UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORIN FUNKHOUSER, OF NEW BRIGHTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
TROLLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,177, dated August 2, 1904.
Application filed June 26, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ORIN FUNKnoUsER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Brighton, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trolleys, of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trolleys, and more particularly to that class of trolleys whereby means is provided to prevent the same from leaving the trolley-wire.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved trolley-harp upon which means is provided or attached thereto to prevent the trolley-wheel from leaving the trolley-wire, also means whereby when the trolley-wire becomes disengaged from the trolley-wheel the same will be returned thereto.
A further object of my invention is to provide a trolley-wheel which will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, and highly effioient in operation.
Briefly described, my invention comprises the ordinary trolley-harp, upon which is pivoted upwardly-extending arms having small wheels journaled in their upper ends, and to the lower end of said arms is secured the ordinary trolley-rope, whereby the arms may be disengaged from their normal position, so that the trolley-wheel may be reversed.
In describingthe invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout both views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved trolley. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
In the accompanying drawings I illustrate my improved trolley as comprising the ordinary trolley-pole 1, carrying the harp 2, in which is journaled the trolley-wheel 3. Pivotall y mounted within the lugs I, carried upon a plate 5, attached to the sides of the harp 2, are the arms 6, said arms extending upwardly upon a line parallel to the trolley-pole and having their upper ends bent, as indicated at '7, upon a line parallel to the trolley-wire, and in said ends are journaled the grooved wheels 8, which extend over the trolley-wire, as illus- Serial No. 163,209. (No model.)
trated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. To the lower end of said arm 6 is connected the trolley-rope 9, said trolley-rope being secured in an aperture 10, formed in the end of the arm, the trolley-rope passing around under the trolle pole and through an eye 11, secured thereto. Upon the trolley-harp I provide pins 12, which provide protection for the arms 6, and between the arms 6 and the plates 5, carried by the harp, I secure the springs 13, which have a tendency to normally hold the arms in position. (Illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.)
The operation of my improved trolley is as follows: In case the trolley-wheel should leave the wire the wire will be engaged against the wheels 8, carried in the extension 7 of the arms 6, and will be prevented from becoming out of alinement with the trolley-wheel, whereby the same will again engage the trolley. If it is desired to remove the trolley: wheel from the wire, the trolley-rope 9 is pulled downwardly, compressing springs 13, opening the extension 7, whereby the trolleywire 14 is allowed to pass out from between the wheels 8, whereby the trolley may be dis' engaged from the wire.
It will be seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings that one of the wheels 8 is grooved, while the other Wheel is beveled upon its periphery, whereby said wheel may engage the grooved wheel, thereby making it impossible for the trolley to get without the arms 6. The pins 12 will materially assist in preventing the arms 6 from being torn from their sockets should said arms be struck a violent blow.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A trolley, comprising a harp in which is journaled a trolley-wheel, arms pivotally secured t0 the sides of said harp, the upper ends of said arms being bent in alinement with the trolley and having wheels journaled therein, said wheels meshing with each other and adapted to lie over the trolley-wire, a trolleyrope connected to the other end of said arms, means for normally holding the arms in such a position that the wheels carried in the upper end thereof will be in engagement with each other, substantially as described.
2. A trolley comprising a harp in which is journaled a trolley-wheel, arms pivotally secured to the sides of said harp, the upper ends of said arms being bent in alinement with the trolley and having wheels journaled therein,
said wheels meshing with each other and adapted to lie over the trolley-Wire, a trolleyrope connected to the other end of said arms, a spring interposed between the sides of said harp and the inner sides of the arms, and pins 5 carried by the harp for engagement with said arms to protect the latter.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ORIN FUNKHOUSER. In presence of FRED O. HENZI, H- J. LEVI's.
