PLUNGER FOR BRICK-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 762,230, dated June '7, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS S. ORAPP and ROBERT O. FINcH, citizens of ,the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plungers for Brick-Machines, oi' which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in plungers for brick-machines, and is a division of an application for patent for a brick-machine tiled by us on the 16th day of June, 1903, Serial No. 161,164.
The object of the invention is to provide a plunger that will allow the clay to pass through it with as little resistance as possible, but only in the direction of the molds.
We accomplish the objects of the invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a horizontal section of the im proved plunger taken longitudinally of the machine; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section of same, and Fig. 3 a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
4 is the press-box, 5 the face-plate between the press-box and the molds, and 6 the molds in which the brick are formed.
7 is a journal-box, which is supported by the radial webs 8 atthe mouth of the pressboX. 9 is a hollow shaft which has a bearing in said journal-box. The ends of the said boX are capped with caps l() 10 and suitably packed to prevent the access of clay into the bearings. Passing through the hollow shaft 9 is the piston-rod 11, which terminates within the pressboX 4, and to it is secured the plunger 12. This plunger comprises the outer wall or shell 13, having inwardly-beveled edges, so as to present the minimum obstruction when the plunger is forced through the clay, and it has the transverse wall or diaphragm 14, through which are a plurality of openings for the clay to pass through in the movement of the latter toward the molds 6. The piston-rod 11 has an intermittent lOngitudinally-reciprocating movement, whereby the plunger is reciprocated. When the plunger is moved toward the molds in the operation of pressing the clay therein, the backward movement of the clay is prevented by the closures or valves 15, which are hinged at their upper ends to the diaphragm, as shown. The lower ends of these valves are made thin, so as to cause them to cut through the clay readily under pressure from the Outward movement of the plunger.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a press-box for brick-machines, a piston having a tubular periph ery with rigid beveled ends, a transverse diaphragm between said ends integral with said periphery, said diaphragm having transverse openings,and valveplates hinged at their upper ends so as to swing outwardly to allow the clay to pass, said plates being reduced in thickness toward their free ends to facilitate their passage through the clay.
