JOHN H. ZETTY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
FLOOR-THINIBLE.
SP'EI2II`2`ICATION` forming part of Letters Patent No. 765,760, dated July 26, 1904.
Application filed April 26,1904. Serial No. 205,018. (No model.)l
To @ZZ whom, t WIr/Ly concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN H. ZETTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor-Thirnbles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved floor-thimble adapted to permit the projection of a hose-nozzle from the room above into a cellar below it.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure lis a centr'al vertical sectional view thr'ough the device as it appears in a iioor. Fig. 2 shows a similar' view with a hose nozzle passed through the thimble. Fig. 3 is a combined horizontal section and plan view, the broken line w, Fig. l, indicating the planes on which the view is taken. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a fastening device for securing and bracing' the lower end of the thimble.
In the views, 1 designates a ring provided with a sunken internal shoulder or seat l for a cover and with an external thread lb to receive the body of the thimble. The floor is countersunk to receive the ring, so that the upper' surface of the latter shall be flush with the floor. The ring is made of such depth that its thread lb will be below the floor.
2 designates the body of the thimble. This is threaded at its upper end to turn on the thread of the ring. The body of the thimble is of large diameter at its upper' end and of smaller diameter at its lower end to permit the ready iinding of theopening and the correct directing' and holding of the hose-nozzle. The thimble at the upper end of the portion of small diameter is provided with soft packing' or seat 2, held in place by a threaded ring 2l.
3 designates a valve of ovate form to iit on the packing' 2 and close the passage through the thimble. This valve is secured against loss with a chain 3, connecting' it to the inner wall of the thimble.
4 is a cover or floor-plate to fit in the upper end of the floor-ring flush with the lioor. The cover is made with a handle 4.
Thelower end of the body of the thimble can be secured and braced in place by means of a strap 5, having a central ring that lits onto the thimble-body, the ends of the strap being fastened to the lower edges of the joists under the floor, as indicated. Where the r'oom and cellar are large, several of these thimbles will be located at appropriate places for reaching a fire in any part of the cellar.
The function of the valve is to keep down the smoke while locating the iire and to permit certain and prompt closing of the thimble when the opening is not used. The packing'- ring or seat of the valve also serves as a seat for the nozzle when water is being thrown into the cellar to prevent smoke from rising into the faces of the firemen.
It will be observed that the cover and valve are promptly removable and that the valve cannot be lost and can be dropped onto the seat without loss of time.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a floor-thimble, the combination of the thimble-body having a valve-seat therein, a removable floor-plate or cover for' the upper end of the thimble and a removable valve for the valve-seat.
2. In a floor-thimble, the combination of a Hoor-ring to be seated in the upper' side of the oor and having a threaded portion to extend below the Hoor, a thimble-body portion threading onto the ring below the Hoor, a valve-seat in said body portion, a removable valve for said seat in the ring, and a removable cover or iloor'plate seated in the ring.
3. A floor-thimble having in combination a floor-engaging portion of large diameter, and
a portion of smaller diameter to extend below the Hoor, a soft valve-seat or packing-ring between the portions of large and small diameter, a removable cover for the portion of large diameter and a removable valve for the valve-seat chained to the interior of the portion of large diameter but so as to be removable therefrom.
4. A floor-thimble having in combination a IOO IO eter, a removable cover for the portion of large diameter and a removable valve of ovate form for the valve-seat chained to the interior of the portion of large diameter but so as to be removable therefrom.
In testimony whereof l aiiix my Signature in I5 presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. ZETTY. Witnesses:
