To atl w/aom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SPIELMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Numbering-Machines, of which the following is a specification.-
This invention relates to that class of numbering, stamping, or marking machines in which the several wheels are independently movable step by step, and is shown applied to what is called a yardage-machine, employed to stamp upon a tag or card the number of yards contained in a ball or roll of cloth, ribbon,.&c.
In machines to which this invention relates the wheel-frame carrying the gang of wheelsV is reciprocated by means of a spring-controlled plunger in a main or supporting frame, and the ink-pad box is so constructed and arranged that on the depression of the wheel-frame to make an impression the ink-pad box is sw ung out of the way. In the present machine the wheels are independently changed by levers carrying pawls, and these levers each act directly on a rocking frame pivoted to the wheelframe and which in turn works directly against the ink-pad box to remove it'positively out of contact with the wheels when one or more of them is operated by its lever.

The ink-pad box e is, as usual, pivoted at each end, by means of projecting arms, to the sides of the main frame and is connected by links f with studs on the outer faces of the wheelframe, so that as the wheel-frame is depressed the ink-pad box is swung out oi' the path of the descending wheels. The sides of the wheelframe c project forward, as indicated at g, and
in the lower part of these side projections on a transverse pivot-rod /L are pivoted the several levers z', for which the transverse rod j forms the back-stop. Each such lever carries a pawl le, that engages the ratchet of the corresponding wheel, and by manipulation of the levers the wheels .may be independently changed or rotated step by step, as may be desired by the operator. Extending across the rear faces of this series of levers is the crossbar m of a rocking frame, the side pieces n of which are pivoted on the pivot-rod L. Rockershaped extensions 0 of these side pieces bear on the edges of the ink-pad box at its ends, and each side-piece end has a lug p, to which is attached a springp, passing around the lug to which the link f is pivoted and then around a stud q on the side oi' the wheel-frame. Vhen a lever a' is depressed to' advance its wheel, as seen in Fig. 2, the rocker parts 0 of the rocking frame actfdirectlyon the inkpad box and move it out of contact with the faces of the wheels. The spring p serves to return the rocking frame m n and all other parts to the normal position indicated in Fig. 1. rIhe pawls 7c are mounted in their respective levers and spring-controlled in the manner shown in Fig. 4. The side oi' the lever is cut out or formed with a recess r of appropriate depth and dimensions, in one end of which is pivoted the pawl 75, which is formed with a projecting toeor lug s, against which bears a spring t, turned around a post a and having its end then laid in an open channel cut in the face of the lever. The post a may be part of the stock of the lever left by milling a circular cavity around it, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the main or supporting frame, a wheel-frame therein, wheels carried by this frame, a plurality of separatelymovable wheel-engaging levers, a swinging ink-pad box, and a rocking frame pivoted to the wheel-frame movable independently of the wheel-changing levers but acted on by the levers and having a projection bearing directly on the ink-pad box for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the main or supporting frame, a Wheel-frame therein, Wheels carried by the Wheel-frame, a plurality of separately-moving Wheel-changing levers, a swinging ink-pad box, and a rocking frame pivoted on the Wheel-frame movable independently of the wheel-changing levers but acted on by the levers and having curved or rocker-shaped projections bearing directly on the ink-pad box for the purpose specified.
3. The wheel-changing-lever formedV with a recess in its side and with a post at one end formed by milling out the metal around it and having also a channel in the face of the lever communicating With the cavity around the post, combined with a pawl pivotcd in the recess in the face of the lever and formed. with a toe or projection and a spring turned around the post with one end held in said channel and the other end bearing against the toc of the pavvl.
4. The Wheel-changing lever herein described, formed with a recess in its side and having a post at one end having a recess surrounding it, and having also a channel in the face of the lever communicating with the recess around the post combined With a pawl pivoted in the recess in the face of the lever and formed with a toe or projection, and a spring turned around the post With one end held in said channel, and the other end bearing against the toe of the paWl.
