Be it known that -I, MAYER- SLo'rKIN, a citizen of the United States, residingin New York,
borough of Manhattan, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Power Mechanism for Forges, of which the following is a specification.
The fans in the smaller forges used by metal-Workers were heretofore driven by hand-operated motion-transmitting mechanism. This left only one hand free for holding the article to be heated, which was in many cases inconvenient. 1
The object of this invention is to furnish a foot-power mechanism for such forges in which the fan is driven by the foot, so that both hands are free for holdingand manipulating the article in the forge; and for this purpose the invention consists of certain novel features and combinations of parts, which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a forge with my improved foot-power mechanism shown as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the"supporting stand of the forge, showing the supporting-bar forthefoot power mechanism. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the supporting-bar of the foot-power mechanism shown as detached from the stand; and Fig. 4: is a vertical transverse section on line 4 L, Fig. 3, showing the arrangement of the supporting-arms for the fiy-wheel shaft and showing the bearing for the lever-fulcrum. ' Referring to the drawings, A represents the stand of an ordinary hand-forge used by machinists and others for forging metallic articles. The stand A is usually composed of four upright legs a, which are applied at their upper ends to socketsb of the bowl B of the forge and connected at their lower ends by means of a ring that is attached by rivets to the legs a, as shown clearly in the drawings.
My improved foot-power mechanism that is employed for driving the forge by which the necessary draft is given to the fuel in the bowl B is supported on a horizontal bar C, which is provided with end sleeves (Z, which are-slipped over the two left-hand legs a of the stand, as shown in Fig. 2. The horizontal bar 0 is provided near the front sleeve with a bearing a for the fulcrum of the foot-lever L, said foot-lever being provided at the lower end with a foot rest or treadle t and at its curved upper end with a toothed segment I), which is riveted at its ends equidistantly from the fulcrum to the upper part of the foot-lever L. the toothed segment D meshing with a pinion a on the casing of a power-transmitting clutch E. -.This clutch may be of any approved pattern, but preferably consists of a power-imparting member, a power-receiving m'emberE, having a circumferential flange, a carrying-plate G, a sliding grip it, guided on the carrying-plate, a spring-controlled operating-lever P, pivotally mounted on' the sliding grip it, the lever being connected with the power-imparting member for actuating the sliding grip to frictionally' engage a stop provided on the carrying-plate to prevent the body of the lever from contact with the edge of :the flange of the power-receiving member,

The clutch is arranged on the shaft f of the fly-wheel F, which shaft is supported in bearings f at the lower ends of brackets f that are made integral with the horizontalbar C, as shown in Fig. 2. The fulcrum of the footlever must be arranged in such relative position to the fly-wheel shaft that by the oscillating motion of the foot-lever and toothed segment and the operation of the clutch by an intermeshing pinion on the casing of the same a continuous rotary motion in one direction is imparted to the fly-wheel, .and thereby rotation in one and the same direction to the fan by which air under pressure is supplied to the fuel in the bowl of the forge. The flywheel is preferably grooved and connected by a cord or belt With a pulley on the shaft of the air-fan of the forge, as shown in Fig. 1.
By the foot-power mechanism arranged on the stand of the forge the air-supplying fan is driven by foot-power, so that both hands are free to handle the article to be forged, The foot-power can be readily applied to the stand of the forge.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, With the bowl-supporting stand of aforge, of a horizontal bar attached to adjacent legs of the stand, said bar being provided With brackets extending from each side thereof and having journal-bearings at their lower ends, an oscillating lever fulcrumed to said horizontal bar and provided with a footrest at, its lower end, an internally-toothml
