PATENT OFFICE.
GATE-LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,278, dated July 5, 1904.
Application filed an ary 9, 1904. Serial No. 188,346. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. DONOVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grate-Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fastenings for gates, and more particularly to the fastenings for the gates used on ferry-boats; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of portions of a gate provided with fastenings according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the upper fastening. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lower fastening.
A and B are portions of the palings of two gates, such as used on ferry-boats. These gate members or panels are hinged and supported in any approved manner and have upper horizontal bars A and lower horizontal bars B.
C is a hook provided with a socket a, which is secured to one of the bars A, and Dis a rectangular eye provided with a socket (Z, which is secured to the opposed bar A.
E is a hook provided with a socket c, which is secured to one of the lower bars B, and F is a rectangular eye provided with a socket f, which is secured to the opposed bar B.
Each hook is cranked or ofiFset, so'that it may engage freely with its eye, and the upper hook C is longer than the lower hook, so that it may engage with its eye in advance of the lower hook. The eye D for the upper hook is also longer than the eye of the lower hook, so that the upper hook may have more play, and the vertical portions of the hooks are preferably arranged out of line with each other.
What I claim is- 1. The combination, with two gate-palings having upper and lower horizontal bars, of a hook and an eye provided with sockets which are secured to the sides of the adjacent ends of the said upper bars, and a hook and an eye provided with sockets which are secured to the sides of the adjacent ends of the said lower bars, the opposed bars of the said palings being arranged in line with each other and the said hooks being offset to one side of their sockets so as to engage with the said eyes.
2. The combination, with two gate-palings having upper and lower horizontal bars, of a hook and an eye secured to the sides of the adjacent ends of the said upper bars, and ahook and an eye secured to the sides of the adjacent ends of the said lower bars, the said upper hook being longer vertically than the said lower hook and the said upper eye being longer horizontally than the said lower eye, and the said hooks being oiiset to one side of their sockets so as to engage with the said eyes.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. DONOVAN.
