PICKERING, a resident of l School road, St.
Thomas, Exeter, and HARRY GROVE, a resident of Ivydene, Pmhoe road, Exeter, inthe county of Devon, England, citizens of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Center Valves for Gas-Puriiiers', ofwhich the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to center valves for gas-puriiiers, and particularly to the fcPickering valve, which is the subject-matter of the prior British patent, No. 7 ,087 March 22, 1902, and has for its object while providing a valve of simple construction for direct attachment to the purifier-casing and while o'bviating the employment of independent connections therewith to provide a valve in which separate controlling-valves for the inlet and outlet of each of the compartments of the puriiier are dispensed with and in which the course of the gases is altered as required by hydraulic means. l
According to the invention the inlet and outlet chambers pertaining to the respective compartments oi' the purifier are provided with a partition which divides therespective chambers into two compartments, -one of which is open to the main inlet-chamber ory the main outlet-chamber, as the case may be, while the other 1s open to a connecting chamber or hood byrneans of which communication is made between the outlet of one puriliercompartment and the inlet of the next in the series, which connecting chamber or hood ,is also provided according' to the invention with a vertical partition. The partitions in the respective inlet land outlet chambersand in the connecting hoods or chambers extend short ot the full height of the chambers, so that thus a communicating aperture is provided at the lower part thereof. Means are provided for the admission of a quantity ofwater or other liquid to fill the lower part of the inlet and outlet chambers or to fill the lower part ot' the connecting hoods or chambers when it is respectively desired to cut off communication between the inlet and outlet chamber of the .respectivo compartments and the main inlet and main outlet chambers and when it is desired to cut off communication'between the outlet pertaining to one purilier-compartment and the inlet ofthe next. The admission and discharge of water or other liquid from the inlet, outlet, and connecting chambers may be effected by any suitable andconvenient means, and any ordinary self-acting valves may be provided for limiting the amount of .water supplied to the respective chambers, or self-acting overfiow devices or siphons may be provided for the same object.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures l and 2 are sectional plan and sectional elevation on the line c Fig. `1, respectively, oi one form of center valve provided according to the invention.k Fig. 2 ising the main inlet-chamber t, while a diagonal tubular casing c is provided within the main casing to serve as the main outlet-chamber. Combined inlet-chambers c e' e2 e3 and Voutlet-chambers CZ d' dipfA are provided upon each of the vfourv sides of the main casing a, which chambers respectively ,communicate with the main inlet-chamber o and main outlet-chamber c by apertures y, provided toward the top of the vertical walls of the main inletchamber It will be understood that the valve is placed below the purifying-chamber and that the combined inlet and outlet cham-l bers communicate with the compartments of said purli'yIng-chamber 1n the mannenindlcated in Fig. 2a. In this figure A A designate the partition-walls of the puriier, and it willv be seen that inlet-chamber @and outlet-chamber Z3 both communicate with one of the purifying-chambers through the ports indicated at @X and dx, and so on. Each inlet and outlet chamber, such as e and (Z, is provided with a vertical partition which stops short of running the full height of the chamber, so as thus to provide a suiiieient space toward the bottom of the chambers for communication between the respective sides of the partition. The associated inlet and outlet chambers on each side are connected together by a connecting chamber or hood j, within which a vertical partition 7" is also provided, which falls short of the full height of the chamber and provides a space toward the bottom for communication between each compartment of the connecting hood or chamber. Communication is made between the respective inlet and outlet chambers and their respective hoods or chambers by apertures w, provided toward the top of the walls which separate them. It will thus be understood that on water being supplied to the associated inlet and outlet chambers the water rises above the lower edge ofthe dividing-partition m, so that thus communication with the main inlet and main outlet chambers, respectively, is cut oli, and the gases passing into one outlet-chamber thus pass through to the corresponding connecting hood or chamberj and under the dividing-partition j thereofl into the inlet-chamber or the next purifier compartment in the series. /Vhen it is desired to cut out one of the purilier-compartments, it is only necessary to liood two connecting-hoods, together with the inlet and outlet chambers ot' the compartment to be cut out, and discharge the inlet-chamber of the compartment to be worked -iirst andv the outlet-chamber of the one last worked, so that thus the purilied gas instead of passing through the compartment comes direct into the main outlet-chamber and unpurilied gas passes from the main inlet-chamber to the inlet-chamber of the next compartment ot' the Series.
The invention is not conti ned to any particular arrangement of the respective inlet and outlet chambers or o'l' the connecting hoods or chambers.
According to a modification as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4t, the connecting chamber or hood j' may be arranged between its respective inlet and outlet chambers, such as e2 and (Z, and may be provided with a partitionjl at right angles to the partition in the said inlet and outlet chambers instead of arranging the connecting chamber or hood j' on the side of the said inlet and outlet chambers and instead of providing the dividing-partition in line or parallel with the wall dividing the inlet and outlet chambers, as in the modification hel-einbefore described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2.
A center valve, as hereinbefore described, may be provided in connection with a controlling tap-cock, by means of which water or otherliquid may be supplied to and discharged from the respective inlet and outlet chambers and supplied to and discharged from the connecting-chambers bythe operation of one operating-handle. The construction ol such a. controlling tap-cock and the ovcrliow devices may be such as is very well known.
The inventionis notlimited to the provision of partitions in the manner hercinbelore de,- scribed, as the means of sealing the respective compartments oi' the inlet, outlet, and connecting chambers may be modified substantially to meet the requirements ot' dill'erent forms of purilier, and similarly the arrangement of the said chambers may be modilied without departing from the invention as broadly delined.

Ahydraulic center valve 'for gas-puri liers comprising main inlet and outlet chambers, a plurality of combined inlet and outlet chambers having communication with the main inlet and outlet chambers respectively and communicating also with the compartments ol the purilier, and partitions in said combined inlet and outlet chambers having ports at the bottom whereby by flooding any ol'I said chambers the ports thereof may be closed, substantially as described.
2. In a hydraulic center valve Vfor gas-purifiers the combination with a plurality ol purifying-chambers, of a main inlet and a main outlet chamber, a series ot' pairs ol subordinate inlet and outlet chambers, comm unicating respectively with main inlet and outlet passages, passages placing each purifyingcompartment in communication with the inletpassage of one pair and the outlet-passage ol' the succeeding pair, partitions in said pairs o1' inlet and outlet passages subdividing them into chambers communicating at the lower part which communication may be closed with liquid and passages connecting the inlet and outlet chambers ol each pair, substantially as described.
