and particularly to machines of that character or type including among the elements of its structure a base upon which is mounted a 1 winding-drum constructed to be revolved by means of a sweep, said drum having arranged thereon a drag-cable, one end of which is connected to the stump being extracted, which rope is wound upon the drum, and thereby placed under tension during the revoluble movement of the drum.
The object of the invention is to provide a stump-puller which will be simple in construction, but of great durability and strength, and to provide in combination with the drum and the sweep a lifting device arranged and constructed to hoist the sweep out of engagement with the drum, which lifting device will include in its structure a simple and eiiicient means for securing the sweep in operative position on the drum during the operation of the machine.
The invention consists in the simplified structure of the stump-pulling machine in general and in mounting upon the base of the machine a support upon which is fulcrumed a lifting-lever, which is suitably connected to the sweep in order that said sweep may be raised out of or lowered into connection with the drum and providing the lever with means for locking the sweep in operative position on the drum.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, forining a part of this specification, and wherein-- Figure 1 is a detail perspective View of the base of the machine, showing' the sweep and drum removed therefromv and the support for the lifting device in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stump-pulling machine, showing the lifting and locking device manipulated to hold the sweep in operative Serial No- 175,987. (No modali) engagement with the drum. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fi g. 2, but showing the sweep lifted out of operative engagement with the drum. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail pcrspectivelview of the lifting device. Fig. 5 is a detail section through the crown-piece constituting the means for securing the lifting-lever to its support.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a frame constructed of timber or other suitable material upon which the stump-pulling machine is supported. This frame forms no part of my present invention and may be of any form to accomplish the purposes for which it is intended.
Proceeding to a description of the stumppulling machine proper, 2 designates the base portion, upon which are' arranged and secured the various working elements of the invention. This base portion has formed at oneof its ends a recessed portion 3, which is arranged to receive one of the members constituting the frame l, upon which the stumppulling machine is mounted. The base may be secured in position by any suitable means; but I have shown such means as consisting of bolts 4, as disclosed in the drawings. Upon its upper side and preferably adjacent one end the base has formed thereon an attaching-hook 4u, which is adapted to have secured thereto one end of an anchor-cable 5, substantially as shown in the drawings. At one of its end portions the base is provided with an integral verticallyextending spindle 6, which is] substantially cylindrical in form and constitutes an axle upon which is revolubly mounted a winding-drum 7, upon which is wound a drag-cable 7a, one end of which is secured to the stump upon which force is to be exerted. This drum is provided with upper and lower peripheral end flanges 8 9, the lower one of which is formed on its lower face with circumferentially-arranged ratchetteeth 10. Pivotally mounted upon a side of the base 2 is a weighted pawl 11, which is held normally in engagement with the ratchetteeth l() on the drum in order to'prevent back movement of the drum during the operation of pulling stumps.
The winding-drum 7 is provided upon its IOO upper end portion with vertical peripheral anges 12, which are formed integral with the drum and constitute standards or abutments between which the sweep 13 is arranged and seated when in its operative position toimpart a revoluble movement to the drum, which is accomplished by the engagement of the said sweep with the flanges 12 12. The sweep is provided with a vertical transverse opening 13, the purpose of which will be more fully set 'forth hereinafter.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the spindle 5 has formed therein a centrally-arranged seat or socket 14, in which is disposed and secured a vertical rod 15, which extends upward through the opening 18 in the sweep and forms considerable distance above the top portion of the drum and constitutes a support for the sweep lifting and holding device, to be described hereinafter. This rod vmay be secured in position by any suitable means; but I have shown such means as consisting of a bolt 15, let through the body of the spindle and extending into the socket 14 to engage the rod, whereby it is held against displacement and also rotation.
Upon the upper end of the supporting-rod 15 is revolubly mounted a collar or sleeve 16, constituting the means for securing the lifting-lever in position on the simporting-rod. This collar is loosely mounted on the said rod in order that it may have a rotary movement thereon and is held in place against removal by swaging the upper end of the supportingrod so as to spread over the upper edge of the collar, substantially as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
It will be seen from the 'above description that the swaging of the head of the rod provides a means for effectually preventing the removal of the collar, but will not prevent the collar from slipping down the rod. Therefore in order to prevent such slippingl form the upper end of the collar with a trans versely arranged crown piece 16", which bears upon the top of the rod and not only prevents downward movement of the collar, but constitutes a bearing for the lifting device in order to provide for its rotary movement when the sweep is operated to revolve the drum.
Projecting laterally from the side of the collar 16 is a pair of bearing ears or projections 17, formed with alining-apertures, in which is arranged the ends of a bearing-pin 18, substantially as shown. Fulcrumed upon the bearing-pin 18 and arranged between the said ears is one end of a lateral projection 19, formed on a hand or lifting lever 30, which is provided at its free end with a suitable hand-grasp. On the side of the lever opposite the projection 19 is provided a laterallyextending arm 21, formed to constitute a locking or holding cam. This cam is so arranged that when the lever is swung downwardly it will engage the upper side of the sweep to force and hold the same in positive engagement with the topof the drum. Pivotally secured on the lifting-lever at a point between and in line with the projection 19 and the arm 21 is a coupling-bail 22, which passes under the sweep and serves as the connection whereby the sweep is raised when the lifting-lever is swung upwardly and in which the sweep hangs when elevated.
The sweep having been arranged in operative position on the drum within the bail 22 and the rod 15 having been placed through the opening 13 and secured in position in its seat 14C, the operation of the invention is as follows: Vvrhen it is desired to lift the sweep out of engagement with the drum, and consequently throw the same out of gear, the hand or lifting lever 2O is thrown upwardly, which movement will elevate the bail 22 and the sweep. The continued upward movement of the lever will then carry the pivotal connection beyond the fulcrum of the lever, and the weight of the sweep will hold the said lever against return movement, whereby the sweep will be held in elevated position out of engagement with the drum, which may be rotated to unwind the drag-cable, the pawl having been thrown out of engagement with the ratchet-teeth. lVlien it is desired to place the sweep into-operative engagement with the drum, the lever 2O is thrown downwardly, whereby the bail and sweep are lowered into position on the drum. By exerting force in a downward direction on the lever the arm 21 will be forced into engagement with the upper surface of the sweep and past the pivotal point of the bail, whereby the sweep will be positively locked in position on the drum. 1t will be readily seen that when the sweep is swung around that the drum will be rotated, whereby the drag-cable will be wound thereon to exert a force to pull the stump from the ground.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a stump-pulling machine, the combi nation with a frame, a drum on the frame and a sweep eoacting with the drum, of a lifting device supported on the frame for raising and lowering the sweep said lifting device including a means to engage the sweep for locking the same in operative position on the drum.
2. In a stump-pulling machine, the combination with a drum, and a sweep, of a support, a lifting device carried by the support, for raising and lowering the sweep out of and into engagement with the drum, said lifting device including a cam to engage the sweep for locking the same in operative position on the drum.
3. In a stump-pulling machine, the combination with a drum and a sweep, of a support, a lifting-lever carried by the support and connectcd to the sweep, to raise and lower said IOO IIO
sweep with relation to the drum, said lever carrying a means to engage the sweep when the lever is,in one position for securing the same in engagement with the drum.
4L. In a stump-pulling machine, the combination with a drum and sweep, of a support, a lifting-lever fulcrumed on the support and connected to the sweep to raise and lower the sweep with relation to the drum, and a camface on the lever adapted to engage the sweep when in its lowered position to hold it in engagement with the drum.
5. In a stump-pulling machine the combination with a drum and a sweep cfa support, a lever fulcrumed on the support means connecting the sweep and the lever and an arm on the lever adapted to engage the sweep when in its operative position.
6. In a stump-pulling machine, the combination with a drum and a sweep, of a support, a collar rotatably mounted on the support, a lever fulcrumed on the collar, an arm on the lever adapted to engage the sweep when in its operative position and means carrying the sweep and connected to the lever between its fulcrum and the arm.
7. In a stump-pulling machine, the combination with a drum and a sweep, of a support, a collar rotatably mounted on the support, a lever provided with oppositely-arranged arms, one of which is pivoted to the collar, and means engaging the sweep and connected to the lever between the arms.
8. In a stump-pulling machine, the combination with a drum and a sweep, of a supporting-rod a collar rotatably mounted on the supporting-rod and secured thereon by swaging the said rod, a crown-piece on the collar eX- tending over and bearing on the swaged end of the rod, a lifting-lever provided with oppositely-arranged arms, one of which is pivoted to the collar, and means engaging the sweep and connected to the lever between the arms.
9. In a stump-pulling machine, the combination with a base provided with a spindle, of a drum on the drum on the spindle having upper and' lower end flanges, the upper iiange being provided with vertical peripheral flanges, and the lower one with circumferential ratchet-teeth, a weighted pawl on the base adapted to engage the ratchet-teeth, a sweep on the drum between the flanges and means for raising and lowering the sweep, said means including a means for holding the sweep in engagement with the drum.

In a stump-pulling machine, the combination with a drum and a sweep, of a support, a collar rotatably mounted on the support, means to hold the collar in position, a lever fulcrumed on the collar, means connecting the sweep and the lever, and a cam-face on the lever adapted to engage the sweep when in its lowered position to hold it in engagement with the drum.
