SPRING MAP-ROLLER CANE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 764,301, dated July 5, 1904. Application filed March 25, 1904;. Serial No. 200,065. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER L. OSBORN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Map- Roller Canes, of which the following is a specifieation containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to spring map-roller canes; and it consists of the novel features herein shown, described, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a cane embodying the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail, upon an enlarged scale, showing the n1aproller. Fig. 3 isa cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line 4: 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a eross-section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the cane comprises thetubular intermediate section 6, the hand-section 7, and the foot-section 8. The hand-section 7 is inserted into the upper end of the tubular section 6 and held in place by the screw 9. The footsee tion 8 is inserted into the lower end of the tubular section 6 and is supported by the screw 10. The map-roller-bearing plate 11 is secured against the lower face of the handsection 7 within the tubular section 6 and held in position by nails or screws 12, the central opening 13 of said plate being squared. A similar map-roller-bearing plate 14 is secured against the upper end face of the foot-section 8 within the tubular section 6 and secured in position by screws or nails 15, the central opening 16 in said plate being round. The map-roller 17 is a tin tube. Theend plate 18 is a disk fitting loosely in the tubular section 6, and the tubular flange 19 extends from the end plate into the end of the map-roller 17, there being an indentation 20, punched from the map-roller into the flange, to hold the plate 18 in position. The end plate 21 has a tubular flange 22 extending into the opposite end of the map-roller 17, and indentations 23 hold the plate in position relative to the roller. A stub-shaft or spindle extends from the center of the plate 21 into the opening 16. The operating-shaft 25 extends loosely through the center of the plate 18, the outer end 26 of said shaft being squared to lit in the squared opening 13 and the inner end 27 of said shaft being bifurcated. The squared end 26 extends through the squared opening 13 and a considerable distance into the hand-section 7 to hold the operating-shaft 25 from rotation relative to the hand-section. The extended length. of the squared portion 26 is convenient in assembling parts, said squared portion extending beyond the upper end of the tubular intermediate section 6, so that when the hand-section is to be inserted into the tubular section the squared portion 26 is inserted into the opening 13 before the end of the hand -seetion is inserted into the tubular section 6. The winding-spring 28 is placed in the roller 17, the inner end ot'said spring being connected to the shaft 25 by being placed. in the bifurcation 27 and the outer end. of said spring being connected to the plate 18, so that the tension of the spring is exerted. to rotate the roller 17. A slot 29 is formed through the tubular section 6 between the plates 18 and 21, and a map or other suitable apron 30 is attached to the roller 17, wound upon the roller, and extended outwardly through the slot 29, so that when the apron is pulled through the slot 29 the spring will be wound up and when the apron is released the ten* sion of the spring will rewind the apron upon the roller 17.
