SPECIFICATION forming-.part of Letters Patent No. 766,243, dated August 2, 1904.

T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jos Erri GENING maa citi- Zen ofthe United States ot' America, and a resii which forms the subject-matter of this invention is characterized by being' double-acting'. Air is compressed not only by the usual stroke ot' the piston and piston-rod, but also by the return stroke.. For this reason two cylinders are provided, a water-cylinder and a separate air-cylinder, their pistons being connected to the same piston-rod.
In the single-acting' beer-pumps heretofore employed it sometimes happens that a waterdischarge valve located within the apparatus does not work well. Under these circumstances water is thrown upon the surface ot' the beer instead ot' air and that watermixes with the beer and spoils same. This cannot happen with my novel double-acting beerpump, because a separate air-cylinder is provided into which water never Hows. In places doing a large business-wsay, for instance, during rush hourstwo single-acting pumps are quite etten employed. Two single -acting pumps certainly require a larger outlay et' capital than one double-acting pump, which latter does the same work as the two singleacting pumps.
The invention further consists in the construction ot' a novel water inlet and discharge device and other details ot' construction, as well as the particular arrangement ot' various parts.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents in front elevation a double-acting pump which embodies my invention, ce1-tain parts of the pump being shown in section; and Fig. Q is a section ot' detail on line a' .fr ot' Fig. l.
Similar letters et' reference denote like parts in both tigures.
The pump consists, essentially, ot' a hydraulic cylinder with water inlet and outlet pipes on both sides, an air-cylinder with air inlet and outlet pipes on both sides, and a novel device for introducing into the hydraulic cylinder and discharging therefrom water automatically. This is done in such a manner that the water merely need be turned on for operating the pump, which then will work until the water is turned ott'. By means ot' this novel device water is alternately and successively introduced into the hydraulic cylinder on both sides ot' the piston,whereby the pump is made double-acting with one single hydraulic cylinder. Likewise the 'air-cylinder is made double-acting, the air-piston being secured to the same piston-rod which carries the hydraulic piston. Both pistons move simultaneously. By means of air inlet and discharge devices, one ot' which is secured to each side ot' the air-cylinder, air is introduced into the air-cylinder, compressed therein, and discharged theret'rom on both sides of the piston. By means ot my novel construction work is pert'ormed in the hydraulic cylinder as well as in the air-cylinder by the direct stroke of the piston as well as the return stroke.
In the drawings, u. represents the hydraulic cylinder, and 7) the piston. The air-cylinder is (.lesignated by the letter c, and l represents the air-piston. Both are mounted on a piston-rod a, which is common to both,and therefore both pistons are actuated simultaneously. The water-inlet pipe j' is connected to a tube g, which forms part ot' the automatic water inlet and outlet device. The tube ,f/ has two closed ends f/ (/2, which are conical in form. Near each ot' the closed ends the tube g/ has several openings y g. Usually tour are provided. At each end ot' the tube f/ there is a stutling-box /l lr', in which the tube moves to and fro. The stutiing-box /z 1s provided with packing' 7b2, consisting of lamp-wick or other suitable material. Likewise the stufling-box /L has similar packing 7a3. At the end of each stuffing-box there is a conical opening, into which fits a conical closed end of the movable tube. Each conical opening'at the end of a stuiiing-box forms a valve with a conical closed end of the movable tube,which closes off tightly the water when the conical closed'end of the tube is llocated in the conical opening of ythe end of the stui'ling-box. Opposite the closed end of the tube g a waterdischarge pipe f is provided, and another discharge-pipe, f2, issecured in like manner to the stuffing-box z. Both are united below and form a single pipe f3, which leads into the waste or sewer pipes. At the end of the stuiHng-box t there is a waterconducting tube vl, while a similar tube f is secured at the end of the stu fling-box t. There are provided on the tube g two collars/u7u',wliich are permanently connected thereto near the waterinlet tube f. The collar 7c carries a pin Z, while the collar /r carries a pin Z. The tube g/,with the stuffing-boxes, openings, and pipes, represents a valve system. An automatic device is provided for moving the tube g by means of the pins secured thereto. This device consists of a metal bar mf, which is pivoted upon a pin projectingfrom a post 0. The metal bar carries near its top a weightv/J. The bar m, with weight fw, is actuated by the pins j) p, permanently secured on the pistonrod e by means of two collars p2 p3. The collars extend above into two sliding rings p* p5, which are supported by a guidingrod g. This rod is permanently secured above the piston-rod between the two cylinders. The pins V2) p being permanently secured to the piston-rod wi'll move with same, while the stead ying-rings pf jf will slide along the guiding-rod g.
The water -pipe fi, leading from the stuffing-box it, connects with the hydraulic cylinder, so that the water enters on the side where the piston-rod passes into same. The waterpipe il, however, leads to the opposite end of the hydraulic cylinder and feeds water into same in the opposite direction. From this it is apparent that water is fed into the hydraulic cylinder on both sides of the piston. This is done alternately and successively, so that the piston is moved forward and backward and in accordance therewith the piston in the air-cylinder.
The double-acting pump has been described as beingI operated by water, but may also be operated by steam.
The air-cylinder has an air inlet and discharge tube 'o' on one side andan air inlet and discharge pipe r on the opposite side. The
pipe fr is connected to an automaticv air inlet and discharge valve s, while the pipe '7" has a similar valve s. From these valves the pipes r2 r3 conduct the air into vthe pipe fri, which connects with both, and from there the air is forced into the air-reservoir.
Assuming that the pipe g of the automaticoperating device and the pistons in the cylinders are. in the position indicated in the drawings, then the water entering through the pipe f will fill the movable pipe g. The openings g* are then located within the packing h3 of the stuffing-box L, and no water will pass through the tube vl. In the position shown in the drawings the closed end closes off the discharge-tube f', and the openings g3 in the tube g are located right below the tube 2f. Therefore the water will How through the holes g3 and the tubel t' into the hydraulic cylinder and push the piston forward. Vhile this takes place the pin p on the piston-rod e will reach the metal bar m, which is loosely secured, and move same without changing the location of the tube g until the weight fw passes the vertical center line. At this moment the weight vw enters into action and in falling down moves the bar m, whose lower end strikes against the pin Z, whereby the tube g will be moved to the right. 'Inthis new position of the tube g its closed end g2 closes off the discharge-pipe f2, and the openings g4 are right below the tube t" and establish connection therewith, while the openings g3 at the other end of the tube will move into the packing' if and communication between the tube 71 and the openings g3 is interrupted. The water flowing now into the tube g will pass through the openings g* and the pipe c" into the hydraulic cylinder, entering there from the opposite side, and therefore pushing the piston backward. The returning piston now forces the water iirst introduced in the cylinder out of same through the same pipe z', through which it was introduced. The water then flows through the pipe t', the opening g5,
and the discharge-pipef into the waste or sewer pipe. Vhile this takes place the metal bar m is moved by the pin p. Upon passing the vertical center line the weight w on the bar m enters into action, and in falling down the lower end of the bar m strikes the pin Z, whereby the latter is shifted into its original position. (Shown in the drawings.) The water flowing now into the tube g will again flow through the openings g3 and the tube t' into the cylinder and move the piston forward again. The advancing piston then forces the water contained in the cylinder out of same. The water returns through the pipe t, passing through the opening g( of the stuiling-boX L', and flows through the discharge-pipe f2 into the sewer-pipes.
The action of the air-cylinder is the same as the action of the hydraulic cylinder, because the pistons are united to one piston-rod and IOO' IIO
move simultanwmsly. lVhen the pistons occupy the posit ions shown in the drawings, then the air contained in the air-cylimler will be compressed and t'orced throug'h the pipes f', ri", and rL into the reservoir. Meanwhile the space on the other side of the air-piston has been tilled with air by means otl the automatic inlet-valves, and upon return ot the piston this air is compressed and discharged through the pipes r', ri", and r* into the reservoir.

A water-actuated double-acting' pump comprising' a hydraulic cylinder with piston, an air-'cylinder with piston, a piston-rod common to both cylinders having' two collars with pins permanently securedto its middle portion, in combination with an automatic water inlet and discharge device consisting of a movable tube having conical closed ends adapted to act as valves, a water-supply tube secured toits center portion, a straling-box with packing' at eachend ot' the movable tube, a conical opening' at the end ot' each .stuHing-box torming a valve-seat for each closed conical end ot' the movable tube, a water-conducting pipe connecting one stutiing-box with the h vdranlic cylinder' on that side where the piston-rod enters, a water-conducting pipe connecting the other stutIing-box with the hydraulic cylinder on the opposite side, holes in the movable tube near the closed ends ot' same adapted to establish communication alternately with the water-conducting pipes, two collars with pins tixed to the movable tube, a metal bar with weight at its top pivoted upon a pin projectingt'rom a post in such a manner that its middle portion is moved by the pins on the piston-rod and its bottom end strikes the pins on the movable tube thereby shifting same during' the operation of the pump.
