CENTER VALVE FOR G ASPURIFIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0.'7e1,993, dated June 7, 1904;v
Application iiled April 1, 1904. Serial No. 201,166. (No model.)
T0 @ZL Loh/om t may concern:
Be it known that we, lWILLIAM SELLERS PICKERING, a resident of 4 School road, St. Thomas, Exeter, and HARRY GROVE, a resident of Ivydene, Pinhoe road, Exeter, in the county of Devon, England, Acitizens of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Center Valves for Gas-Purifiers, of which the following is a specification.
lThis invention relates to a valve for gaspuriiers, and particularly to a valve for gaspuriiiers on the ground, which valve is capable of vbeing mounted on the side of the purifier-casing and is capable of use in units for any number of puriiier-compartments.
According to the invention a valve-casing c is provided inwhich the respective partsare to be put together in units, each unit consisting of an upstanding pipe and a hood and a transverse passage above the pipe and hood and. partitions between each unit, so as thus to form a chamber between the upstanding pipe and the partitions within which Water or other liquid may be admitted and within which a hydraulic seal may be formed by the hood on the liquid rising above the lower' edge thereof. i
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1, 2, and 3 are respectively sectiona elevation, sectional plan, and sectional side elevation, of a valve applicable for two puriiiers on the ground, which valve is. attached to the side of the purifier-casing.
In carrying theinvention into effectv the main inlet-pipe is connected to the respective inlet-compartments e e', the connectingp'ipe being in continuation of the upstanding pipes e2 c2, respectively, while the main outletconduit c is connected to the respective outylet-compartments d cZ, the connecting-pipe being in continuation of the upstanding pipes Z2 cl2, respectively.- y
Each unit of thevalve-casing is formed of a base part u, a top part lv, a transverse partition w and intermediate vertical partitions t, and terminal covers fr m.
The lower part u of thecasing forms the.-
bottom of each compartment and is provided lwith a vertiiical iiange a', by means of which the valve-casing is secured to the purifier-casing and similarly a horizontal flange u2 at its upper part receiving a similar iiange @2, provided upon the upper parte of the valve-casing, which latter is also provided at its opposite side with a vertical flange o, by means of which it is secured to the puriiier-casing. The horizontal partitions w are connected to the respectivevertical partitions, as well as to the side of the purifier-casing, as illustrated.
The inlets and outlets to and from the compartments of the purifier are advantageously` situated immediately beneath the horizontal partition aforesaid, from lwhich depend the hoods f, which surround the inlet and outlet pipes c2 and cl2, respectively.
Each partition t is-provided with a slot t2 toward its upper part corresponding to the space formed between the to'p of the valvecasing and the horizontal partition aforesaid, so that thus the top of the valve-casing and the horizontal partition forms a conduit r, through` which the gas may How from one end of the valve-casing to the other.
The two middle compartments-a'. e., inletcompartment e' andthe outlet-'compartment communicate through an, aperture z5, formed at the lower end of the central vertical partition t, these respective compartments being completed by vertical partitions a' on each side of the central partition t, while the terminal inlet-chamber at one end and the terminal outlet-chamber at the other end communicate by the conduit 7' before referred to.
An additional water seal is providedat the terminal outlet-chamber by the provision of the partition a3, 'which is secured by its upper and lateral flanges to the side of the valvecasing andvpuriiier-casing, respectively, and to the end ofthe horizontal partition before referred to. v r
It will be understood that when neither of the compartments of the purifier are tol be cut out the unpuriiied gas passing through the first 'upstanding pipe @2 to the right-would enter the first purifier-compartment through the slot c3 and after passing through the compartment return into the neXt outlet-compart- IOO ment through the slot (Z3. The outletcompartment CZ is sealed, and the gases will thus be compelled to pass through the slot t at the lower end of the vertical partition t, which divides the outlet-compartment ,Z from the inlet-compartment e', thence passing into the second inlet-compartment al through the slot e3 into the second compartment of the puriiier, whence the gas returns again through the slot Z3 into the neXt outlet-compartment d. The second inletcompartment e will be flooded, while the second outlet-compartment d' Will be free of water; but the end compartment controlling the conduit 1' will be Hooded, so that thus the gas is compelled to pass through the second outlet-pipe into the outlet-main. In the same way it will be understood that the one or other, or both, compartments of the puriiier may be cut out from the circuit of the gases as may be required in working, whereby the purifying material may be renewed.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf
l. In a valve Jr'or gas-puriliers a plurality or' pairs of inlet and outlet chambers having passages near their upper ends for coinnninieating wlth a gas-purilier, an inlet-pipe extendlng upwardly into each1nlet-cmnpartnient, an
outlet-pipe leading away from each outlet- K compartment and liquid-seal passages placing the inlet and outlet chamber of each pai 1' in communication, substantially as described.
2. In a valve for gas-puriiiers, a plurality el:
pairs of inlet and outlet chambers having pas-
