardly-tapering mouth (Z of an open ended comparatively long forming-die a, which is arranged in a horizontal plane and in line with the case a and projects from the said case in the direction in which the bar of unset cement or cementitous material operated upon by the machine is to be fed.
The die a is formed,preferably, by a suitablyconstructed open-ended box or case having an interior passage-way which corresponds in end elevation and cross-section to the thickness of the bar (not shown) which is to be formed by and within and forced through the said die. The walls of the said passage-way therefore snugly incase and are instrumental in sleeking, troweling, or smoothing the said bar.
The product is severed into predetermined lengths upon its emergence from the outer end of the die f, and the resulting blocks or sections are removed and allowed to set and harden.
A, screw 1 is arranged within and extends longitudinally and centrally of the chamber b from below the charging-aperture c to and through the die-mouth (Z and into the the beyond the said mouth (Z. The screw 9 is applied and operated in any approved manner.
The screw g is provided within the chamber 5, between the mouth (Z of the die and the charging-aperture c, with'threads h, which correspond in pitch, so that the material operated upon by the screw between the said aperture and the said mouth is uniformly fed toward the discharging end of the machine.
The screw g is provided within the diemouth (Z with threads 70, which have a pitch greater than the pitch of the threads 7t, so that the material passing into the said mouth is fed more rapidly through than into the said mouth, and of the two threads k shown the thread in the smaller end portion of the said mouth has a greater pitch than the thread within the larger end portion of the said mouth, so that the speed of the passage of the material through the said mouth is increased as the material approaches the smaller end of the mouth.
The screw 9 is provided within the die beyond and outside of the mouth (Z with a thread Z, which has a pitch greater than the pitch of the threads k, so that the speed of the passage of the material again increases as it leaves the mouth of the die.
By my improved construction it will be observed that clogging or interruption of the feed of the material within and through the mouth of the die is successfully attained and disruption of the screw or other parts of the machine is avoided, and I would here remark that the die is long enough to effect a suflicient compacting of the material within the die beyond the smaller end of the mouth of the die before the resulting product emerges from the discharging end of the die.
What I claim is- 1. A machine of the character indicated, comprising an interiorly-chambered case, a die having a flaring or inwardly tapering mouth which is arranged in line and communicates with the chamber within the said case, and a suitably-operated screw arranged within and longitudinally of the said chamber and extending centrally through the aforesaid mouth into the die beyond the inner end of the mouth, which screw is exteriorly threaded within the mouth of the die, within the die beyond and outside of the said mouth and within the aforesaid chamber outside of the said mouth, and has the thread or threads within the die outside of the mouth of the die of a pitch greater than the pitch of the thread or threads Within the said mouth and has the last-mentioned thread or threads of a pitch greater than the pitch of its threads within the aforesaid chamber outside of the said mouth.
2. A machine of the character indicated, comprising an interiorly-chambered case, a die having a flaring or inwardly tapering mouth which is arranged in line and communicates with the chamber within the said case, and an eXteriorly-threaded screw arranged within and longitudinally of the said chamber and extending centrally through and longitudinally of the said mouth into the die beyond the said mouth, and has a thread within the transversely-smaller portion of the die outside of the die-mouth of a pitch greater than the pitch of the threads within the said mouth, and has a thread within the inner end portion of the said mouth of a pitch greater than the pitch of a thread with which it is provided Within the larger end portion .of the said mouth, and has the said threads within the said mouth of a pitch greater than the pitch of the threads Within the aforesaid chamber outside of the said mouth.
3. In a machine for making a cement or cementitious product,the combination,with a comparatively long die having a tapering mouth, of means whereby material is fed through the said mouth, and means arranged within the die between the said mouth and the discharg- 7 ing end of the die and adapted to feed material more rapidly than material is fed through the aforesaid month.
