SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,148, dated J 11116 7, 1904.

To all whom t may concern:
provements in gates; and its object is to provide a device of this character which is held normally closed by gravity and which can be The invention consists of a gate adjustably mounted upon a suitable post or support provided therefor, one of the hinges of the gate being connected to an inclined adjustable rod. This rod is engaged by a lever connected with suitable operating devices provided therefor, whereby the rod can be moved to a desired inclination, so as to swing the gate by gravity in the proper direction.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved gate and the operating means provided therefor. Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the gate-post and the gate-operating lever. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of the cap of the post, and Fig. 4 is an elevation of the lower portion of the gate-post.
' Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a post, having a plate 2 secured to the lower end thereof in any suitable manner and provided with a series of pintles 3, arranged in vertical alinement, any one of which is adapted to engage an eye 4, extending from the lower portion of one end of a gate 5. A pin 6 extends from the post 1 at a point above pin tles 3, and loosely mounted thereon is a rod 7, which extends upward through a guidingbracket 8. This bracket projects forward from a cap 9, having iianges 1() upon its lower face, which form a socket 11 for`the reception of the upper end of the post. The bracket 8 is angular in form and is preferably integral with the cap 9. Studs 12 project upward from the cap adjacent opposite sides thereof and through curved slots 13, formed within a yoke 14.. An arm 15 extends from the central portion of the. yoke, while the slotted portions of said yoke are formed integral with the forked end 16 of another arm 17 A transverselyextending slot 18 is formed within the arm 17 for the reception of the rod 7, hereinbefore referred to, and a longitudinally-extending slot 19 is provided within arm 15 for the reception of a crank 20, formed at the upper end of a rod 21, revolubly mounted within brackets 22, secured to the rear face of the post 1. An arm 23 is provided at the lower end of this rod for the purpose hereinafter more fully described. A coiled spring 24 connects the outer end of arm 17 with the top of thegate 5.
A standard 25 is arranged adjacent post 1' and together with said post serves to support two oppositely-extending beams 26, each of' which has a pulley 27 connected thereto. Mounted on these pulleys are operating-ro pes 26, which are connected to opposite sides of the outer end of arm 15. A lever 29 is preferablypivoted to one of the beams 26 and is connected, by means of a rope 30, with arm 17. The ropes 28 are preferably provided at their free ends with handles 31, by means of which the same may be readily grasped by hand.
Arranged within the roadway at opposite sides of the gate 5 and at suitable distances removed therefrom are base-plates 32, having shafts 33 journaled thereon. A crank 34 is formed by each of these shafts, and oppositely-extending arms 35 and 36 are arranged at one end of the shaft, the last-mentioned arm,` 36, projecting into a hole 37 in the ground and being provided with a weight 38, which serves to hold the same normally in lowered position and retain the crank 34 normally projected upward from the ground. A pulley 39 is arranged at the inner end of each of the holes 37 and serves to support a cable 40, which is secured at opposite ends to the arms 3 6 and is fastened to the arm 23. Arms 35 are connected by a cable 41.
Vhen a wagon or other vehicle approaches the gate, the same can be guided so as to bring one or more of its wheels upon crank 34. The crank 34 will therefore be swung down- IOO ward by the wheels and will cause the cable to move in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1, and thereby swing the arm 23 and the crank 20. As this crank 2O engages arm 15 said arm will be swung laterally and the slotted yoke 14 caused to move on the studs 12. As rod7 is engaged by arm 17 it will be slid along one side of the bracket Sinto position adjacent one side of post l, and the gate 5 will thus be caused to swing by gravity away from the approaching vehicle, and this movement will be accelerated by spring 24, which is tensioned during the lateral movement of arm 17. The gate will return to its normal position by gravity after the crank 34 has been released. The gate will be operated in the same manner by a vehicle approaching in the opposite direction and, if desired, can be opened manually by pulling downward on the adjacent rope 28, which is connected to the arm 15. The lever 29 and rope 30 are employed for opening the gate toward the vehicle when desired. By arranging a series of pintles 3 the gate can be adjusted vertically, so as to form an opening of desired size thereunder.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but 1 do not limit myself thereto, as 1 am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing' from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve thc right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a post having a pintle secured thereto, an inclined rod loosely connected to the post, and a gate pivotally mounted upon the pintle and rod; of an vangular bracket extending from the post and supporting the rod, a yoke having curved slots and movably mounted upon the post, oppositely-extcnding arms integral with the yoke and one of them engaging' the rod, and means for moving the yoke and arms upon the post.
2. The combination with a post having an inclined rod loosely connected thereto, and a gate pivotally mounted upon the rod; of a cap upon the post, an angular bracket extending therefrom and supporting the rod, a
yoke having curved slots and mounted upon the cap, oppositely-extending arms projecting from the yoke and one of them loosely engaging the rod, and means for swinging the arms and yoke.
3. The combination with a post having an inclined rod loosely connected thereto, and a gate pivotally mounted l upon the rod; of a cap upon the post, an angular bracket thereon inclosing and supporting the rod, a yoke upon the cap and having curved slots, yokeengaging devices within the slots, oppositely extending arms projecting from the yoke and one of them loosely engaging the rod, and means for swinging the arms and yoke.
4. The combination with a post having an inclined rod-loosely connected thereto, and a gate pivotally mounted upon the rod; of a cap upon the post, an angular bracket thereon inclosing and supporting the rod, a yoke upon the cap and having' curved slots, yokeeugaging devices within the slots, oppositelyextending arms projecting from the yoke and one of them loosely engaging the rod, a spring connection between the gate and one of the arms, a crank connected to the post and engaging one of the arms, and means for automatically rotating the crank.
5. 1n a device of the character described, the combination with a post having a series of alining pintles thereon; an inclined rod loosely connected to the post, and a gate pivotallymounted upon one of the pintles and the rod; of a cap upon the post, an angular bracket thereon supporting the rod, a yoke upon the cap having curved slots therein, slotengaging devices upon the cap, oppositely-extending' arms projecting from the yokev and one of them engaging the rod, a spring connection between said arm and the gate, a rod revolubly mounted upon the post, a crank at one end thereof engaging the other arm, an arm extending from said rod, a crank-shaft, an arm thereon, and a flexible connection between said arm and the arm on the rod.
