Be it known that we, MAX RUMrr and lWILLIAM E. NIMZ, citizens of the United States, residing -at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful lmprovementsin Self-hiking Stamps, of which the following is av specification, reference being had; to the accompanying' drawings, forming a part thereof.
The purpose of this invention is toprovide an improved self-inking stamp, adapted for hand operation and for carrying a multiplicity ofdetachable and interchangeahle stamps, and without regard to the multiplicity of stamps or means for carrying such multiplicity, to provide an improved mechanism for inking. the stamp in the initial portion of its descentand withdrawing the inking pad out of the path of descent without widening or dragging motion upon the stamp. lt consists in the elements and features of construction shown and described as indicatedin the claims. The stamp carrier, 6, is a rotor upon the shaft, 5, for rotation thereabout, said rotor having a multiplicity of paraXial seats or faces adapted each for carrying a stamp, so that when the stamps are thus mounted upon the rotor, the rotor has a multiplicity of paraxial vprinting faces. The means hereinafter described serve to lock the rotor with any selected printing face, or seat for-fainting the stamp, at the lower side,-that is, positioned to be advanced or pressed downward by the plunger tor printing. ln this operation, the mecha` nism thus far described operates for inking the stamp, withdrawing the inking pad from the stamp and clearing the path of the stamp for printing, unaffected by the fact that the stamp carrier has a multiplicity of ltaces; that is, this mechanism operates precisely las if it were but a single printing face of the part thus mounted At the initial position or position of rest, `the plunger is upheld bythe spring, 3, upholding the stamp carrier; the ink pad carrier is upheld by the spring, 10, operating through the links, 8, being stopped and limited as toits upward position by the studs, 7d, reaching the upper ends of the slots, 9, in the stop blocks. 9. In this downward movement of the ink pad carrier, the engagement of its side arms with the links, 8, by means of a stud, 8b, and 7f, in the notches and slots, 7e and 8e, respectively, causes the links, 8, to be swung downward. and outward while said studs travel in said notches and slots, respectively; the studs, 7d, having reached the rearward outlet, 9b, from the slots, 9, further depres-v sion of the plunger causes the links, 8, to control the movement of the ink pad carrier bythe engagement of the studs, 8b and 7i, in the notches, 7e and slots, 8e, respectively, and swing the ink pad carrier rearwardly. The links, 8, have at their inner or forward ends, cam projections, 8g, facing upwa dly, an d the lower ends of the plunger side arms, 2, have coperatingprojections, 2g, which encounter said cam projections, 8g, at the same point in the action at which the studs, 7d, reach the rear outlet, 9b, from the slot, 9`-; and in the rearward swingwhich the links, 8, are calculated to give tothe ink pad carrier as above described, the cam projections, Sg, and 25', coperating to force the forward ends of the links, 8, and thereby to force the ink pad carrier downward while it is swinging rearward, thus causing it to withdraw obliquely downward and rearward from the face or' the stamp, avoiding the dragging `or wiping of the ink pad upon the stamp. Continuation of the downward thrust of the plunger carries the ink pad carrier entirely clear of the path oit the stamp, as seen in Fig. 6, while the stamp descends to a position for printing, as seen in that figure. Upon the operators release or". the plunger, the spring, 3, returns the parts to their original position, reversing all the movements above described in the reverse of the order described. Y

6. .ln itself-inning stamp, in combination with a supporting frame, a plunger mounted for reciprocation on the frame ;I a stamp carrier carried byftheplunger; an ink pad carrierpivotally carried by theplunger having Vtiallykof the y,rotor correspondingly to the lost motion connected therewith;v an ink-` pad-controlling link pivoted on the frame at aline offset laterally from the path of reciprocation oit the pivotal connection of the-ink pad carrier with the plunger, and trending operating abutments on the swinging movement downwardly from its said pivot, and having lost motion connection with the ink pad carrier at its lower end; a spring acting on the link'to cause it to uphold thel ink pad carrier, a guide-way on the frame for the ink pad carrier, the latter having an abutment which engages said guideway in the initial part of the descent of the plunger, the guideway having a lateral opening for the escape of the abutment therefrom at the limit of the lost motion connection of the link to thek ink pad carrier, whereby beyond saidlimit in the descending movement of the plunger, the link; controls the ink pad carrier by swinging it laterally about its fn'lcrum or pivotal connection with the plunger, and coplunger and ink pad carrier which coperate cam-wise for relatively depressing the ini pad carrier with respect to the plunger `in the lateral y of the ink pad carrier.

In a self-inking pad, in combination with a frame, a plunger mounted for reciprocation in the frame, astamp carrier carried by the plunger, an ink pad carrier suspended from the plunger and having lost motion connection therewith permitting relative vertical movement with respect to the plunger; 'a spring-operated link pivoted to the frame at a line offset laterally from the path of reciprocation of the pivotal connection of the ink pad carrier with the plunger, and trending downwardly from its said pivot, and engaged with the said ink pad carrier for yieldingly upholding the latter, coperating stops on the frameand the ink pad carrier to limit the uplift of the ink pad carrier by said links, said coperating stops being adapted also for guiding the ink pad carrier to limit it to a--vertical path to a limited distance of descent4 from the position at which it is stopped by said cooperating stops, the link having lost motion connection with the ink pad carrier for limited movement of the carrier-connected end of the link laterally with respect to the plungers movement, the several engagements being proportioned for terminating the lost motion between the link and the ink pad carrier, at the same time that the engagement against lateral movement of the ink pad carrier terminates.

In the structure defined in claim 7 foregoing, coperating abutments on the plunger and link for causing the link to be ,depressed at its end which is engaged with the ink pad carrier, and to depress the ink pad carrier, relatively to the plunger in the movement of said end of the link laterally with respect ,to the plungers movement.
9, In a self-inking stamp, with a plunger, a'rotor for carrying a multiplicity of stamps, comprising shaft journaledon the plunger; similar polygonal heads rigid with the shaft` said heads hav-i ing notches between the'consecutive sides of their polygonal outline, the two sides of each notch being'` inwardly divergent, each side of the polygonal outline is the end of a dove-tail projection, and tie plates connecting the two heads formed for seating on said sides of the polygonal outline, and having anges which engage the dove-tail projection. n

In `aself-inking stamp, in combination with a plunger, a rotor for carrying a multiplicity of stamps, comprising a shaft journaled on the plunger and two similar heads rigid with `the shaft, said heads having similar polygonal outline with notches between the consecutive sides of said outin combinationce Y whereby y line, the opposite sides of each 4notch being from the respective sides of their polygonal outline, the ends of said lugs of the tie plate being bent into engagement withsaid apertures for securing the tie plates in position. 11. In a self-inIing stamp,=in` combination with a rotatable stamp shell consisting of end heads and longitudinally peripherally 'situated connectors, a stamping device comprising a plurality of rotatable imprinting members; an-axle on which they are mounted for rotation, said axle being mounted lin the end heads, said imprinting members having laterally posipositioned inwardly i carrier comprising a tioned polygonal shoulders of less radius i than the printing periphery of said members;
