CORN-PLANTER.
SPEGI FIGA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,258, dated J uly 5, 1904.
Application filed May 18, 1903. Serial No. 157,587.' (No model.)
To all whom it nuty concern.-
Be it known that I, HANS SoI-ILIoI-IT, residing at Walnut, in the county ofPottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain useful Improvements in Corn-Planters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in corn-planters.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved dropper mechanism adapted to be secured to any ordinary corn-planter in which there is provided a rotating axle.
In the accompanying drawings 1 have shown in Figure 1 a side view of my dropper mechanism with parts broken away. Fig. 2 shows a top View thereof with portions broken away, while Fig. 3 shows a detail of the adjustingbar as used in my invention.
As has been set forth, the object of my invention is to provide a dropper mechanism to be attached to any corn-planter provided with the usual hopper and arotating driving-shaft.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows an ordinary driving-axle 1, secured to a suitable hound 4 and being revolubly supported thereby, as is usual, and to this driving-axle 1 is secured an ordinary chain-gear 2, over which extends a chain 3, Working over a suitable chain-gear O, as shown in Fig. 2, which is revolubly secured to a bracket 21, secured to a suitable supporting-bar secured in any manner to the corn-planter structure. This bracket 21 is further provided with a suitable disk 14, from which extends the crank-pin 15, supporting the pitman 16, which by means of a pin 17 is secured to the rockbar 20, held by the pin 18, secured to a block 19, fastened to a suitable frame member K of the corn-planter. Secured to a suitable part of the planter-frame K'is a sleeve H, within which works a shaft L, which shaft supports a suitable ratchet-edged perforatedfeed-plate D, which is held and supported by means of a slotted plate C, provided with the support ing-ribs f, by means of which this bottom plate C is secured to the planter-frame mem bers gin a suitable manner. Held above the bottom plate C and supported by means of the upper edges of the ribs f, as is shown in Fig. 1, is a ring 13, to which is secured a suitable hopper, as is usual in corn-planter construction, this hopper being provided with a suitable slot through which the bridge-bar 12, secured to the adjusting-bar B, would. extend. The hopper being old forms no part of my invention.
It will be noticed that the ratchet-edged feedplate D is provided with a plurality of openings 00, which are disposed in three circles, the inner openings being the smallest and the outer being the largest, and these openings are adapted to hold grain in varying numbers, the inner openings, for instance, being adapted to hold three grains, the next four, and theouter five. Secured to the hound 4 is the supporting-bar 10, which is provided with a pivot 7), supporting the pivoted lever a, which lever at one end is secured by means of the pivot-pin Z) to the adjusting-bar B, which below is provided with a plate A, as shown in Fig. 3, adapted to work into a slot within the bottom plate C, this slot being of a length so that all of the openings within the plate (l come in alinement there and register with said, slot, so that anything within these openings :0 will drop through the slot and rest upon the plate A. Extending from the adjusting-bar B is the bridge-bar 12, which is held above the ratchet-edged feed-plate D and is provided with a nosing a, by means of which the bridge-bar is supported at its free end. Socured to the pivoted lever a is a yoke (6, which yoke is secured to a connecting-bar c, which, by means of a pin 8, is secured to an ordinary adjusting-lever 7, working in conjunction with the notched sector 9, so that by Ioo which supports the seed and forms really the bottom of the hopper and which has all its openings 01 filled, so that the seed Within the openings as they come above the slot within the bottom plate G are permitted to drop through. As the axle 1 rotates the chain 3 is actuated to rotate the disk 1a to rock the bar 20 backward and forward, and this bar is loosely mounted on the pin 18, so that the same at its upper end will work over the ratchetedged perforated feed-plate D to rotate the same. The grain is prevented from packing above the openings w by means of the bridgebar 12.
It is of course understood that in corn-planters usually two dropper mechanisms are employed, and in Fig. 2 l have shown a second pivoted lever a, which could be secured to the adjacent instrumentalities used in connection with a second dropper.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a suitably-supported driving-shaft, of a chain-gear, secured to said driving-shaft, a chain passing over said gear,
a second chain-gear, said chain also working over said second gear, a disk secured to said second chain-gear, a pitman secured to said disk, a suitably-held rock-bar, said pitman being secured to said rock-bar, a slotted, supported bottom plate, an adjusting-bar, a plate secured to said adjusting-bar covering said slot within said bottom plate, a pivoted lever extending from said adjusting-bar, an adjusting lever secured to said pivoted lever, a ratchet-edged perforated feed-plate held by said slotted bottom plate, a rock-bar engaging said ratchet-edged perforated feed-plate, and a bridge-bar extending from said adjustingbar and working above said ratchet-edged perforated feed-plate, all arranged substantially asset forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of Witnesses.
