To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I. Moses H. NABER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Springs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of spring attachments employed with platform rocking-chairs. Heretofore, so far as I am aware, such springs have been so made as to necessitate the use of brackets for securing the ends of the springs to the rocking-chair and stationary base members.
One of the objects of my invention is to dispense with these brackets, thereby not only reducing the cost of manufacture, but also simplifying the structure.
A further object is to provide a rockingchair spring comprising a pair of parallel laterally-spaced compressible coils made of a single strand of wire.
The above and further objects of the invention are fully explained in the accompanying specification, and the novel features of the same are pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is asectional elevation showing the inside of the rocker and base-rail of a rocking-chair provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modification of the invention.
In Fig. 1 the spring attachment is shown in connection with a rocking-chair, A designating the rocker member, B the stationary base member, and C the bars connecting the opposite sides of the base.
The invention consists generally of a pair of vertically-disposed laterally-spaced coilsprings 10 and 11, made from a single strand of spring-wire and connected by a horizontal portion 12. More specifically, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the strand of wire is formed with the central horizontal connecting-arm 12, at the ends of which are provided eyes 13 and 14, formed by bending the wire into vertical loops parallel with the side of the rocker member A. The ends are then carried downwardly and forwardly past the part 12, as at 15, and wound into the vertical coils 10 and 11. In the construction illustrated these coils are wound in opposite directions and extend outwardly from the loops. This is not regarded as material,however, as the coils may be wound in the same direction or reversely or in any other manner desired. The extremities of the wire are carried rearwardly and formed into eyes 16 and 17, which are disposed at the rear of each coil and in the same plane as the coils 13 and l4t, as shown in Fig. 2, and preferably on the longitudinal axis of the springs, as shown in Fig. 1. The eyes 13, 14c, 16, and 17 being located at the rear side of the coils and laterally with reference thereto and extending in a plane parallel with the plane of the side of the rocker, a firm bearing is provided, whereby the ends of the springs may be held securely against the rocker and base members of the chair when secured by the nuts 18, screwing on bolts 19, passing through the respective chair members and the eyes. The attaching-eyes are offset or located laterally with reference to the coils, which, therefore, when the spring is in use are spaced from the rocker members, as shown in Fig. 2. This avoids contact between the rocker members and the coils and the consequent friction which would be incident to the rubbing of the rocking member against the side of the coils. In order to prevent pivotal movement of the springs on the securingbolts and consequent loosening of the parts, the extremities of the wire may be extended inwardly along the base-rail and provided with other eyes, as 20, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,) adapted to be fastened by bolts and nuts, thereby furnishing additional though not essential securing means for the spring.
Preferably the spring attachment is secured to the rocker and base members with its front coil 10 located substantially on the vertical median line thereof, the rear coil 11 then being disposed nearer the rear of the chair members. The advantage of this arrangement is that while the rocker member is maintained with its seat in a substantially horizontal position under normal conditions the spring 11 is located where it will be most efleetive either when rocking backward or forward, in the former case the spring compressing and in the latter expanding, as will be readily understood. Furthermore, the lower attachingeyes 16 and 17 being located on the central line with respect to the expansion and contraction of the springs distortion of the latter is prevented and any tendency of the springs to creak is avoided.
The invention may be embodied in various forms, and in Fig. 3 I have shown one of the many possible modifications. In this construction the securing-eyes are omitted and in lieu thereof attaching-clips are employed. The horizontal arm 12 is provided with down wardly-bent portions 15, which run into the Y coils 10 and 11*, similar to the coils 10 and 11 in Fig. 1. The portion 12 is provided with a clip 21, inclosing the same and having apertures 22, through which securing bolts or screws may be passed to fasten the upperends of the springs to the rocker member A. The extremities are provided with inward extensions 23, which are fastened to the base member by clips 24. In order to more securely fasten the ends, they are preferably provided with the angular extensions 25, fitting in corresponding grooves in the clips 24.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. As an article of manufacture, a rockingchair spring made from a single strand of wire and comprising a pair of vertical laterally-spaced coils connected by a horizontal portion provided with an attaching-eye adjacent each coil, the extremities of the strand beyond the coils also being provided with attaching-eyes, and all the attaching-eyes being located in the same vertical plane and on corresponding sides of the coils.
